Are we seriously talking about this?

STREET FIGHTER 1 !! beats any mortal kombat game to come out.

Street fighter 2 and on ...its just a beat down like no other. Street fighter is the reason fighting games are what they are today.

No street fighter = no mortal kombat.

Street Fighter hands down. Street Fighter 2 was amazing and it's pretty much gotten better over the years. 3rd strike is THE best 2d fighter out there PERIOD.

Without Street Fighter there would be no fighting game genre. SF started it all; SF2:WW is the mother of all fighting games, except DoA that was an adopted freakshow. Nothing beats SF back in the days, Super Turbo is still being played competively with tournaments today. MK went from good to horrible, the fighting system is horrible and 99% of the hardcore fighting game community detest it. SF just got better and better as time went on, for example the latest chapter of the SF story, SF3:3rd Strike came out in '99 and still the most popular fighting game today.

I'm sorry, I have to go against the grain here, and agree with the original poster.

I enjoyed Mortal Kombat much more when it first came out, than I did SF2. Not taking anything away from SF2, but MK was much more entertaining for me and my brother.

Mortal Kombat's un-necessarily excessive blood and gore, choppy motion-captured graphics, and bad framework seemed way too immature compared to Street Fighter II in my opinion. But then again, it was that same excessive blood and gore that made it popular in the first place. I say if you wanted more of a good, technical fight, you probably will side with Street Fighter. However, if you liked to beat the computer by simply repeating the same back + low kick sweep move repeatedly, then do bloody fatalities to show off to your friends, Mortal Kombat is the mother of all old-school fighters for you.

Mortal Kombat defenitly. SF had to many Ryu clones not to mention the fight used to get boring quickly. MK however had alont of things to do, like fatalities and stuff.

Number of Shoto clones:
Ryu, Ken, Akuma, and Sean
You can put in Sakura, but she's nothing like the others.

Number of Ninja clones:
Sub-Zero, Sub-Zero (no mask), Scorpion, Noob Saibot, Smoke, Reptile (before freakshow), Ermac, and Rain.
Am I missing anything?

Well just to make sure someone is gonna give me the "you n00b those ninjas have changed throughout the ages", so have the Shotos.

MK was very stale and relied on it's graphics and "cool" looking fatalities to prosper. There was no depth or much of a strategy to it, which is why MK is not even being played competetively, I have never heard of a huge major tournament having MK in it's list of games, ever. Both SF game ST and 3s in the other hand still has flourishing competetive play with a bagillion tournaments, especially 3s.

Yes but you forget one thing, those ninja's had different moves then each other, their only similarity was their dresses and even that changed with time (sub and scorpy wear diffrent style cloths now). Where the sho's all used hadokens and shoryukens. I am not saying it was bad just that compared to MK the fight became dull after you faced 3 shotoka-s in your tourny...

Definitely Mortal Kombat, fatalities, babalities, etc.. all make the MK games more appealing. And another great part of the series is the story.

Forgot about Dan, but I think that should be it.

Well...about the other post, saying things about all of the ninjas being different. Sure, Ken, Ryu, and Akuma shares 3 distinct moves the Hadouken, Shoryuken, and Tatsumaki. Back then it was hard to have a distinct difference between them, but now things have changed, now in 3rd Strike.

Ryu:
Hadouken: Safe and heavily relies on using the EX version of it for knockdown.
Shoryuken: 1 hit, comes out slower than the other 2 Shotos and has less range.
Tatsumaki: Travels far, fast, good stun, and has knockdown. Always good to land.

Ken:
Hadouken: Crappiest out of the 3, slow startup and horrible recovery time, another Ken player can super you even if they get hit at point blank.
Shoryuken: Best out of the 3, starts up fast, and has a lot of invincibility on startup. Multiple hits depending on strength of punch, and can combo into itself if within range or if you have sexy Kara-Shoryuken skills.
Tatsumaki: Horrible even when it hits. Ken is at a disadvantage right when he lands, once again another Ken can super even if he gets hit.

Akuma:
Hadouken: Safe, can be used in the air in which the other 3 can't, and has a 3 hit Red Fireball.
Shoryuken: Multiple hits, juggles, and has good priority and invincibility
Tatsumaki: Flies low so it sets up juggles and does hefty damage with knockdown

Things have changed, they have all became different characters. Ryu and Akuma still shares some normals but Ken dropped most of that and has different kicks. Sean, Dan, and Sakura plays nothing like a Shoto...well maybe Sean but the only thing he shares is standard Shoto mixups. Too bad though, you think that it's dull that there would be a lot of Shotos, cause people nowadays cheer when you pick Akuma or Ryu in a tournament...too many Ken players. I find it funny that you call SF tournaments dull when MK has no tournaments at all...better than nothing...

I would say streetfighter is the better of the two. If it weren't for that franchise we wouldn't have Mortal Kombat or any of the other cool fighting series. Take away the origin, and we wouldn't even be able to have this argument and that's how important SF is to the gaming industry in terms of fighting-genre games. Mortal Kombat did push the envelope in terms of graphical content, and the controversy did lead to more games that tried pushing the boundary even further. But if I were to look back and see which game held my captivation in the arcade and home consoles for a loger period of time, I would have to say Streetfighter.

Street Fighter has some of the best characters to date. It sparked an Anime and a few Movies. It has the most well rounded fighters in any fighting game, atleast SF: 3rd Strike does.

Thats about as different as the different civs in Age of Empires while MK ninjas are like the different races of Starcraft.

The only character I thought was out of the ordinary was Zangeif for his grapples and those were hard to pull off.

Not only did MK have fatalities, they had knocking the opponent into the background, not to mention I believe Shang Tsung was the first person to be able to become anyone, spawning clones in games like Tekken and Soul Calibur. Plus, the moves had strategic value.

Streetfighter, you had fireball, ball of fire, close ranged multiple hit(chunli/Ehonda), and maybe a throw. Everything was solely about doing damage. Mortal Kombat, the moves involved Teleporting(raiden and Scorpion), groan causing nut cracking(johnny cage), freezing, spearing, invisibility, and moves that had tactical purposes other than causing direct damage.

Plus, people in SF were basically from around the world, MK had people from different dimensions and even nonhumans and gods.

^Lol, I'm not gonna argue, cause I got like a lot of stuff to say about the whole SF thing about not having strategy.

I guess MK appealled to those who were more into the whole graphics things, and the whole fatality stuff. While SF was more for the hardcore players who wants a real fighter with deep gameplay. I've been playing 3s competively for a year now, and I'm no where close to being a "good" player. When I say competively I mean, learning about my matchups, advanced tactics, combos, have keen reaction, execution, and mixups. Please don't give me the crap about MK being more deep than SF, because someone can sit down and play MK for a couple of months or maybe even a year and he's pretty much set to compete against "top" players. Put a guy down and make him play SF for a month or a year and he will be no where near top or average.

Things have changed since SF2 now, fireballs are nothing in 3s. So you don't have to scream about O.Sagat, Ryu, and Guile throwing fireballs all day to lock you down, now you can scream about Yun when he activates Genei-Jin, or when Makoto use Karakusa picks you up chokes you and proceed to bs stun combos. Oh yea, and also when someone picks Chun-Li...:S .

If those who are interested PM me, and I'll show you the magic of high level 3rd Strike play.

I owned both of them for SNES back in the day...played my friends all the time. However, if I were to choose between the two of them, I would probably go with Mortal Kombat...the fatalities take it...nothing better than beating your opponent to a pulp and then having the fatality(like sub zero ripping out your spine) to get the last bit of satisfaction. If street fighter had that...I would have voted for it.

:blink ...so Street Fighter's slow paced...then what does that make Mortal Kombat? I mean good lord...the game was so amazingly dull that I would turn it off after a few rounds just because I thought I'd have more fun watching fish fight. The look of the game just gave it a much slower feel...MK is WAAAAAY slower than Street Fighter ever was in my opinion. Alpha 2 freakin' rocks. Guy is the coolest character ever.

SF fo sheezy. Story was awesome, graphics and fluidity was better. SF even got the better replay value. Seriously my whole family and friends and thier family would much rather compete on SF. SF you can do alot more tricks and combos and such, not to mention more stylish.

I wonder why no one's mentioned SF alpha. That was a pimpin' game too. 3rd strike was pimp too. I also enjoyed puzzle fighter^_^

Street Fighter's always been the best imo. I didn't even like MK much. I will say that Sub Zero's MK1 fatality will remain as my favorite fatality of all time. It was sooo...unexpected :amuse.

It really depends, MK was fun just to do fatalities and to pass away the time on a boring sunday, but if your looking for in-depth fighting and competitve play then I am going to have to side with Street Fighter, while I did enjoy MK I like a lot of street fighter but I do hold KOF over Street Fighter. I think what we really need is simply another Capcom Vs Snk, I enjoyed that game to hell and am still playing it now against plenty of people.

I mean they had Rugal..man fuckin Rugal.

( Goes off to make another topic....)

Duy Nguyen

^Hahahahah, keep dreaming man. Capcom's contract with SNK ended after two games. SNK in the other hand still has license to use Capcom's characters in another game. They wasted away their first efforst in making SvC:Chaos. That game has got to be the more horrible game I've ever played.

If Capcom does somehow make another CvS, I really hope they would make more of a balance in the groove system and characters. I really want to see some strong SNK characters stand a chance if they make CvS3. I mean Geese, Kyo, Iori, Rock, and Hibiki ain't gonna cut it. For those of you who don't know, C and A-Groove dominates over all of the grooves. As for the characters, I'll just point out a few that will always show up in tournaments due to top tier status...Sagat, Blanka, Cammy, A-Sakura, and A-M.Bison.

I'd have to say MK had more in it. I've not played much of the post-SNES SF games, but MK's always wowed me with its story (which keeps getting more complex) and character interaction. I liked both, though.

Also, MK made a great live-action movie and SF made a terrible one.

And, as a by-the-by, the style Ryu and Ken use isn't actually Shotokan. It was renamed that for the English version for some bizarre reason. Possibly because Shotokan's the most popular style of karate, and hey! Ryu's wearing a karate suit! It's perfectly logical!
It's a hand-to-hand combat style based on karate, plus Qigong, which is based on control of your breathing and inner power.
Gouki (Akuma) uses a style called Kitsui no Hadou, which means a surge of killing intent.
Sakura's style is self-taught, an imitation of Ryu's, and Sean's style is a copy of Ken's.

i picked street fighter

why

because in the end street fighter did have the better graphics
even though mortal combat had fot that time of the hook graphics cus they used pictures or something

mortal kombat war really cool becuase it had blood and fatalities
those were really sick

but looking back now i have to say mortal kombat was a crappy game and street fighter was just simpy better

Street fighter of course! I'm the biggest street fight fan ever.

Street fighter II, Street fighter Turbo II and Super Street fighter II are classics. I used to have them on super NES. Some of you will say I'm lying but I'm actually good with every character, and when I say good I mean unbeatable. My fav characters were Ken, Ryu and Bison.

On ps1, I got Street fighter Alpha III and met Akuma (Gouki) and fell in love. Ken is still my fav character but I own with Akuma. No need to talk about Shin Akuma... I stop specials...

But MK is right behind SF. MK trilogy was the best. I use to yell with my homies AYIBOLELEEEE (raiden), COME HERE (scorpion) all the time...

Yeah, those were the good all days... (tear in my eye)

Man SBO3 made me cry, Daigo peacing out KO was good stuff. Losing all of those times to KO at Evo is so worth it when you win SBO.

Don't make me post up the super old Daigo full parry video at Evo2k4 and make all of you guys crap in your pants.

Browse around on the bottom pages and look for the old Shirube videos. They're old videos but those guys are 3s masters for real. Best players of their respective characters up to date. Well except TK, cause Kuroda is the new Q master. I heard that, that tournament banned Ken for some reason...that's why there are no Kens in a tournament. Believe me when you don't see Ken in a tournament, something is horrificly wrong.

Red Yun = KO
Pink Dudley = Kokujin
White Makoto = J
Green Q = TK
Red Remy = Pierrot
Yellow Urien = RX
White Chun = Ohnuki?
Black Chun = AFM?

^Yes I play waaaaay too much...well I use too.
If you're not gonna watch it all, atleast watch Shirube 7, and wait for the J vs. Kokujin fight.

Now that a couple more of each of the games has come out, does your opinion still remain the same?

When I was younger, I was a complete perv, with a fetish for anime girlies. XD XD (not that I'm not like that now, just... :P )

Street Fighter--- no, Cammy and Chunners FTW! Either way, you get treated to a whole lotta leg! XD

EDIT: But taking now into account? Let me be honest, most 3d fighters that try to do the whole fireballs and shoryukens thing don't appeal to me, I find that better left to 2d games most of the time.

So just because SF has currently stopped at the 2D Third Strike with its beautiful, luscious imagination and deep gameplay, vs. the increasingly boring 3D MK games, I STILL give this to Street Fighter.

Street Fighter II will always be my favorite old school 2D fighter.

However, Mortal Kombat was great for its time. Plus, it had Fatalities -- those are always fun.

FINISH HIM.

...pure awesomeness.

Sf beats MK easily. This isn't a contest, it's a slaughter.

SF2 was one of the best fighting games EVER! SF3 really nailed it for me though, awesome characters, deep fighting engine, and Mokoto (I think that was the name of the karate girl). I loved playing as her.

Plus, all the characters in MK are so dull compared to the colorful cast of SF. In fact, there pretty much dull compared to any fighter. Though if I had to choose based on characters, I'd probably give it to KOF.

Today, however, I am a GG fan. That game kicks ass like no other.

Oh sure, Street Fighter was the better series back then (can't say the same now... SF hasn't had a new iteration for quite some time while the past few MK games have been excellent) but my memories of pumping in quarters and selecting Sub-Zero is much more vivid than my memories of SF. The total cheesiness of the motion capture actors (which looked amazing at the time... >_<) and the incredibly bloody fatalities made the game really memorable.

If I went back into time as I am now, I would be playing Street Fighter. But as a child, Mortal Kombat just captured me with the fatalities and rumored secrets that kids tried over and over again to unlock. (HOW DO YOU MAKE THE DAMN TREE EAT PEOPLE?!!)

And on that note: Every single Mortal Kombat 3 Fatality (http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/video/every-motal-kombat-3-fatality-160359.php)

Witness all the glory of recycled sounds and graphics! And babalities!

Mortal Kombat all the way for me..... played it first at arcade (the old 2d action one).... then watched the movies and got interested in games .... so yeah mortal kombat hands down for me....

street fighter series seems boring or might be the characters who looked boring...most just seemed like normal ppl and all..... so it never interested me... while mortal kombat was more like fantasy or supernatural or something of that sort and interested me more......

I liked Street Fighter series. The Mortal Kombat series had worst graphics, worst characters(power wise), and worst gameplay. The Street Fighter series was awesome

SF. Take away the frankly ridiculous looking gore from the old MK games and the core gameplay is nowhere near as good as S.F's.
