German advert featuring Hitler having sex in Aids awareness

A tasteless advertisement featuring Adolf Hitler having sex has been condemned by HIV charities.

The steamy advert, filmed by a German charity, features the couple having sex - but only at the end is the man revealed to be Hitler.

The ad also features mocked-up posters of Josef Stalin and Saddam Hussein having sex with naked women.

The tagline reads: 'Aids is a mass murderer'. It is set to be shown on German television next week.

German Aids-awareness charity Regenbogen e.V. said it wants to shake people up by linking Aids with mass murder, citing figures that show Aids has killed 30 million people worldwide.

But British charities have hit back with concerns that it could be Aids sufferers, not the disease itself, that become associated with Hitler.

UK-based HIV charity the Terrence Higgins Trust says it is concerned the advert could be 'insensitive', by stigmatising people with the condition.

Vicky Sheard, the organisation's policy officer, told the BBC News website: 'One in four people in the UK with HIV doesn't know he or she has it, so anything that could increase stigmatisation and discourage them from coming forward to be tested isn't helpful.'

She noted that the advert did not appear to contain any public health messages encouraging people to prevent Aids by practising safe sex.

Nor did it note that treatment of the disease has advanced so that it is no longer a death sentence. 'It's very possible for people with HIV to live a healthy lifespan,' she said.

However the Das Comitee advertising agency said the shock value of the advert is designed to scare people into safe sex.

'We asked ourselves what face we could give to the virus, and it couldn't be a pretty face,' Dirk Silz, creative director of Das Comitee, told AFP news agency.

'The campaign is designed to shake people up, to bring the topic of Aids back to centre stage, and to reverse the trend of unprotected sexual intercourse.'
