How good is the Flame of Recca manga? I've seen some of the anime, but I've heard the manga is much better, I was gonna put it on my X-mas list, but then I found it's translated by Viz...who have a bad reputation with their translations of Naruto, so I was wondering if the translations are any good, do they change any names, and should I buy it? Thanks ^_^

Flame of Recca is my favorite manga of all time. It's been #1 for a long time... and that manga is just awesome. The story are emotional, the characters' backgrounds and development are just wonderfully thought out, even the powers are so cool. Oh man... sersiouly, I high suggest it. The art may seem horrible the first few volumes, but it improves!!

I've watched the whole series of Flame of Recca, and it's on my favorites list..but the anime doesn't cover the whole story; it stops at a certain place, while the manga keeps on going. The ending of the anime kind of leaves you hanging...but it's still good nonetheless. I've never read the manga, but someone mentioned boxtorrents...so I might check there. Other than that, I have nothing else to say -- hope that helps.

Flame of Recca is one great manga. I like the idea of two brothers fighting each other. I've read the manga up to the end and i really recommend to read it to anyone who hasn't.
Umm, but ithink it's kinda resembles Yu Yu Hakusho in some ways, especially when urabutousatsujin part. Don't you think so?

i just finished reading flame of recca. I have a couple questions and comments for anyone who has finished reading the manga.

Was anyone else disappointed when Joker died at the end? I sure was. He was becoming my favorite character. Also did it piss anyone else off how the hokage members would never kill anyone? Even the really evil guys like the plant guy(can't remember name), they would let live. This really pissed me off to no extent. I know they don't want to be like Kurei but still. I mean i could see them leaving most of them alive, but seriously, how do they not kill anyone. Very LAME to me.

Well, the Hokage is supposed to be good, as opposed to Uruha. The anime doesn't do the manga justice, though. Whoever made Kurei red ought to be chopped up and fed to the dogs.

I awhile ago i started reading Flame of Recca, i didnt have high expectations but was suprised and happy to note i liked the characters, liked the setting, and liked the idea behind the story.

So far i have read up to Vol 4, so please no spoilers after that :amuse

Cheers :)

Ah i shall keep reading then :D

I dont mind 'some sad bits', it's Manga's like Death Note, Evangelion, Berserk and Gantz that start getting to me after a while, even if i like them at first.

Okay i dont mind a few Spoilers if you would be kind enough to answer a few Q's? >_>

We talking Naruto Wave County/Sarutobi's death and funeral sad? or 'Holy crap...' sad? lol

Does the Romance between Recca and Yanagi get a little deeper or just usual Shonen Manga/Ranma (Implied but nothing actually happens) type?

Is there a lbreak in the action close at the end of Vol 4? i was just thinking was was going to settle down for a few relaxing chapters when i saw the end of Vol 4.

Does Recca actually make it through a Volume without bleeding every few pages? :P

Heh

I always hate that empty feeling you get from some Manga's, same feeling you get with a lot of Books.

In the anime, Recca won by default because Kurei had to..uh, I can't remember. But in the manga, Recca defeated Kurei fair and square. Kurei turned "good" in the end and returned to the past. Joker, however, was killed.

A little reveiw I made on the anime:
Series: Flame of Recca
Release Date: 1997
Genre: Pure action
Number of Episodes: 42

Overview:Recca Hanabishi is a ninja, but is nearly is killed in an accident. However, a girl named Yanagi heals him with her powers. Later, the two are tracked down by a woman who attacks them. She tells Recca to ignite his flame, but he is clueless. Just as she hurts Yanagi, Recca releases a powerful flame upon the woman. She is excited to see this. It turns out that Recca was a baby, from the Hokage Clan of the past, that was sent to the future in order to escape death. Now, Recca is the leader of the new Hokage Clan who must stop his half brother, Kurei, from kidnapping Yanagi.

Personal Opinion: Action, action, action. The only thing that i can sum up from this anime, Flame of Recca is a no holds bar action-fest for those action junkies :)

Flame of Recca is a slight suprise for me, it has a nice setting, potentially good characters and a premise of a solid-ish story, however, all of this was wasted early on and nothing much is acheived from this... apart from the action!
Flame of Recca is simply superb with its action, generally intense and sometimes choregraphed nicely to create a nice amount of tension between episodes. Fights are regularly frantic, intense and most of it don't make sense, though sometimes not stylish (Noir) or as clever as other action series i've seen (HxH for one) , it's made up with its quantity and nice use of elemental weapons which keeps a nice range of 'X-men moves'.

Unfortunately, the anime suffers with total lack of character development (though there are a TON of characters) , story-line cohesion and its admittedly shoddy, lazy and inconsistent animation. Very damaging factors for my liking, however, i give this anime benefit of the doubt as it has provided me a lot of entertainment with its nice display (and quantity) of action scenes.

Overall, an almost brainless action series, which lacks characteristics of a 'Great overall' anime, however, it does well with what it does best. The action.

Grade: B

The anime is a decent series but not amazing, I would go for the YYH anime instead, and I would read the Hunter x Hunter manga first because its better than Recca manga.

Also the ending of the anime is quite disappointing with the ending. Did Kurie die? The ending left a decent amount of questions about it.

The anime ends at the end of the tournament, but it's a bit different from the manga.

Kurei and Recca are "evenly matched." They destroy the Kurei clone, and Kurei goes after Mori's car, we don't see what happens, but Mori tries to run him over, and there's an off screen explosion.

Then the protagonist cast leaves you with a bunch of questions after leaping onto recca who's still on that platform.

So, yeah, the manga is by far better, closing all the loose ends.

GeniusShikamaru
07-11-2005, 05:45 AM
The anime ends half way into the manga. The last chapter that still has relation to the anime is around ch. 155. The manga has 300 total chapters. Which means only half was put on anime and some of that was left out as well.

In the manga Joker and Koganei do fight. and thats when he uses the six form of the kugon anki. Some other fights are also a bit different. And minor characters have much bigger role in the manga than the anime. Like Raiha. I haven't read all the manga yet but it certainly is much better than the anime.

*merged all Flame of Recca threads*

It's decent but definitely not one of my favourites. What pissed me off the most is that it was super repetitive and almost all the bad guys become good ones... at some point I almost decided to stop reading... there wasn't a decent villain. Though the ending was beautiful.

Daniee
08-15-2005, 05:31 PM
Woah, can't believe this is still alive :blink

Anyway, during all this time, I read the whole series. I was kinda dissapointed...it was rather cliche and I don't really like tournament fighting, but the art was awesome, and the characters were funny and entertaining so that's why I continued (Fuko:love )

I give it a 5/10, just passable

Wow, so I just finished reading Flame of Recca again (for like the 3rd time lol not 3 times in a row, its been like a year since I last read it) and I just had to revive this thread to talk about its awesomeness :P

It is seriously the best Shounen manga IMO, and one of my favorite manga's period. Im a pretty big fan of Shounens, I love One Piece, Naruto, HxH, Inuyasha, etc... but Flame of Recca beats them all with ease. Its far more mature then most Shounen. As much as I love Naruto and One Piece, it they can be pretty kiddy at times. Its got an awesome plot that runs throughout the better part of the manga and great, interesting characters (Joker!!! :P). Seriously, the characters are what make this manga great, there are only a handful of characters out of hundreds that I didnt like. FoR is funny as hell, yet can be completely serious at the same time. The fighting in inovative and origional. Its nothing like DBZ style fighting where "My power > your power so therefore I win". People's skill, will, and fighting styles are often highlighted rather then their raw strength/power. Furthermore, its the ONLY major Shounen manga that I can think of that actually does romance well. Sure, its not a Shoujo so dont expect too much romance, but the relationship between Yanagi and Recca, Fuuko and Domon, Fukko and Raiha (<3), Kurei and Neon, were all done great IMO.

If you are a fan of Shounen (which Im guessing most people are here since this is a Naruto board lol) then you owe it to yourself to read this manga (DO NOT WATCH THE ANIME!!!). You can seriously read it over and over again and still love it. There is a little bit for everyone in this manga and I think most people will love it too if they give it a chance.

From what I've researched, the anime is a far cry from the manga. Manga is way better.

The anime also has a modified version of what really happens. SODOM is not in the anime as I remember.

Limitles Shadow

The manga was alright.

Overall the manga wasn't anything special (it was dragged out far too long) but there are some very memorable moments.

The joker (one of if not the most powerful) person in the series was just an awsome guy. He was truly a Joker (in many senses of the word) even when he released his trumph card (which was awsome - I had a feeling he would do that, it is only natural to assume so due to the nature of his abilities, but I never guessed what would happen to him).

My favorite character is Raiha. I guess I enjoy the characters that are both quiet and powerful who don't like to reveal their true personalities/powers immediately.

your kinda right. But the powerups weren't the thing that anoyeed me the most.
After Orihime was kidnapped, this all SODOM fighting arc was 'game like' or kinda 'cliche'. I still like it (esp when Joker shows up in his uber cool new look:nuts) but sth is lacking in it.

When Tendou Jigoku vs 'anybody that is near' starts, is seems be be allright again.

And the ending
I never ecspected that Orihime will die, and then change into flame dragon/angel.

The only thing that bugs me really is that it dosnt get the recognition it deserves. Everyone knows Hunter x Hunter, One Piece, Bleach, YYH, DBZ, etc... but Flame of Recca is atleast as good as all of those if not better IMO yet its way less popular then any of those. Oh well, atleast I enjoy it :P

I'm almost done with the anime and it seems like they won't finish it and they'll just stop at a random part...so does anyone know what chapter or whatever the anime ends so i can just continue by reading the manga and i dont have to dl the whole series? thanks a lot!

Chapter 157 ends the tourniment and that is where the anime ends. Chapter 157 ends up Volume 16 so you can start reading from Volume 17.

However, if you have the time/interest I recommend reading the manga from the beginning. The anime and manga are pretty different at times (more so towards the end of the anime) and the manga is even better then the anime IMO

i have finished reading the manga. pretty good. i could see soem of the relationships between yu yu hakusho and flame of recca, but overall, loved it. altho the end kinda really dragged on. like i was REALLY bored with some of the fights. but the end proved to be really good. and i thought it repetitive w/how the enemy is always spared or w/e and becomes good. one of my favorite bad guy characters was Rasen. He looked so koooool. The drawings got very good later on too, especially Mikigami. so yeah. i enjoyed it overall. ^__^

So, I don't want to step on anybody's toes, but I've read the first four or five volumes of FoR and feel like I've seen it all done before. How much better do you guys think this manga gets in the later volumes? It's going to take some significant improvement from where it's heading right now to keep me interested.

IMO it gets better. The first few volumes really were the weakest part in my opinion and then it just keeps getting better as it goes on. Then again, Im a BIG fan of the series *see sig lol* so I may be a little biased. Regardless, I recommend that you keep reading. IMO its the best Shounen manga around, atleast out of the ones Ive read.

Wow, I never knew the Manga still continues after the tournament, only seen the anime, and I thought it sucked that they rushed to the ending.

I tried to get it in Direct Manga, but it seems you have to pay just to download the series. x_x

Flame of Recca is currently my #1 favorite manga, and always will be.

Flame of Recca is about a 16 year old named Recca who wants to be a ninja. Later on he finds out that he was born 400 years ago to be the leader of the Hokage Clan! Recca has within in him an eight-headed dragon, each head with his or her own power and personality. Recca and Co. get forced into a death tournament where if they lose, Koran Mori would get Yanagi, a girl with the power of healing.

it may sound a lot like naruto, and may be similar in some ways, but FoR is older, published in 1995 (just to prevent people from calling it a naruto rip-off) it's by anzai, the creator of MAR (Marchen Awakens Romance) and R Princess. for more info check out Hokage Dragons in my sig.

Really good manga.
Though it looks kinda rubbish the first volumes it really picks up later with great drawings.

And Joker is one of the most bad-ass characters in manga history.

I'm the same way. I've read a ton of manga and am always reading more, but no manga has ever toppled Flame of Recca as my favorite, and I doubt one ever will.

Great manga, I've read through it about 4-5 times and I still love it :P I even single handedly run the Flame of Recca pimping project here at Naruto Fan (in my sig) :nod

A question for you fans. I watched the first few episodes of the anime, and I must say it got a tad dull and didn't sustain my interest. For one thing, it was a lot like Yu Yu Hakusho. Is the manga somehow superior? Does it get more interesting later on?

Yes on both accounts. The beginning of the manga is a bit slow, but it definatly gets batter as it goes on. The manga is also a lot better then the anime, especially later on.

Also FoR is pretty similar to YYH. If you enjoyed YYH I am confident you will also really like FoR.

Own all the Tankobons...some twice. DL'd all the scnaslations, own all the VHS subs (this was pre net), and I have a Hokage tattoo. I guess I'm a fan.

And yes, Joker rocks. As does Koganei. And Domon. Best big dumb archetype ever.

The artwork does get infinitely better later on. If you compare the artwork in the first few volumes to the later manga they look like they were done by different mangaka. Here is a random sample comparison:

beginning of the manga:
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/7159/vol1019rx8.jpg
http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/1897/vol1033cr8.jpg
http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/6892/vol1037kg8.jpg

later part of the manga:

http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/4414/flameofreccav13c1261501wx1.png

Did the anime adaptation of Flame of Recca did any justice with it or did it FAIL (I haven't read the manga)

The anime failed, especially at the end. It was more or less faithful to the manga at the beginning, but even when it was faithful it was a pretty subpar animation of the manga. The manga also continues on a lot more after the anime ended. Flame of Recca manga >>>>>>> anime IMO :P

Rika24

the anime is very different, it doesn't focus on character development and changes A LOT of stuff and leaves a lot of stuff up in the air, like who killed tokiya's sister (though you do at least find out). it also only covers volume 1-16, but FoR is a 33 volume manga series. and yes, the artwork is amazing later on. anyone that is interested in talking about FoR or want to read more about it, please visit the recca section of my forum. manga and dvd scans, a place to download the scanlations, official character popularity poll results from Japan. here it is (http://rikafire.proboards1.com/index.cgi?board=recca) (sorry, i just want some actual recca fans to talk to, i feel so alone when it comes to FoR :cry )

and yeah, Joker is awsome, he's one of my favorite characters, but Fuuko, Kaoru, and Recca are my top favorites. the thing that bothered me about the anime was that there was no betrayal on Joker's part like in the manga. Yes i did like Saicho but that part ws very important, as was Fuuko's and Kaoru's pasts. they also mess up Kurei's story. (the whole thing about his adopted mother having a bomb inside her.)

Well, I'm up to volume 22, and I am enjoying the series quite a bit. The art definitely has improved since it's beginning and I like some of the new character designs like Aoi and Rasen. I'm also surprised at how graphic and dark this series could be; Mori's new form, and some of the character backgrounds. Especially Kurei, who I disliked at first. But, I actually felt sympathy for situation and what he lost. Anyway, I'll continue reading and give some more of my thoughts.

reviving topic because i just finished the manga. The had me sad until the very very end where everything was set right. Especially when i found out about the real reason of "flame of recca" that had me very sad. Its cool how kurei is the one who killed him though at the end.

i'm up to volume 25 right now. yes there's more after the cave. i don't want to spoil anything so i'll give you some stuff but not much. Fuuko gets some special training from one of hokage's enemies. as well as a gift afterwards, team hokage goes to save yanagi from mori and they each are forced to split up to find five discs while being hunted by fighters greater than uruha (as well as a member of uruha that we all thought to be dead). also some old allies show up to help hokage (some dying too).
