Normally I wouldn't post this up, because I think its not that great an example of my work, and because it only runs for 3 chapters before it diverges into a completely new storyline, but here you go anyway! Just for the hell of it.

I hope you enjoy this. It's sci-fi, but when I wrote it a few months ago I decided not to focus too deeply on technology. Characters are actually based off of people I know, so its not completely "original".

Its called Red Sky: Across the Universe and is actually a three-chapter prologue to a much deeper story; Red Dawn. My prologues always suck...

Chapter 1: Princess Lost

Yumeria silently looked out over the desert world of Alhand as her royal escort ship; the Highflier Delta flew past the harsh planet en route to the Imperial Capital Planet of Haru Kai. She was a princess of the Haru Empire, an age old galactic kingdom that was constantly competing for dominance over their region of the otherwise unchartered Galaxy they all inhabited.
In many ways Yumeria felt it was a bleak existence, the life of a galactic princess, always touring the empire and never being able to sustain a personal life outside her family and escorts and the various politicians of the empire. Her touring had been postponed however by her older brother, Prince Shinn, and by a shock announcement. Their father, the King and Emperor, or the former King and Emperor had made a shocking and unprecedented announcement; he was retiring. Yumeria was being called back by her brother so she could be there to celebrate his coronation as King Shinn Haruki (the third). So it was because of this twist of fate she was making her trip home to Haru Kai. She was happy for her brother’s new found position, but she was happier for her father who no longer had to bear the responsibilities of Emperor. She wished she could also abdicate her position sometimes, but knew her brother would need her now that he was to become king. Her days of touring were at an end.
So now Yumeria watched out over this bleak desert world and was reminded of her own situation. But now she was shaken from her thoughts by a familiar and gentle voice.

“Yumeria,” she said, ignoring royal protocol by not calling her ‘highness’. Yumeria turned around to see a young woman of 150 cm in height standing beside her; she had plain black short hair, tied back, with the most peculiar deep red eyes. She was dressed in a teal coloured sleeveless shirt and purple baggy pants with converse shoes. “The Captain requests your presence on the Bridge immediately,” she half-smiled bowing.

Yumeria was 176 cm tall and had shoulder-length dark hair with some strands that hung between her eyes and ends that pointed outward from her neck. She had large brown eyes and she wore olive green three-quarter pants and a white woollen jacket with two rows of buttons with a pink t-shirt underneath. Her pale skin glowed unnaturally in the neon lights of her room on the Highflier Delta. Yumeria hadn’t really cared about formal dress with herself or her people, so it was easy to mistake her and the young woman as regular galactic tourists most of the time. “Alright then, Akemi,” she said turning back to the window.
Akemi was Yumeria’s oldest friend and personal bodyguard at that. They were both only 19 and had known each other since they were 5, but between themselves and the crew of the Delta Yumeria was taken care of. She didn’t need the supervision of her brother or her father when she toured, but Akemi and the crew were like her family anyway. Despite the bleakness of her position, there was a quality to her touring she enjoyed.

Together they made their way to the Bridge of the Delta. The Captain regarded them with a formal bow and looked at their attire curiously. Unlike the two girls, the Captain and the acting crew mates on the Bridge were all dressed in uniforms. “Princess,” he began and gestured for her to stand with him. “We are currently above the atmosphere of the planet of Alhand, in only one solar system away from Haru Kai, so it’ll only be a few days before we arrive. It’s an imperial mining planet, very arid and dry. We are planning to stop over here to refuel and recuperate, but we cannot stay very long. We have received a transmission from the Governor’s Palace on Alhand warning us of a disturbance in this solar system. It seems for the past few days there has been a Red Sky ship terrorising merchant ships for supplies, could get out of hand if they notice us here.”

“Red Sky?”

“Err; they are a hostile faction within this region, highness. Not very large at all, but surprisingly dangerous. One of their leaders is a known political criminal called Kakeru Wei, he is openly against the Empire’s expansion into this solar system and is fighting to remove us, or so people say. Really not much is known about him,” the Captain explained.

“I see. Well…do we have the ability to counter an attack if they launched one?” Yumeria asked looking around the Bridge.

“We are told there is only one ship that can threaten us here, so yes. If they attack we can successfully repel them. Of course once we make our stopover on Alhand we’ll be completely restocked on ammunition and you can obviously command for escort ships to follow us out of the Alhand region, highness.”

“Very well, Captain. I’ll ask the Governor for escorts if you feel it to be necessary,” she replied not really paying attention. She was looking out the window again, at a red star on the horizon of the planet they were preparing to descend on.

“Captain, we have an incoming on our radar,” interrupted one of the crew members. “It’s a small delta-class ship, like ours. They’re getting closer.”

“Oh?” the Captain asked, turning away from Yumeria and walking over to the crew mate. “Delta-class? How close?”

“100 clicks away, approaching fast,” he replied, looking at his several monitors. He turned to the Captain. “Think it could be…?”

“Hard to say, try and establish communications with it,” the Captain said, looking closely at the monitors. He didn’t notice Yumeria was now standing directly in front of the large window now, staring at the red star that grew larger every second.

“Delta-class, this is the Highflier Delta, please respond,” the communications officer said into a headset he pressed against his ear. “Delta-class, this is the Highflier Delta. Respond.”

“This is the Sleeper Delta, delta-class, responding. What can I do for you?” The Captain and crew members on the bridge sighed in slight relief at the friendly toned response from the Sleeper Delta.

“Sleeper Delta, this is an Imperial ship, please identify yourself to us and back away from your position near our ship,” instructed the com officer.

“Very well. This is…Captain Alexie Kruzhv of the Sleeper Delta. An Imperial ship you say? Mind if I come aboard and check it out?”

The Captain and his crew all stared at each other silently. The Captain glanced over to Yumeria and Akemi, Akemi had led Yumeria away from the window were they could make out the Sleeper Delta on approach and they both walked next to the Captain. He snatched the headset off the communications officer and placed it around his head, fitting the earpieces on his ears properly. “This is the Captain of the Highflier Delta, by the Empire I am ordering your vessel to back off or it will be destroyed! Do I make myself clear Alexie Kruzhv, Red Sky fugitive?”

“Fugitive? Then you better just destroy me anyway, right?” came the arrogant response from Alexie Kruzhv. Before the Captain could give any orders, the Sleeper Delta accelerated to full speed and arched above the Highflier, firing two of its cannons at the imperial escort ship. One shot was a direct hit, and Yumeria and Akemi were both thrown to their feet.

“Get the Princess out of here, Akemi!” the Captain ordered Akemi and she got up and led Yumeria down to the Bay Deck of the Highflier. As they ran through the corridors together they could hear the sounds of plasma-cannon fire striking the ship. They reached the Bay Deck of the ship when an explosion in the ventilation shaft sent pieces of metal flying through the air. One piece of shrapnel struck Yumeria in the back of the head and she collapsed onto the floor. The world span around her and she blacked out.

---

When she woke up, some hours later, she discovered that she was no longer on the Highflier Delta. She was outside, and it was night. Beside her was a campfire, and she tried to move to discover her hands were bound behind her back. Her legs were free though, and she tried to sit up. Yumeria glanced around to see she was in the desert, and nearby was the flaming wreckage of the Highflier Delta. She was still dazed by her ordeal, but through the night she could see the illuminated figure of a man in a grey robe sitting on the other side of the fire. In the sand there protruded a sword with a magnificently decorated hilt. It was stained with blood, and the man only gazed into the fire, not acknowledging the fact Yumeria was awake.

“Where…? What happened?” she asked not really considering who this person was and what happened to her. She was still watching the Highflier Delta, not really aware of it actually being her ship.

“Just rest,” the man said, not looking at her. Behind her a sword tip was elevated above her throat. She looked up and saw another taller man dressed in a robe holding it over her.

“…Why?” she asked half wearily looking up at the taller man. His face wasn’t visible in the desert night.

“For our protection, your highness,” answered the sitting man again, finally looking up at Yumeria. His brown eyes were barely visible in the night, but they looked at her with vivid curiosity. “Don’t worry, we’re not terrorists.”

“Red Ribbon, come in Red Ribbon,” said the shorter man in the grey desert robe. He had short messy hair and carried around his neck a small transmitter. He carried the scabbard of his sword in his hands as they marched through the desert, leading her and the taller man over the sand dunes. “Red Ribbon, come in!”

“I don’t think that thing is any good, Desert Haze. It transmits your signal in old radio waves. She could be out of range,” commented the second man, who was taller and appeared to be stronger then ‘Desert Haze’. His sword was slung around his back and he walked behind Yumeria as the rear guard.

Yumeria still hadn’t remembered anything from the time she was struck to the time she woke up next to the fire, and the two men hadn’t told her anything. She was filled with a sense of loss about being what she thought was the only survivor of their apparent crash, that was until she heard the second man ask ‘Desert Haze’ about wether or not they would pull any one of the other survivors they saw from the wrecked ship, to which he replied that they would do it once ‘Red Ribbon’ arrived. Yumeria had already worked out they all spoke in codes, probably so that she wouldn’t identify them. “Well, Macintosh,” Desert Haze began. “It has to work or those other survivors won’t be survivors for long judging by their state….Red Ribbon, come in Red Ribbon!”

“This is….ibbon calling from…Theta-class, respon…” came the broken reply over the radio wave transmitter/receiver. “Stan…by for picku…”

“Thank god for that,” said the second man, ‘Macintosh’. “I want the hell off this planet.”

After a short wait, a small theta-class Troposphere flier appeared overhead. It lowered down until it was hovering only a few feet above the sand. Inside the pilot seat sat a young girl much like Yumeria. Her dark hair was tied back in a ponytail and she wore half-frame sunglasses that slid down her nose as she waved vigorously to the two men. Desert Haze took Yumeria’s hand, surprisingly gently, and helped her onboard the theta-class ship. The two men climbed in after her and gave the young woman pilot directions back to the crash site of the Highflier Delta. Yumeria wasn’t allowed to watch the two men work as they exited the theta-class. After what seemed an hour they arrived back to the small ship again, the taller man, ‘Macintosh’, carrying only one survivor over his shoulder.

“So, only one other?” asked the woman, ‘Red Ribbon’.

“Well, there were more when we found her highness last night, but they had all been critically wounded in the crash. Her highness and this one were the only two not severely hurt; I guess White Tiger should be proud of his handiwork. The princess did have a nasty bump on her head though; this one on the other hand is relatively unharmed but we found her unconscious as you can see,” Desert Haze informed. Macintosh let the other survivor down gently next to Yumeria, and to her complete shock it was none other then Akemi, alive but unconscious. All the sadness over her death that she had been bearing for the past few hours across the desert since the crash was eased instantly, and her situation didn’t seem so unpredictable anymore.

Chapter 2: In Enemy Hands / Fallen Angels

The theta-class touched down on a small cement landing pad just outside of a fortified town perched in the side of a desert mountain. From their distance, Yumeria could see the large cannons and mortar guns protruding from the mountainside as well as several red flags with the symbol of a setting sun in gold. She and Akemi were walked up a pathway to the mountain town, led by Desert Haze and flanked by Red Ribbon and Macintosh, who was carrying three backpacks over his shoulder and had given his sword to Red Ribbon. The girl called Red Ribbon didn’t look that different from Akemi, Yumeria noticed absently, but she had a certain mature look in her eyes that let Yumeria know she was serious about what she was doing.
She suspected that these people were of the Red Sky Faction, but she wasn’t certain until she approached the town and saw a delta-class assault ship landed there with the words “Sleeper” painted on the side. Akemi felt a surge of anger, but it faded with a commanding glance from Yumeria. The town was made up of fortified cement bunker domes, many of them open to the outside without doors or windows, but shielding trapdoors to bunkers carved into the side of the mountain. There were also many weapon and fuel stockpiles around the town, as well as various soldiers attending to them and the large guns.
They were lead into one of the only closed buildings of the town, and inside they saw many technicians all working different computers and equipment. There was a table in the centre of the circular workspace, seating two individuals and a white tiger sleeping at the feet of the second man. They had to avoid tripping over wires as they were led to the table and sat down opposite the two men who regarded them with mild curiosity. The first, an older man, rose and commanded everyone to have an early lunchbreak. When the room was cleared he sat down again and smiled at the two captives.

“Princess Yumeria, it’s been a long time. I’m glad you are well, I trust my associates haven’t harmed you,” the first man said gently, glancing at the three others for the last part. “How are you both?”

“How are we?! How are WE?! Our ship was shot down and we’ve been speeding through the desert all day! All of our crew are dead and we have no idea who we’re dealing with! On top of that…I’m starving,” Akemi said defiantly.

“Oh, sorry about that,” the first man said and took out a small transmitter, commanding the person on the other end of the conversation to bring in food. “Well, let me tell you who you’re dealing with. They call me Dark Hawk, but you both might know me as the former Councillor Ikuya of the Imperial Court.”

“Councillor Ikuya! So it is you!” Yumeria burst in shock. “I thought you were dead! We all did! After you left…”

“That was a long time ago, my dear Yumeria,” Ikuya said gently. “But I may not be the only one you recognise.” He gestured behind Yumeria, and she turned around and saw Desert Haze standing behind her, still in his desert robe unlike Macintosh who had taken his off. He regarded the princess with a slight smile. “This is Kakeru Wei, he’s my protégé, and one of my lieutenants, we call him Desert Haze.”

“Kakeru Wei?! You…You’re a terrorist!”

“And the fun doesn’t stop there, highness,” Kakeru said snidely, pointing at the second seated man with the sleeping tiger. “That, as you may have guessed, is White Tiger; Alexi Kruzhv. The one who shot down your dear ship.”

“Yes, that is Alexi Kruzhv, and the other two are Trent and Cian, but you may already know them as Macintosh and Red Ribbon. These people are all apart of my most trusted, and invaluable to our cause,” Ikuya explained. “In time you will understand, but for now you and your friend must be thirsty. Please eat.” A soldier had walked in and placed a platter of foods and fruit on the table. “We will leave you now to rest; Kakeru will show you to your quarters…Please, don’t think of us as terrorists.” He stood up with Alexi, who nudged his tiger with his foot, waking it, and they walked out of the building in silence.

“Trent, remember we’ll need to salvage the wreckage of the Highflier soon,” Kakeru said in passing to Trent as he picked up all of their gear and exited behind the tiger with Cian.

“So…what are you going to do with…us?” Akemi asked between bites of her apple, glaring at Kakeru. “Kill us? Make us apart of your faction? Ransom us?

“Ransom you both, we need the money. No offence; but having the princess of the empire as your captive is just walking trouble, so we’re anxious to unload you back on your brother as soon as we can.”

“Glad to know I don’t need to stay here,” Yumeria said coldly at Kakeru. “I don’t like the company of terrorists.”

“The only terrorist is your father for his crimes against these people,” Kakeru said. “But I guess you wouldn’t know, living the life of a sheltered spoilt princess. You know nothing of the *real* universe.”

“And you know nothing of my family or who I am! You just hold your prejudices but you don’t search for the truth!”

“Well, to each his – or her – own,” Kakeru said. “You are free to wander the town, but don’t think of escaping because you don’t have the activation codes to any of our vehicles and it’s a hundred miles in every direction to civilisation and we could hunt you down in less then a day.”

“As if we’re in any condition to run anyway after our ship went down,” Akemi said, still glaring.

“Just remember, highness, that even though you might know Ikuya from his imperial days, this is *my* town, not his. If you want a place to sleep, you’ll find shelter in the large stone hostel carved into the mountainside not far from here,” Kakeru said picking an apple out of the platter and walking off, leaving the two to their food.

---

The Next Day

Kakeru sat on an outcropping of rock overlooking his fortified town as the sun set behind the mountain, putting an end to the days work of the faction unit stationed there. Normally the other Red Sky captains, Alexi, Cian, Trent and Ikuya would be in other parts of the planet, or even solar system, working towards the Red Sky objective in other ways, but recent events had brought most of the captains together apart from a few who were still preoccupied. Ikuya had big plans in the works for the princess’ ransom money, plans that would see the faction catapult their way to power. What they were though only he and Alexi, the ace pilot of their faction, knew. So it wasn’t hard for Kakeru to guess it was some sort of battleship.
Kakeru was only 19, the same age as Princess Yumeria and Akemi, and still headstrong and emotional like most teenagers but he was different in a very special way to everyone else around him. He was the product of Imperial experiments, a test subject in the quest to genetically engineer the world’s best soldier. It wasn’t unheard of, genetic engineering of an embryo to predetermine what kind of person they would be, and modify their characteristics, but Kakeru was different because he actually survived past the age of 10. Most subjects to genetic engineering never lived past their tenth birthday, but Kakeru had lasted 9 years beyond that. Because of his genetic engineering he was an incredibly talented soldier with mental and physical capabilities surpassing those of a normal human being, but he suffered from multiple side affects from the years he had been tested on as a teenager by Imperial scientists. It was only by pure chance he escaped and was taken in by the newly formed Red Sky Faction three years ago.
Now that Princess Yumeria was in his custody, he would have liked nothing better then to kill her and get his revenge on the retired King, but he knew better then that. Besides, the princess had no idea of the tortures he experienced at her father’s hand for the sake of science.
He had large red-tinged brown eyes and dirty brown hair that was normally held back by a leather headband but now hung down over his face. He had taken off his grey desert robes and instead wore a white shirt with extended sleaves attached by leather straps and white pants. He dressed in white in the desert; the climate was far too hot for a more adsorbing colour. His brown-red eyes were not the product of genetic engineering, but the 2 of his 3 Red Sky years spent in this desert community. All the natives and long term residence of his harsh planet experienced a change of colour in their eyes. In another year all of the brown pigmentation in his eyes would be gone, replaced by the red colouration.

He was stirred from his thoughts by the sound of footsteps behind him, someone walking up the ridge to meet him or just enjoy the view, so he didn’t turn around to greet them. “Nice view?” a familiar female voice asked him, a voice that almost made him fall off his rock and tumble down the mountainside. He turned around to see standing behind him Seraphita Feris, definitely sight for sore eyes.

“You?! What are you doing here?” he asked in bewilderment.

Seraphita just smiled at Kakeru and flung a strand of bright pink hair from her face. She wore a light white cloak that came down to her knees and was drawn over her body; she wore white colours, like Kakeru, to avoid being toasted in the heat of the desert and stood only slightly shorter then Kakeru. She had a lean and outwardly had a perfect body, but underneath her clothing she was scarred, mainly along her back. Wounds that had only psychically healed, but not emotionally. The irises in her eyes were bright red, one of many things that showed she was a native of Alhand. “What, I can’t come and visit my favourite foreigner once in a while? You know at this rate you could pass for one of us.”

“I suppose I could, but how did you get past my men so easily? You would have been noticed by either the garrison or other Red Sky men in the town trying to get here,” Kakeru said puzzled.

Seraphita chuckled lightly. “There are just some things about our people you’ll never understand.”

“Same goes for you, Sera. There are some things about Imperials you’ll never get,” Kakeru said turning back to his view.

“Imperials? But you’re with the Red Sky faction aren’t you?”

“Well, a person’s politics doesn’t necessarily dictate where they came from. I was never apart of royalty or high society, but I was born inside the grand ol’ palace on Haru Kai, the capital of this empire that oppresses us both. Its some story, I’ll tell you some time,” Kakeru explained.

“Well for a foreigner you’re not half-bad. After all, who would think of doing what you did for me? Not even your own comrades would have done it,” Seraphita said, losing some of the kindness in her tone. “And not even your own comrades approved.”

“They don’t have to approve. A person’s politics also doesn’t dictate every little thing they do,” Kakeru said glumly. “But really I was only in the wrong place at the right time, Sera.”

“Politics mustn’t account for much by your standards, Haze,” Seraphita said sitting next to him watching as the shadow of the mountain drew with the setting of the sun.

“Well, it accounts for enough to give me one giant headache. I’m not sure if your so-called spirits have told you yet, but we have a new guest among us, a little link in the royal family chain that I have to take care of until her brother pays up,” Kakeru said dully. He pointed down the mountainside, to the town below and to a girl of regal posture and grace with dark hair and fine pale skin. “I present Princess Yumeria.”

“Is that so? Are you the prince charming stealing her away from her wicked stepsisters?”

“Err…More like the evil witch keeping her locked up in a tower while she spins gold, or however it goes.”

“Why not prince charming? She’s fairly cute, I mean for an Imperial.”

“Then why don’t *you* ask her out? She’s nothing but trouble and having her around is putting my people in danger, we just need that big fat ransom.”

“You foreigners are all so materialistic; you may start looking like one of my people but you think like a foreigner.”

“Well sitting around the in dirt talking to spirits and drinking cactus tea isn’t going to free anyone, Miss Native,” Kakeru taunted, prompting a nudge to the ribs from Seraphita.

“So I guess that means you’re not going to tell me what you’re all up to?” Seraphita asked. “You told me about your guest after all.”

“Hell, not even I know what’s happening next. It’s all left up to Commander Ikuya to decide, Sera,” Kakeru said.

Seraphita stretched backwards, mindful of her scars, when she noticed something far off into the distance sweeping across the desert and approaching them. Then that one something became many somethings, all speeding across the barren flats and approaching. As they approached she could make out that they were… “Hey, Haze?”

“Yeah?”

“I don’t suppose…when you found the Princess you searched her for some sort of transmitter or communication device?”

“Not…personally, why do you ask?” Kakeru asked puzzled.

“Because those Imperial bastards are approaching, thought you’d like to know,” Seraphita said standing up casually.

Bells started to ring from the patrols below in town and Kakeru shot to his feet, for the second time almost slipping of the rock to his death down the ridge. He saw the town below quickly changed from a sleepy hostel to a bustling fortification, with the handful of garrison soldiers, some former Imperial soldiers and others native and foreign mercenaries and militia but all aligned to the Red Sky Faction all snap into action, arming themselves and manning the guns. “I don’t suppose you’ll be sticking around for the fireworks? Going to ‘disappear’ on me?”

“Are you kidding me?! I’m twice the warrior you’ll ever be!” Seraphita boasted standing up too, more gracefully then Kakeru could manage. She threw back her white cloak to reveal a white t-shirt with a v neck that came down to her midriff and a pair of black three-quarter pants that holstered a small bulky handgun as well as a sickle. She took out the handgun, a customised slug gun, from her belt and followed Kakeru down the ridge towards the town.

“Kakeru! Where the hell were you?!” Alexi shouted slinging a rocket launcher to his shoulder as he saw Kakeru and Seraphita running into town. “And who the hell is this?”

“She’s a native, a famous tribal warrior known throughout this entire planet. Long-time friend of our little community, ask Ikuya,” Kakeru said.

“A famous tribal warrior? Her? You can’t be serious,” Alexi said snidely.

“No, I don’t either but you’d be surprised,” Kakeru said flinching from a displeasured glance from Seraphita.

Two of the leading assault ships had arrived and the manned guns opened fire on them. They both dived and fired two missiles at the town, which struck one of the fortified bunkers sending large pieces of cement hurling in all directions. Seraphita and Alexi both dived to avoid pieces of cement striking them, and Kakeru relied on his genetically modified reflexes to avoid the flying debris. “Shit! They’re using highly explosive missiles, not energy cannons! They’ll tear into our defences effortlessly!” Alexi shouted scrambling to his feet.

“Alexi! You need to get into the Sleeper! It’s not an atmosphere flier but it’s our best hope against them!” Kakeru shouted. “They’re here for the princess! I’ll go find her while Seraphita gets to one of the cannons! I’ll be damned if that ransom is going up in flames!”

“The sun has almost completely set; I won’t be able to see them in the darkness!” Seraphita shouted over the sound of cannon and gunfire.

“We need to lure them close to the fortifications without them firing on us! We can use the princess to shield the guns, they won’t fire on her!” Alexi suggested.

“Are you NUTS?! They won’t see her in the darkness and blow her away!”

“Alright, I’m getting in the Sleeper! Where’s my tiger?!” Alexi yelled running off to where his large delta-class assault ship was landed, avoiding the gunfire being hailed down on the town by the miniguns of the attacking ships. The white tiger appeared by his side seconds after it was called.

“Okay, I’m going to be at the mortar guns! I may be a tribal, but I know how to blast Imperial ass!” Seraphita yelled and ran towards one of the gun positions.
