Funny thing is that you can actually learn both languages without knowing a single rule. I know because it's my case.

It's the language I hate the least. At my school, there only language choices are Spanish, German, French, and Latin. I didn't want to take the other languages. Plus, I hear that Spanish was a good language to know for jobs because of immigration. I'll probably have to learn Chinese/Mandarin since I plan to go into business.

Gringo- Usually someone from the US. Sometimes it means any light-skinned person. I've heard several versions of the origins, but they all basically say the same thing, that the US army was in some country, and that the locals, who at least knew the color of their uniforms and "irse" in English, would shout "Green go!" at the armymen.

Some latinos, and some gringos for that matter, see "gringo" as offensive. I don't.

Edit: Katon, "Is there" and "are there" are usually translated to "hay" instead of "está allí." Also, there is a way! Go to regional and language settings in the control panel, and you can add a Spanish keyboard layout. There are several. I have "Spanish(Traditional Sort)". Then, when you want to use it, you hit the left alt + shift to change it. Hit it again to go back to English. If you have trouble knowing where the keys are, you can use the onscreen keyboard to see where some things are. It's under Programs, Accessories, Accessability in the Start menu.

The only spanish I know is what I retained from elementary education more than 6 years ago. Basic stuff like colors, numbers 1-1000, simple greetings, and that's basically it.

The word gringo itself is not despective, you have to add some other words to make it an insult.

just look at some of the titles of the movies/shows when they translate them.

I've never heard the terms gachupín or gabacho before, here's what I found about both terms (thanks to wikipedia, lol):

Gabacho:

La palabra "gringo" ha perdido mucho de su sentido despectivo en México, pues los propios estadounidenses se autonombran "gringos". Más común es oír de pobladores y productos de ese país: "el güero es gabacho", "esta cosa es gabacha" y "me voy al gabacho".

Rafael Uña comenta que la palabra "gabacho" en España sigue significando "francés", pero de una forma despectiva, y nunca significa "estadounidense".


Gachupín:

Nombre dado por los indígenas mexicanos a los españoles durante el tiempo después de la conquista de México, en referencia a las espuelas que usaban los españoles y el tipo de calzado usado por ellos, el cual era desconocido por los indígenas.

En otras palabras gabacho en España significa francés y en México gringo (ambos despectivos), en el resto de latinoamérica estas palabras no se usan.

I remember taking a year of spanish back in 8th (I think) grade (I switched to Latin the next year). To the question "Que dia es hoy?", I would reply, "hoy es martes". "Hoy es treinta de enero de 2007" is what I would say in response to "Cual es la fecha de hoy?" (What is today's date [as opposed to day]). I am not absolutley shure about this, but either way you go, you should be right.

Well sorry, but actually it IS correct :laugh It's commonly used by people here in Spain (yep, I'm Spanish, from a town near to the border with France). You use "de" when speaking about the 1900's for example as in "spring of 1998" (primavera de mil novecientos noventa y ocho); y "del" when speaking about the 2000's, as in "summer of 2003" (verano del dosmil tres). That's because phonetically de_dosmil becomes an assimilated sound, and well, it doesn't sound quite good. At least to Spanish people. ^^U

Yes, you made a good literally translation, but "¿Como es usted?" would be translated into english in something like "How do you look like?" or something along those lines, i can't give it a precise translation into english neither... xDD, just that it is a different thing >.<.

On a side note, if you wanna use it in a more impersonal manner, better say "¿Como estás?". Shorter and easier to remember IMO.

Don't take all this as a critic, i'm just trying to help >.<, as much as i would appreciate if someone tries to correct my mid level english xD.

I was wondering, while I was at my French class, why some languages like Spanish and French have Subjunctive and other like English and German don't. If you don't know, subjunctive is one of three modes that verbs can have ( the others are indicative and imperative ) and that express subjectivity so, can't english speakers express subjectivity and only objectivity ?

It's pretty difficult to understand it if you're not a native speaker of one of the languages derivated from latin in fact, is the most difficult thing to study of spanish. Subjunctive is just the opposite of Indicative (objectivity) ans express subjectivity.

For example,

"I'd like that him comes tomorrow"
Spanish : "Espero que venga mañana" (subj.)
French: " Je voudrais qui'il vienne demain " (subj.)

I think the basics would be:
YO (I): necesitO, quierO, hablO, entiendO
TU (You): necesitAS, quierES, hablAS, entiendES
EL (He/She): necesitA, quierE, hablA, entiendE
NOSOTROS (We): necesitAMOS, querEMOS, hablAMOS, entendEMOS
ELLOS (They): necesitAN, quierEN, hablAN, entiendEN

And then you add the.. uhm, is it verb? :laugh applying the same rules.

For example:
YO: necesito hablar español, quiero hablar español, hablo español, entiendo español
TU: necesitas hablar español, quieres hablar español, hablas español, entiendes español
EL: necesita hablar español, quiere hablar español, habla español, entiende español

You can think of "sobre todo" as a preposition+noun. And yes, It works the same as "above all" (same structure: preposition+noun).

Wow. I'm an idiot, so I just skipped the rest of this thread. So, I have been taking Spanish, but it is very basic:

So, alright, one of the first things to know is how to conjugate verbs. There are 3 different infinitive (you know, to "insert verb here, like talk. To talk) verb endings ar, er, and ir (not to be confused with the verb ir, or to go) they each conjugate a different way, depending who you are talking to. Also, the ll in Spanish is pronounced like a y. Ella is pronounced ayaa, etc

Yo (I)

Tu (you, informal, with an accent on the u)

El (he, not to be confused with el (the) because the he el has an accent) Ella (she) Usted (he/she, formal)

Nosotros (We, with one or more male in it) Nosotras (no male in "us")

vosotros (you guys, only used in Spain)

Ellos (they, with one or more Male) Ellas (they, with no males) Ustedes (you guys in Central America, you guys, in Spain, it's you guys (formal)

So, now I'm going to conjugate a verb for the ar, er, and ir verb endings. I will do it for each subject.

"Hablar" -to talk

Yo- Hablo

Tu- Hablas

El, Ella, Usted - Habla

Nosotros/as - Hablamos

Vosotros - Hablais (hablice with an ice sound)

Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes - Hablan

now, for an er ending:

correr - to run

Yo- corro

Tu- corres

El, ella, Ustedes - corre

Nosotros/nosotras - corremos

vosotros - correis (once again, like ice but with an e sound)

Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes - corren

And finally, the ir ending

compartir - to share

Yo - comparto

Tu - compares

El, Ella, Usted - comparte

Nosotros/Nosotras - comparimos

Vosotros - compartis

Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes - comperten

So, Here is a chart, made by moi, that shows all this confusing stuff in an easier formal:

igual :equal

why do we use 'tanto' instead of 'tan'? because we're talking about money (noun)

and 'tan' goes with the adj.

josé canta peor que juan manuel

another example...
I'm more beautiful than you (:P )

=> soy más hermosa que tú

you replace it.



the nouns are no problem.. but how do you form
" as [adj.] as..."
" [comp.] than ... "
"he has more than 300 cds.."

in here we have a little change: él tiene más de 300 cds
but that's just because of the number*

example: I have more than two rings = Yo tengo más de dos anillos.

*if we change te sentence like this : "he has more cds than you" = él tiene más cds que tú.

mmm.. no

más is always más.

más dinero, más grande/más grandeS

tan stays in tan when u use an adj.
and as I said it in the previous reply, you use tanto(s)/tanta(s)
with nouns.

look, a very simple way to know when you have to use them:

I have as much girlfriendS as you = yo tengo tantaS amigaS como tú

tanta goes with the words that end in an "a" ex: tanta agua(water)
tantaS goes the ones that end un "aS" ex: tantas casas(houses)
in general, with all the words that have an "a" in the last syllabe


I have as much boyfriends as you = yo tengo tantos amigos como tú

tanto with an "o" ex: tanto dinero(movey)
tantoS with "oS" ex: tantos cigarros(cigarrets)

and again, with the words that have an "o" and "i" in the last syllabe.
tantos lapices(from lapiz) (pencils)

and if you find an "es", is the plural way of the noun... ex: amistad(friendship), amistades (friendships).
the same rule rules (xD) here:

tanta amistad
tantas amistades

regardless of the termination

then you have "que"

that's what I want

cuan: for size, quality, or intensity..

how good you are?
¿cuan bueno eres?

you can replace it for "que tan"

-> que tan bueno eres

how big is your house?
¿cuan grande es tu casa?
