Nirvana- even though i don't really like them much at all, i can't deny that kurt cobain started grunge music.

Motorhead-some might argue that metallica was the defining band of speed metal, but motor head came far before metallica, was one of the first.

Black Sabbath-they are one of the most innovative bands ever, almost every
band i listen to i find black sabbath similarites and inspirations.

KoRn-they started the whole nu metal genre and well... they rock.

Green Day/The Offspring- i put these two together because the albums smash and dookie came out around the same time, those two were kind of the roots of future punk bands.

Ramones/Sex Pistols/Clash- about the same reason as above, only far earlier.

Pink Floyd- nuff said.

Queen- " " "

can;t really think of much else right now

WTF?? linkin park didnt influence nothing...the type of music they did had been done much before they did...the only thing is they were much more commercial so they got famous...

anyways how is it that people are forgetting such important bands like the following:

rage against the machine-started what is now called rap rock and nu-metal etc...first band to mixture rap with rock(in all there musics)

Nirvana-most important band of the 90's.influenced hundreds of other bands and still does nowadays.

The Cure-there reputation speaks for itself...

pink floyd-dark side of the moon is the best selling album ever

the beatles-obviously

korn-although i only like the first album i do agree they were very important for the emerging sound of the late 90's, post grunge nu metal sound...

oh and i also dont think cold play have influenced a generation..though i do think that they are very good...i think radiohead were much more important and certainly influenced coldplay as they did so many other bands

how can you people even dare to compare sucky bands like linkin park and others to bands like these?

mow

Yeah I agree with you erokage, what I meant by this thread was bands that influnced , infulencing and ARE GOING to influnce in the many years to come, Coldplay is less that 10 years old but I see a bright future ahead of them

YEah NWA and Public Enemy made it all for rap, i take my hat of to them.

lests see a band ive missed, damn, you named all the bands i wanted to name Erokag!!!

1-Elliot Smith- if you havent heard anything by him, i suggest you run to the nearest cd store and listne to one of his albums. Beautiful lyrics accompined with sweet guitars. It sucks so badly that he died a year ago, and his new albnum just came out and ite really making me lament his passing away
2-Neil Young- lyrics at its best, your missing out if you havent heard anything by him.
3- JIMI HENDRIX - I cant believe nobody mentioned him yet! the god of electric guitar himself, every track is pure brilliance
4-

Frogzila
10-26-2004, 10:21 PM
Haha

1) Pixies - um, influenced Nirvana for one, so I guess that would make them more influencial. Also made "Debaser", the greatest song to ever have existed.
2) and if were talking about redifining music, you might want to add Chuck Berry, who sort of, um, started rock and roll. But you know, i mean, linkin park has come out with the same album like 20 times, and im pretty sure thats never happened before.

Radiohead radiohead, what can i say about my beloved radiohead

They have the best guitar sounds, regardless of the exmerimational music they add. I’ve haven’t heard guitar sounds like that in god knows how long. And Thom Yorke has an amazing voice. He has such depth of character and emotional strain. I adore Thom York, amazing song writer and his vocals ae extremely haunting, in some of his songs I feel like he has just entered a nigthmare and when he screams its as if he is speaking directly to my mind.
The guitarist and durmmer are wonderful and they have such talent and imagination

they transform rock into something youd never except could be made, trully remarkable in every aspect.

What cds I reccomend,
EVERY FUCKING ONE OF THEM, from their first arrival in "Pablo head" to the most infulencal cd in the past decade "ok Computer" to their lastest release of "Hail To the Thief". Every song will hit you right in your core and youll love every moment of it

My fav. songs:
Blowout, all of Ok Computer, Kid A (escpially A motion Picture soundtrack one of my fav songs of all time), Pyramid song, Polythene Part 1 and 2, 2+2=5, Sit down stand up,A wolf at the door ( the chorus is amaizngly smart)

NWA practically made gangsta rap, along with Public Enemy.

Public Enemy shouldnt be put in the same catagory. They were way beyond any other rap group of their time or anytime for that matter in terms of what they did with their ability. Public Enemy wanted to inspire a POSITIVE change, so I dont think they should be catagorized with gangsta rap. Basicaly, I just have to much respect for Chuck D to do that to him.

Also, sorry, but I think Linkin Park is a bunch of overindustrialized no talent ass clowns. They just got big cause they were the first group to combine a couple of the most popular genres. And boo to Metalica also. A bunch freakin retards. Sorry you all are entitled to your opinions, I just have trouble with those two bands being so well liked.

Moe you rock for mentioning Elliott Smith. The only thing I have against ES is that he stole my name and put an extra T on it. BASTARD.

My pick for bands: Radiohead- most emotionaly charged and genuinely moving frontman ever Nirvana- totaly saved the genre of Rock if only for half a decade or so, now it is back to being all comercialized again Beastie Boys - I totaly love them for being idiots even though they are intelligent and talented, they do what they love. I dont know if there is any other group ever who I felt enjoyed making music as much as them OH and Bob Marley of course
Indie Band: Self, Pavement, Wilco, and Spoon

I love Radiohead for many reasons to many to name them...
Favorite songs- The National Anthem and Bullet Proof... I Wish I Was (I just think that is the most badass song name ever).
If you like Radiohead give Flaming Lips and Rufus Wainwright a try.

NocturnalMe

Hmm...good ol' Radiohead. Saw them perform 4 or 5 years ago. I've been a fan since I heard the "Creep" single off of Pablo Honey. They've really been able to evolve from the sound they started with to keep up with experimental and non-traditional rock styles. I'd say The Bends was their best album and "Idioteque" is a minimalist masterpeice. UNKLE was great too (Thom Yorke trip-hop side-band).

Public Enemy shouldnt be put in the same catagory. They were way beyond any other rap group of their time or anytime for that matter in terms of what they did with their ability. Public Enemy wanted to inspire a POSITIVE change, so I dont think they should be catagorized with gangsta rap.

Ok I guess I should give Metalica credit for kind of being the Naruto of bands. They are a bunch of idiots, but they work really hard and are determined so they suceed anyway. Which I actually would really appreciate them for if they didnt get such huge heads from it.
I would take Deftones, System of a Down, or even Slipknot over Metalica any day.

ANd fuck yeah to Jeff Buckley and Bob Dylan. Another two greats.

Metallica are idiots, yes; they really want to be heavy metal, but they're not, but they seem to think that because they were sucsesful, they are. But putting that aside, their songs are great; or at least their old ones were. Metallica have become rubbish, but come on, they're not as bad as Slipknot.

Actually my best friend is totaly obsessed with Elliot Smith and he got me into him. At first, I wasnt too impressed by his music, but I thought his lyrics were great (even if they are a little disturbing). I think his later albums just got better and better compositionaly. I love the new I think it might be my favorite I thought it really showed his growth as a song writer. And although I am not a fan of commiting suicide (for much of the same reasons as Vash the Stampede), I must admit Elliott Smith did it in a really hardcore way (he freakin stabbed himself in the chest with a knife). Disturbing but hardcore nonetheless.

Linkin park is complete and utter crap, i cant believe people even mentioned them.
Also; Billy Idol, Madonna and Michael Jackson.

It may not count, but MTV has pretty much defined every genre there is :)

To the guy who dissed Metallica; Your need to move away. Eventough you dont like them you cannot say they have not had a BIG part in rock when they first started, the Black Album pretty much redefined rock as it was. Everything after that does suck.

Currently there are NO artists who are defining anything, they are just raping music as it is for the bigger part. These days music really sucks when you serieusly compare it to like the 80's and 70's

hah! I agree with you if you mean "no mainstream" artists are defining anything. Try Error, Federico Aubele or Madvillain. Rock has gone where it's gonna go. Electronic music, Punk and Hip Hop all have vast areas waiting to be explored and these artists are making way.

Streetlight Manifesto- A NJ ska band that plays a positive mention on life. I don't mean they're like preachy and crap, but just read some of their lyrics. They have three x-members of Catch-22.

Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes, and Rancid will always be awesome. I have to add The Pillows here with them. They all all have great lyrics, aswell as great instrumentals.

When it comes to rap, the only good artists that come to my mind are Tupac and Eminem. Granted Eminem's song aren't all good, but there a number of his songs that have great messages in them; politically and on the subject of personal issues.

Oh, and how did I manage to forget Billy Joel?

The Stooges - Come one guys, how come no one has mentioned Iggy and The Stooges. These guys helped pave the way for all most every type of alternative music that exists today. They were punks before punk rock. Check "Search and Destroy", "I Wanna Be Your Dog", "1970", "Gimme Danger" and tell me that these guys didn't set the stage for the "alternative explosion" that would not take place until way over a decade later.

David Bowie - If you don't know who he is there is no hope for you.

Public Enemy - They scared the hell out of white America with their eggy, hard hitting, political lyrics. Regardless of what you thought about their messages, chances are you felt it. "Fight the Power", "By The Time I Get To Arizona".

JEFF BUCKLEY

Agreed! ^_^ The good man immortalised Hallelujah. I love Leonard Cohen but only Jeff's voice could do full justice to that song. Only complaint I have is that twinge of disappointment that happens when you've heard all the records of an artiste dead and gone and wish there was more to keep you sated. I found relief in Ours - their vocalist Jimmy Gnecco sounds eerily like Buckley. So if any of you are avid Buckley fans, give them a listen.

And although I am not a fan of commiting suicide (for much of the same reasons as Vash the Stampede), I must admit Elliott Smith did it in a really hardcore way (he freakin stabbed himself in the chest with a knife). Disturbing but hardcore nonetheless.

You know the greatest irony? His father is (was?) a psychiatrist. I can't even imagine how heart-wrenching it feels to have all the theoretical knowledge in the world that would supposedly help your own son's depression, only to have it end that way. At least he left us with some beautiful records - let's hope he's in a better place :)

Radiohead this week eh? I had the pleasure of seeing Thom and crew earlier this year - I got the strangest fuzzy feeling in my stomach watching him tease us with his piano on You and Whose Army. I love that song so much and was over the moon when he played it ^_^ I like how they've evolved - the OK Computer-Kid A transition was brilliant.

Some groundbreaking artistes that come to mind:

Massive Attack - One of the pioneers of trip-hop and paved the way for Portishead, Sneaker Pimps etc.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Thanks to this qawwali legend, world music became cool. Kinna Sona still sends shivers up my spine.

U2 are great beacuse they were ordinary, real, passionate and mainted artistic control over their activities, not by being manufactured and packaged in accordance with current trends. I believe that gives many of us hope of achieving great things ourselves.

U2's music is a music of contrasts, from the darkness of Exit and Love Is Blindness to the light of Beautiful Day or Sweetest Thing, from the traditional (Van Diemen's Land, Running To Stand Still) to the contemporary (Elevation), from the wide open spaces (Where The Streets Have No Name) to the claustrophobic (Acrobat), from gospel (I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Rejoice) to the music of the Devil (The Fly).

when i listen to them i get goosebumps, somehting in bono's voice sends shivers down my spine, every song is a magical expreince in my opinion, they are original and the fact they are such strong activities makes me adore them even more.

oh man...i guees i like u2...but...i dont know why i have always had something i dont like about them...maybe its the fact that all their musics sound alike or the fact i really dont like them...there are a couple of songs i like to hear but it has to be old u2...this new u2 is hrrible..just utterly horrible..ever since "A Beautiful Day"that ive come to like them even less...and that awful tomb raider song...@_@.all and all they have been an important band...but just not one i appreciate.
