I'm looking to learn some more about this war going on. I'd prefer to have a nice mix of information and action/violence, like watching a (good) war movie will do for you. If you've ever watched the HBO miniseries "Generation Kill" (it's about the war in Iraq), then that's what I'm talking about - an educational frontline look at the war that's going on over there.

And if this is impossible, then just tell me your favorite nonfiction war book, if you would be so kind.

Generation Kill is also a book and they toned it down for television.

The Kite Runner follows the Afghan conflict to an extent, providing a little knowledge about how the Taliban came to power and the previous socio-political history and what it was all like for the people there. That said, it ends around 9/11 so if you're looking for something dedicated to the current conflict, or something where the war is the actual focus of the book -- then this won't be what you want.

It's a wonderful book though, so I'd read it anyway even if it doesn't fulfill the criteria you've set.

Actually, just actually read the post, so it doesn't fulfill your criteria.

Favourite war novel. Sebastian Faulks - Birdsong

Funny, that, my history teacher recommended Birdsong to the class.
