For me, tards are when you take an extremely devoted fan and remove both reason and accountability.

However, I'm not one of those who hates tards or their interests, merely because they exist. In fact, I find many of them entertaining. It's only when I'm confronted with the "Have my cake and eat it, too!!" type that I start to lose my patience.

To explain: Let's say that you have two people who are planning on ordering out. One person loves a particular type of dish beyond all reason or accountability; the other person doesn't like it. Now, there is a whole entire menu from which these two are ordering, so the second person figures that their friend can choose that horrible food they like and they can choose something else for themselves. But, unfortunately, the person who particularly loves that one entree will not stand for this (!).

Not only do they refuse to allow their friend to order something different from them, but they won't even let their friend abstain from eating entirely. They are getting that food they love and their friend is going to eat it and they are going to like it.

In other words, tards who can't stand others having a subjective opinion which differs from or conflicts with theirs to the point where they won't accept even the most factual arguments against their interest or bespeaking an ambivalent attitude, and they feel that any actions they take for their interest (whether they are hurtful, ridiculous, etc.) are fully justified in its defense.

Tards are those who are set in their ways and refuse to be swayed by logic. They cannot see things any way other than their own, and tend to become overly offended when others don't agree with them. Also, they tend to base their arguments on personal preferences and are extremely biased in one way or another to a specific character and/or pairing.

Tards are hard to define, really. It's a spectrum of behaviours. I'll see if I can define a few.

The "young" tard - Likely a kid from 10 - 13: They have trouble forming proper arguments, and like a character for no explicable reason. It could be as trite as something as green hair. Whatever they like is automatically the best, and that becomes their truth. Anyone who disagrees is wrong. They have no concept of opinion, or how it differs from fact, and because of their trouble in forming arguments, they fail to argue effectively often resorting to name calling, trying to attack the other members of the site with little quality ammunition.

The "smart" tard - The tard who, while can type much better and can form proper, logical opinions about things, still has a problem differentiating fact from opinion. They employ, though more effectively and humourously, the poster-abuse as seen within the behaviour of the "young" tard, attacking the poster using cyclical logic, and erroneous and often irrelevant truths, half-truths, and inferred truths*. Their zeal is great. They're probably the worst.

The "foreign" tard - Any age, lacking a decent grasp of the English language causing confusion, misinterpretation, and poor use. They are the only acceptable tard, given their forced handicap. Because of their inability to say anything that is in any way effective, they can't be argued or reasoned with. Doesn't really matter though, people don't take them seriously.

Others exist. I'm tired and drunk, and impressed I'm typing so well. A little more.

Definition: Inferred truth - We all come to understand certain ideas which are "true" within the manga, ideas while not directly said can be inferred from how one interprets the manga. This isn't something like "who's stronger than who", but something more literaturesque, having to do with the story, the plot, the characters, their backgrounds, what inspired their existance. I'd call it meta-reading. We look beyond what the kids look at. The "Tengu" theory is an example. It's plausible, but is has absolutely no relevance to the plot at hand. We find it interesting because we can see how one could develop such an idea. I've found that this can metastasize into something filthy, when people start to take something like this as truth.

Definition: Why would people underline the fact that while they like what the tard may like, they don't like the tard?

Answer: So as to not be associated with them. Have you ever justified an action that Sasuke had done that the Naruto Fandom went apeshit about? Well, it's called pulling a Switzerland. "Sure, we'll hold your Nazi gold, but fuck you if you think you're getting it back after the war, Herr Goebbles." What I mean is, while someone may agree with the position a fandom has taken, they want to make sure the people reading their opinion don't associate them with the idiocy, ridicule, and bias-alerts that come with believing what a fandom does.

In my opinion, joining a fandom eliminates your opinion from being important. You're admitting you have a bias, and thus won't be able to engage in a discussion properly because it's inevitable that it'll leak out. It'll likely fall apart because you, the person in the fandom, would fail to mention anything other than how "awesome Sauce is", and how "Itachi's the strongest character ever, always, and no one could ever beat him ever, in a million years, even though he's dead. Let's battledome to prove it", etc.

Two things: Joining a fandom doesn't make you a tard. Tards usually spawn in fandoms.
