Hi This is my first post so please don't be to harsh =) on my stupid ideas. Just say that they are stupid and why.
Okay so obviously it could have been but I'm not interested in various unlikely ways it could have been such as:
If Sasuke's father had a heart attack; or one of the elders had a stroke; a war started all of a sudden etc.
What we "know" is that:
Madara says the 3rd tried very hard to prevent it, but was unable to reach an acceptable truce... I assume this means for both the Uchihas and the Elders.
Personally I am actually kind of interested in how you would have stopped it if you'd been in the third's place. We know the third was extremely intelligent so it wasn't for lack of intelligence or trying but sometimes intelligent people can't find solutions that otherwise would be considered on their level, or below.(... like I'm sure most people here have had the experience of being able to solve a "hard" math problem but struggled with one that was supposedly easy.) Also the 3rd finding a solution would have totally voided most of the plot so we know he would be unable to for that reason.
I think one solution might have been for the 3rd to step down and appoint a new hokage. since he had already stepped down once before and that was due to age, so there is nothing preventing him from stepping down again when he was even older. Personally I think if the third had appointed Itachi to be the next Hokage, the Uchiha could not justify their reason for fighting. I know this might sound a little crazy on the following counts: Itachi was very young at the time of killing his clan (I think around 14ish but I might be off by a few years); the elders would never accept a uchiha, there were could have been more powerful jounin than Itachi at that age; and he would not have the public recognition of excellence that is probably required to a greater or lesser degree to become hokage.
However, conceding the point about the elders, the others are not as cut and dried as they appear above. Even though Kakashi outranked Itachi we know the latter was much more powerful due to their fight. So it might be assumed that there would be few, if any, jounin more powerful than Itachi even at that time.
(on a sidenote: Kakashi's generation seems sort of like the "lost generation" of the Naruto Universe in terms of power and ability)
Since there well may have been more powerful jounin, maybe Itachi couldn't be appointed immediately, but I am of the opinion that if the 3rd had agreed to publically support Itachi as Hokage after 2-3 years the Uchiha would have a hard time revolting under those conditions. Also that amount of time would probably have allowed him to surpass the rest of the jounin and gain a wider reputation (outside of ANBU & Uchiha). About the sannin, we know Jiraiya would not accept and Tsunade was no-where to be found.
Therefore Itachi could likely have been the most compelling choice at that point in time had the third chosen to step down.
Regarding the elders, even that is not totally out of the question. Convincing one of them may have been enough, and given that Itachi Uchiha was already working as a double agent for them they knew where his ultimate loyalties lay. Alternatively you (if you were Hokage) could probably just go around them by publically stating your preferred heir.
Even if some of the Uchiha had still planned to go ahead with the revolt, the clan probably would have turned on them as they "turned on" Madara.
I think two valid arguments against the above are that:
A) A great deal of Itachi's power came from training with Madara (e.g. use of the MS properly) and Madara would never train a person who was a likely sucessor to Hokage.
B) Politics :the Uchiha it seems had a bad public reputation after the nine-tails attack.
I personally think both of these could have been overcome since Itachi was a natural genius. Secondly if he had a few more years to undertake missions vital to Kohana the villagers might have respected him personally, if not uchiha.
So what would you have done in the third's position:
My scenario?
Something else?
Or do you think it would have been (practically) impossible to prevent with just diplomatic and political measures?
Thanks Everyone, I really am quite interested in what your ideas are! smile-big
