Details are emerging about a Chinese-developed “kill weapon” that potentially could target and destroy a U.S. aircraft carrier in a single strike.
The U.S. Naval Institute, a pro-military organization, notes that a post on a Chinese blog considered credible by military analysts provides a description of an anti-ship ballistic missile that could hit U.S. ships from about 1,240 miles.
A senior U.S. Navy official at the Pentagon confirmed to FOX News that such a weapon is a tangible threat from China, but it isn't a new threat. And the U.S. Navy has systems, such as the Aegis missile defense system, that can counter the threat posed by the Chinese missile.
The size of the missile, according to the U.S. Naval Institute, allows a warhead large enough to inflict significant damage on an American super carrier in a single strike, and it raises the chances of evading tracking systems and reaching its moving target unscathed in less than 12 minutes.
In recent months, the U.S. Navy's strategy has shifted toward improving the capabilities of its deep-sea fleet and developing anti-ballistic defenses, the U.S. Naval Institute reports.

I do believe they have to find the carrier first...

This thing is actually pretty nasty. It's basically just a DF-21 Medium-Range Ballistic Missile that can supposedly travel at nearly Mach 10, making it one of the fastest missiles around. Moreover the heavy payload the DF-21 can carry means it could very well sink even a Nimitz Class Supercarrier in 1 direct hit.

Overall if the details of the weapon are accurate, than this is the longest ranged, fastest, and largest Anti-Ship Missile ever. Even the Soviet Kh-22 (the first designated anti-carrier weapon) is dwarfed.
Currently the best defense the U.S. Navy has is the RIM-161 Standard Missile-3. It's meant to actually deal with ballistic missiles, while the conventional American point naval defense systems (Phalanx CWIS and RIM-116 RAM) would be rather insufficient to deal with something that moves this fast and at such a high trajectory. One does not want to underestimate this thing, especially since the Chinese have a pretty strong history when it comes to Anti-Ship missiles. Despite much of their weapons having been crap historically, the Silkworm and C-802 series of ASM's are both top notch and still a major threat to even the most modern warship today.
Of course the main problem here would be the accuracy of the weapon. In order to destroy the Carrier you'd need a direct hit, so this is the first time that the Chinese have ever dealt with a precision weapon in their ballistic missile inventory. Chinese ballistic missiles are notoriously inaccurate, so despite the impressive specs on this thing it may very well miss.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the United States and Israel have a joint R&D thing going on for an anti-ballistics/artillery laser? The name isn't coming to me atm and I'm too lazy to Google it today lol.
If that's the case, wouldn't the deployment of that working technology make this and any other sort of anti-ship missile completely useless anyway? I mean it's not like the United States and China are bound to go to war with each other any time soon anyway so we got time to finish it if it isn't ready... :huh.
Hell, what about that 400 pound laser that England made? Just take a few of those, supe up the juice and get some bigger mirrors and there you go. :pek

I agree that's happened with previous subjects here (especially the bigass China one). But to let you in on a little secret: a lot of the ranty shit I type is copy pasta from stuff I've previously made (on this forum or otherwise).
However my post in this thread was barely anything. Short and took less than a few minutes of writing, a quick google image search, and no research. I was proud of myself that it was kept short and wasn't rambling again. Then you have to come in and crush my dreams once more.

Though I am not mega I believe it can however the laser firing platform must be in the same area as the carrier and protected and what not, also the airborne laser is not carrier based so it will take some time before it can get into range to protect the battle group.

Eh do you mean the American YAL? I don't know of any other airborne systems.
But this is sort of out of the YAL's league. It's meant to deal with short-range ballistic missiles like the Izkander or Scud while this is thing is medium ranged. Moreover the sheer speed of this thing would make interception by a YAL very difficult given the fact it was designed for use against SRBM's, which are pretty slow.
Also Intercepting missiles is hard enough as it is, but having 1 moving target protect another moving target from something going mach 10 would be a nightmare to coordinate. My guess is we should wait for a carrier-based laser system.

It goes mach 10 because it's a ballistic missile, not a cruise missile like most anti-ship missiles. It rains down out of the stratosphere onto its target.

Oh well silly me Thanks for the info! To be honest I did not think Ballistic missiles were viable anti ship weapons, unless they had a nuclear warhead.

And?
It's funny now seeing that the only way they can really deal with our Navy is by means of a Ballistic missile, makes me feel even in a better position of power. And as far as I know, most ballistic missiles aren't accurate especially theirs, since eurasian military tech relies more on boom than accuracy. and are only effective because of their nuclear warheads in them.
And if the AEGIS can shoot down a satellite coming from the stratosphere, we currently have the upper hand.
But besides that, it's nice to see a bit of competition, gives us a goal in sight at least. :amuse

Hon, we couldn't hold onto a South Asian country that had 1/10th of China's populations and resources. What makes you think that we could ever hope to manage hegemony over China, espescially when the Soviet Union was right next door to China?

So they have a missile that could sink a U.S. carrier. But they won't because we owe them too much money.

And we can counter it and give them all lot've trouble for even trying; and what good would come out of trying to collect it if they aren't even an existing nation?
