New Series Said to Be Revealed in Gundam Ace Manga Mag

A new, as yet unnamed series to mark the 30th anniversary of the Gundam robot franchise will be reportedly announced in the April issue of Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Gundam Ace manga magazine on February 26. The series will feature the RX-78-7 mobile suit — one of the last mecha in the RX-78 line, and a mecha that has appeared in Gundam reference material in the past but not as a main mecha in a series. (The model number of the main mecha of the first Gundam series is RX-78-2.) Veteran designer Hajime Katoki (Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Mobile Suit Victory Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: The Hidden One Year War) designed the new mecha.

Tatsuya Suzuki (Gaogaigar, The Legend of Reyon, Aniyome wa Ijippari) designed the new characters. The story will star Hugues Couraud, a 32-year-old officer in command of the Earth Federation's Phantom Sweep Team. The special operations unit is ordered to hunt down the remnants of the losing Zeon forces after the end of the One Year War of the first Gundam series. When he was young, he once had his entire unit wiped out.

The other main character from the Phantom Sweep Team is a 24-year-old woman named Sherry Allison. She was a test pilot for prototype units, but she has been assigned to the special operations team to fill its ranks. On the opposing Zeon side is Eric Blanke, a 20-year-old male officer born to a prominent family in the Principality of Zeon. He is leading the counteroffensive unit named Invincible Knights to avenge the Zeons' loss to the Earth Federation.

The story is set in 0081 of the Universal Calendar, one year after end of the One Year War. While peace and order is being restored to the world, small-scale battles still crop up here and there due to Zeon remnants continuing to offer resistance. A veteran Earth Federation officer assigned to mopping up the remaining Zeon forces, and a young officer executing a top secret operation to revive the Zeons, cross paths on this new battlefield.

Glad to see they are going back to the REAL Gundam Universe.
The Alternate series have been 50/50. Some Good and Some Horrible.
Let's go back to normal Gundam. With out the over powerful Mechas, The I need a love interest to move the plot, Series controlled by The Fan character polls.

nice, i like that they are going back to UC but i'm a little concerned with the time-line...aren't they kinda squeezing this series into an era thats already saturated with storylines from the One Year War?

or is this gonna be a mini-series like 0080, 8th MS team and 0083? (cuz those were awesome despite being only a handful of eps)

oh well, i'll watch either way since their doesn't seem to be any hormonal teens or forced sponsor romances in sight...yet.

I had been hoping for a full 52 ep series set within the time period following Char's Counter attack though.

doubtful if its a mini series...

and besides, UC is the home turf of the Original "masked Rival"...i doubt they would bastardize Char's standing for the 3oth anniversary.

Looks promising. I love the original Gundam time line. My favorite Gundam show was 08th MS Team. I like the idea that a child isn't piloting the suit as well.

Honestly, I'm not at all shocked about yet-another-UC-work being made.

It's what they did for the 5th Anniversary (announcement of Zeta Gundam).
And for Gundam's 10th Anniversary (CCA, 0080 being announced).
And the 20th Anniversary (08th MS Team's movie, Turn-A Gundam (which has a heavy UC influence), G-Saviour, Mission to the Rise).
And the 25th Anniversary (Igloo).

The trilogy of 0079 movies will pretty much be all you'll need for this, yeah. Luckily, they're easy to find.

Nice pics. I love the fact that the art style is close to the original, but with a more modern look to it. I look forward to UC goodness, even though I've only watched Char's counterattack.
The designs remind me of the redrawn scenes in the Zeta compilation film.

I just hope the level of quality is film-like. Surely the DVD and Blue-Ray sales of G00 and Geass should give Sunrise the needed budget to produce high quality art in every episode. :zaru

UC-Universal Century.The very first universe of Gundam.Its also the biggest one as it has more series,OVAs and movies than any other universe.Itsalso the MAIN universe,since new ones were created as Alternative Universes.

...and those people should be drug out into the street and shot, seeing how all the animated works (and those that are endorsed by Sunrise, but are not animated) are official. And the definition of Sunrise's use of 'official' is exactly the same as our use of 'canon.'

Sounds nice, gives me an excuse to watch the rest of the UC works, even if It's not necessary. Still I would have loved to see something new or another universe being expanded upon.

amen, that Gundam has one of the highest concentration of epic characters of any series so far...you got Treize, Zechs, Wu Fei, Hiro just off the top of my head. It definetly deserved a sequel, instead it got a so so movie with some loli as the final villain :pek

truly this is an unjust world when shit like Seed Destiny gets aired and Wing goes unappreciated :quite

anyway...is there any word on the number of eps? is it gonna be full length or not?

But seed destiny was fail because that fool shinn kept fighting against Kira and Athrun, Destiny should've included a new enemy one so tough that Kira and Athrun would need the help of Shinn, a new up and coming pilot, instead it was the same old Kira and Athrun are gods, and no one can beat them.

Yeah, it's just a repainted kit of Hi-Nu (and a subtle redesign on the wing binders), rather than anything close to the RX-78-7.

While I would have wanted something new, a return to UC to celebrate Gundam's 30th Anniversary is nice.

So glad to see not only the Earth Federation uniforms, but the Zeon uniforms as well. Artwork looks fantastic as well, as we haven't seen a UC series in eons.

Looking forward to the new series, and tbh, we should've gotten wind of it years ago. Such an anniversary mustn't be ignored, as we all thought it would be.

That's a surprise, got my hopes up slightly.

And Wesley I don't think people were that interested in researching more about it, well I wasn't at least, inactive thread.

But something isn't right, to mark the 30th anniversary of Gundam, we're getting a game instead of an anime series? That doesn't really make sense, is anyone certain an anime isn't being made along with it?

Actually, according to my friends who know Japanese, it's a game to accompany the OVA series. The game is going onto the PS3, and will be including the mecha seen in the OVA series.
Pretty simple, really.

The real question is... can this game rival Federation vs Zeon or Gundam versus Zeta Gundam as far as games go? :ho

Incredibly doubtful. The Gundam games not made with the Vs or Musou engines have been slowly dipping in quality for a long time now.

And there's been some clarification as to what this project actually is:
1) A PS3 game, with animated cutscenes.
2) A manga version of the PS3 game, also being a sidestory to some extent.
3) A 30-minute-OVA that is involved with the 0081 PS3 game somehow.

And that's all we know for this work. If there's anything else, expect it to be announced over the summer and into the fall.

Operation Troy on 360 was pretty good actually. Of course, 80% of the world never got to play it...
