The tanks versus zakus fight was badass as hell:lmao

I'm surprised the driver survived though. I suppose he'll be the driver for the guntank next episode.

Still one of the best deaths ever in the "disturbing and scary" category. The treat of the death are Yandells reactions. He was wildly, histerically celebrating his victory over the enemy he was so obssesed about,he was so damn happy that his life would no longer be cursed he was madly happy,he was drugged by his victory over the Death God.And then,in a split second, his triumph turns into horror!Terrible horror,he is like "No,this isnt happening!".It isnt like Barberry,he had time to get used to the idea that he is doomed, more than that,he was never all that happy with his victory either, for he was once again charged with the burden of being the only survivor.Meanwhile,Yandell was experiencing crazy sense of the most majestic triumph ever and then BANG.At first I too thought that death was random...but then I processed how Yandell felt and changed my opinion.

Poor Yandell, screw Zeon infantry, never liked them anyway.Their too uncool compared to everything else Zeon.

Here's some thoughts and a summary I popped up on another board. I've put it into spoilers because... well... it's also got a summary.

Well, episode 2 has finally been released, so I figure I should update this topic for the hell of it. Yay.

The date: July 0079
The place: Europe. France. The Straight of Dover... about where D-Day was.
Our Focuses: Sergant Rayburn Suart, Type 61 Tank driver, and Lt. Herman Yandell, Type 61 Tank gunner.

Well... my hopes for Igloo fell pretty quickly with that last episode, so maybe this one won't be that bad... or at least be as mediocre as the last one. Our adventure starts out with a ruined tank and a pilot laying in it. He sees a white Zaku coming towards him, and the pilot proclaims it a 'Death God' and names it 'the White Ogre.' Oh, goodie.
We then jump to a quick little summary of what's been happening on the Earth: Zeon invading and the Federation being pushed back, you get the idea. During this, we get a rather nice little 'Zeon Invasion' battle, with Mobile Suits coming out of the sky. Unfortunately... the Zaku units seem to move like Doan's Zaku: like humans wearing bulky clothes. However, the tanks and humans move well enough that it really doesn't matter that much. It's a large battle, and this is honestly what we should be getting for our money: bigass battles that we don't see onscreen.
Depressingly, we then cut to a new rookie-type Feddie walking up to a group of Type 61 tanks and their pilots, looking for his new assignment. In traditional Igloo style, the entire group of people he talks to are royal assholes and then proclaim the new guy's partner, a Lt. Yandell, is cursed by a Death God. Of course, going with the fact that our Igloo castmembers are idiots, our rookie nearly swallows his tongue.

Walking over to Yandell's Type 61, our Feddie Focus fangasms over the tank design, and then introduces himself to the gunner as Sergant Rayburn Suart (though, honestly, something tells me his name should be 'Stuart' and not 'Suart'). As Suart climbs into the tank, there's a scene about how the tank doesn't have a stalled engine... but is actually testing the newbie. The scene is a little odd, but it actually makes some sense in a vague context.
As the episode moves on, it turns out the area and subsequent battle are actually just a gigantic combat range for practice. It's kinda odd seeing them use paint rounds being fired out of freaking tanks, but I guess it works.
After the test battle ends, we finally get to see Lt. (Herman) Yandell without the tank in the way. As it turns out, he's pretty heavily scarred and has a false leg (which we know because it creeks incessantly). He insults Suart for trying to talk, claiming "I don't hang with people who fight with their words." Again, Suart tries to swallow his tongue.
A flashback shows us that Yandell was the random guy at the opening of the episode, and that the white Zaku tormented his broken tank, essentially crushing it with the unit's foot. Or maybe it's the predecessor for Suart, the episode isn't 100% clear. We get more comments about a Death God and how Yandell would like to see what one looks like.

Cut ahead about a week or so, and we see a fleet of Type 61 tanks ready for battle. The enemy is said to be coming from pretty much all sides except the ocean, and will be trying to push them off into the ocean, so to speak, and off the mainland of Europe. Supposedly, the enemy Zakus will be off in a diversion off near Spain, rather than at the battle. This, of course, means the Zakus will show up at the worst possible time and blow shit up.
As the tanks march off into battle, Yandell orders his men to stop... because his Type 61 just stalled. Because it's apparently unhappy to be not fighting against mobile suits. Some repairmen make fun of the tank, so Suart tries to beat the crap out of them - only to be distracted when Yandell says that he only wants to beat the 'White Ogre' from earlier.
...and then a random female voice pops up, proclaiming that "I want to see your revenge." Oh, and it turns out that Yandell is possessed by that female voice, which essentially means he's possessed by... um... that woman who tormented Barberry from last episode. But not in a fun 'Exorcist' way. In a 'I say the same things she does' way. Oi.

Cut away to the main battle, and we see the forces of Zeon retreating, and the head of the Tank forces exclaims they'll pay the Zeon back twofold... and then a Zaku shows up, shooting down the lead tanks.
...and then the episode randomly jumps to a Zeon Newsreel. Like, those old news bits shown before movies during WWII. I swear, I am not making this up. The newsreel proclaims they've liberated most of Europe, and that they've forced the Federation off the mainland. Also, Captain Elmer Snell, pilot of the White Ogre, has been made famous again from his victory. Of course, Yandell's pissed as he watches this. I'm more wondering how both a random Feddie guy and a Zeon pilot decided on the same name without talking to one another.

A fade to black later, and we see Suart talking to a higher-up officer, confessing that he's worried that Yandell is turning this war into a personal vendetta. The higher-up basically says 'shut up, I'm not listening to you.' And during all of this, creaky-leg Yandell somehow manages to sneak up behind the poor rookie-guy. Yandell and the higher up have a brief talk about a plan being executed, and Suart again tries to swallow his tongue - though this time with actual reason to do so: Yandell and his batallion are going to fight the enemy tonight. So, our two mains go off to di... fight.
As we wait for the battle, we see the Zeon forces moving off to fight... and the White Ogre (you know, Snell) somehow gets a premonition that he's going into a trap. Which he is. And he finds it important to mention that he's French. Snell's Zaku 'dies' and he seems to make the same excuses as Yarnell does: it doesn't want to fight. Or something.

As they wait for battle, Yandrell and Suart share a moment as they look over the battlefield from earlier. Suart makes a comment about how everyone thinks about their loved ones as they die... and Yandrell attacks Suart, accusing the guy of having seen 'the death god on his back.' We get a few flashbacks, and so now we actually know why Suart was trying to swallow his tongue: he saw the random ghost from episode 1. Still doesn't make the scenes any less odd, but hey. So Surat replies with "Yes, I could see it! It's the Death God of Zeon!" Honestly, I don't quite get the point of this anymore. Isn't this supposed to be about fighting the Zeon and not a ghost story?
Cut back over to the White Ogre, who's heading to the same location, and he's thinking the same things - declaring that his 'worthy opponent' has been possessed by 'the death god of gravity.' A few minutes later, our battle is joined: three Zaku units vs 8 tanks.

The battle itself is pretty enjoyable, and eventually it's down to a one-on-one: our focus pair's Type 61 vs the White Ogre. Unfortunately... let's just say I won't spoil the ending, but you probably already know what's gonna happen.

HOWEVER, we do have a preview for the next episode:
The battle of Odessa.
With prototype Guntanks.
I might just enjoy that one...

------------

The Good:
---The quality of CGI has improved somewhat. The detail is the same, but the tanks and characters seem to actually be pulled by the gravity of the Earth and not just glide along the surface. Also, the detail of the characters is better, even if they're all still pretty damned ugly.
---The final battle looks really pretty, and finally has the Zaku units moving as if they belong there, not like fancy gunpla.
---An explanation for that damned FF7 reject from last time.

The Meh:
---Randomly, the episode flashes to a grainy black and white format, slowing down the action intensely. I wish I could find a justification for this in the episodes, however, outside it being this episode's answer to Bullet Time.

The Bad:
---Zakus NOT in the final combat scene move like they're men in rubber suits. Slow men in rubber suits designed after Gunpla.
---The Federation continue to be dicks. But at least Zeon's portrayed the same way.
---Death God blather. I get that soldiers are superstitious, but even the most insane soldier can go three minutes without mentioning one!
---The fact that the theme tying these episodes together just isn't that interesting.

Final thought:
Why doesn't the director go make Bleach if he loves 'Death Gods' so much?
