Bleach: The Musical

Not exactly new, er, news, but it hasn't been posted here before so...

For those too lazy to click the link, here's the report:

Bleach Musical = Much Corn + Gotei 13 Live Dancing Show

So we went, we saw, and we laughed our ass off. Opening night of the Bleach musical, arriving to the merchandise-filled lobby of Space Zero in Shinjuku at about 6:30pm. After giving up some money to the god that is Animate (Bleach 2006 calendar, program, pictures of cast), we went in to our seats and waited with baited breath for the show to start.


The corn started ASAP. They basically went through the whole story cutting out all the characters that were not in the cast. The first act was ALL CORN. Urahara stole the show with his rakugo recap of all the background just IN CASE there was someone in the audience who did NOT know what Bleach was about. (Granted I did see an elderly lady in a back row.)

The real reason all 480 of us in the audience came to see the show started in the 2nd Act when the 4 captains + Renji and a few extras, did their Gotei 13 synchronized dancing. With swords. Yes, Byakuya danced... with a sword. Urahara started the 2nd Act by coming into the audience to promote the program pamphlet(as if there was someone who did NOT buy the thing). He was very hot and soooo cute.... and funny.... and oh, stop the drool

Then EVERYONE boogied! Singing, and dancing in SYNC. Better than the Backstreet Boys. I will NEVAAAH forget Renji rapping and dancing (even though he did miss a few steps, it was the opening night, forgivable). My friend claims that the captain’s hakamas are good to boogie in. They flap well.

Things I will never forget:
1) Boogie-ing Renji, rapping, dancing and missing a few steps, but poor guy has only done this once in front of a full audience.

2) Total AWE at how they did Hitsugaya's wig!!! THAT THING IS CEMENT!!! And it is perfection.

3) 4 captains + Renji, dancing in sync with the extras.

4) Swords change by... um... smoke coming out from the metal rafts, you stick the old sword in and pull out the new one.

5) During the first act, the captains were all sitting through the flashbacks, posing motioness on the left side of the stage (in front of us) and I will never forget Renji pulling the "cement" telephone pole off the side-stage to pass it back into the backstage.

6) Hitsugaya grabbing Renji's crotch during the final song where they all line up like a cast intro. (I don't think he'll do that every show though)


Anyhow, it was the most HILARIOUS and the most squeal-inducing experience this side of Soul Society.

The DVD for the musical will go on sale at Animate later this year (or next year) for over 7000 yen (bout $70 USD?) and I HIGHLY recommend this corn for consumption.

Some news about it:

Speaking of the Bleach musical (there's a poster in Revolution), the show is opening again in spring. Dates are 1/5~8 in Osaka, and 1/14~19 in Tokyo. They've added (or replaced?) a cast member--Kitamura Eiki will perform as Kira Izuru. New scenes and songs will also be added to the show.

Odd, but it just seems funny. I guess it was good they didn't try to make it seriously at all, because that would have been a miserable failure, but a funny Bleach musical..I'd definately go. Too bad the DVD's so damn expensive, or I'd buy it.

Byakuya, Aizen, Renji and Orihime looked fine to me. I think the worst is Ichimaru Gin. They could have at least found someone with smaller eyes...

The guy who is playing as Renji, I'm amazed at how he was able to do Renji's hair. The guy playing as Gin looks odd because he needs to close his eyes, then he'll probably look like Gin.

Gin's eyes are too big, obviously, and not happy-looking enough.

Rukia looks kind of manly yeah, but I think she does resemble the anime character a decent bit.

As far as the rest of them, yes, Byakuya looks a little young, but matches the part perfectly otherwise. Kisuke looks perfect, and the rest of them match very well....except for Gin. Looks noooothing like Gin. Possibly because it is indeed impossible to do what he does with his eyes closed. Seriously. It doesn't work.

This is actually the second Bleach musical.

The first one showed in August of last year -- I just saw it a few days ago -- and even though I'm a n00b for Bleach, I thought it was pretty good. Of course, it's not going to go exactly like the manga/anime goes; they cut out a few things from the story for timing and aesthetic purposes, but overall the performances were really good.

The actress for Rukia, however, does NOT look like a man at all. And she has a beautiful voice, which is another reason why they hired her. If she had a voice like the actress for Orihime, it just wouldn't work.

Not that I'm bashing her. Orihime's actress is adorable and fitting for her role and has a great voice, but not one that would be acceptable for a character like Rukia. I think they were all cast wonderfully, so really, no complaints there.

Oh, and to add to that... The actress for Orihime... is not as well-endowed as the she is in the manga/anime. :sweatdrop

Ichimaru DOES smile and put up a good performance. His voice is lovely and he pulls off that scary/smiley/evil thing perfectly.

Hitsugaya~ Yeah, he's a little tall, but when you see him in action, it just works. They can't exactly have a teenager (or a girl) playing him... so he was a good choice. He's got a sweet voice, too, so I'm very much in love with him.

Renji puts up one hell of a performance, as do the rest of them... but his performance, as well as Momo... really blew me away.

I don't want to write an entire novel about them, but in my opinion, everyone in the musical is also very good, performance-wise, and the acting/singing/dancing and such were all great.

Of course, I probably like it so much because I'm one of those dorks who love musicals in general and will break out in song and dance in the middle of the grocery store for no apparent reason.

It's official: Bleach has been made into a live action rock musical. Anybody seen it besides me?

And if you feel like reading a brief summary of my two cents worth (I've seen the entire musical three times, it's that funny)...

Some highlights:
-Byakuya is short. Hitsugaya's taller than him.
-Aizen doesn't blink when he sings (creepy!)
-Renji is...so so ugly...very disappointing, considering how hot he is in the show)
-wtf, no Ishida!?
-Hitsugaya's actor is determined to be as sexy as possible at any given moment, like it's his first time on stage and he wants to make it big as a teen pop sensation
-The special effects are awesome; I love how Byakuya's flash step took fifteen seconds (no joke) to do (the lights went out as he walked across the stage, and went back on when he got to the end)
-Everybody has their own theme song
-Be sure to check out the captain's individual dance numbers!
-And if you dl the musical, be sure to watch the backstage extras...they're even better than the musical itself

I liked it a lot ^^ Well, I've seen clips of the first one, and downloaded the second... I think the second one, 'Saien', was a lot better. The singing, dancing, and the whole of it improved a lot. I like it, it's very well done. ^^

And they're doing a third one, that will start in August. This time, they're continuing the storyline, with new characters (Zaraki, Ikkaku, Hanataro, Yoruichi and Matsumoto).

I liked all of the musicals okay until the most recent one. They really messed up the story.

The actress that played Rangiku became pregnant, so she was unable to pick her role up in the most recent musical. Unfortunately, Rangiku's scene when Gin leaves SS with Aizen had to be rewritten, and Soifon was the one to grab Gin instead. I also hear the music just wasn't as good. I'm just really mad that they wrote out Rangiku like that.

They're aren't going to be anymore musicals after this last one, too. I'm kinda happy and sad at the same time. T-T I wanted Yumichika to be in the musical so bad.

They... are an acquired taste, I guess. The first time I saw it I was also like, "wtf no not my beloved characters!," and upset at them being camped up like that, but once you see how darn seriously the actors take their roles, it begins to grow on you. (Plus if you're fans of pairings like IchiRuki, HitsuHina, and GinRan, there are plenty of songs there to squee over... :P)

It seems like theme musicals are part of anime franchises in Japan anyway, so the Japanese fans aren't as weirded out as we are. :)

Oh lawd, it's hilarious. Even better than the Sailor Moon one. I love the bit where Hitsugaya pops out of a trap door. Shame Shunsui wasn't in it though, I like him. :(
Also, Renji and Byakuya's voices are probably the best. The guy who plays Aizen is pretty good too.
