i like paperbacks coz they're cheaper and certainly lighter. It's not advicable but I read lying down on my bed so hardcovers and too heavy to hold up. I had a hardcover fall on my face once and i gave me a black eye no kidding. LOL

Nybarius

Paperback, easier to mangle.

Nakor

i guess i prefer hardcovers. don't know why. maybe it's cause they keep better. like paperbacks tend to get folded and creased. also hardcovers look nicer.

zionforsell
08-01-2005, 03:59 AM
It depends. Like when you go somewhere and want to carry something to read, then a paper back. To me, I buy paper back first. Then if I found out it was an extraordinary book which I won't get bored, I will buy it in hardcover to keep it. All of my classics and alltimefavorite are in hardcovers. But the nonchalant fictions or romance books??? Paperback. Used one sometimes to test.

DragonHeart52
08-01-2005, 11:13 AM
Given the price of hardcover, I will usually buy paperback. If it's a book that I know I'll be keeping as part of an important collection, I will purchase it in hardcover, but usually only if I can find a bargain. Pretty much like zionforsell above.

I prefer paperback, except for the Harry Potter books. All my HP books are hardcover and I prefer it that way.

Hardcovers seem prettier but I sitll find paperbacks more versatile, they can bend...and twist...and...um.

edit: oh right, they're lighter

well if its a small book like 200-300 pages paperback is good but if its like 700 pages i prefer hardback

08-02-2005, 10:17 PM
it depends really for me, if its part of a set and i buy a hardcover for the first one i go hard cover all the way, same with paper back. though most of them end up being papaer back.

TheBlindHyuuga
08-02-2005, 10:38 PM
Mostly paperback because they are easier, cheaper, and I wouldn't mind them being stained. I also like to make creases in the spine of the book by folding it...can't do that with hardback.

ShadowGal19
08-04-2005, 08:00 PM
I prefer paperback because they're less expensive, though I must admit I buy quite a few hardcover books because a certain someone in my house sometimes destroys the paperbacks.

MurasakiNeko
08-07-2005, 03:14 PM
I buy Hardbound books when I have cash to spare
but usually when I'm in a bit of a bind financially I tend to buy the Paperback ones...
so I guess like both Hardbounds and Paperbacks equally ^ ^

Usually paperback - then I can buy more books for the same cost - but hardcover if I really like the book, or I don't have the patience to wait for it to come out in paperback.

Kaede
08-22-2005, 01:21 PM
Well... Hardback comes out sooner, looks nicer but is heavier... Paperback Is lighter, cheaper, but you have to wait... So... Depends I guess...

08-25-2005, 08:32 PM
HARDCOVER FOR HARDCORE READING! YES! AND if it's hardcover, you can punch it... how rad is that? And also, if it is hardcover, it can act as a secondary weapon! Like if a plane was being hijacked and you had brought along Harry Potter, you could clock them and be national hero - thanks to hardbacks!

Paperback can be more convient, though - especially for textbooks.

Dragonzair
08-27-2005, 08:12 PM
it depends really.
If it's books like, Harry Potter, LOTR, or books that are important to me, then its hard cover.
But mystery books or stuff which i read every where would have to be paperback...

well, books that I don't care about are all in Paperbacks and series that I love are all in Hardback, like Harry Potter, Roal Dahl's collection, Wayside school series and Series of Unfortunate events are all in hardback

Ah same I too read lying down on by bed. It hurts my arm if I hold up a hardcover for long periods of time so I prefer paperbacks.

I never dropped them on my face though.:amuse

Paperback books are much cheaper and easier to hold while reading, not to mention easier to transport. That and I don't mind wrecking up a paperback from over use as much as I mind destroying hardcover books.

I prefer hardcover. If I'm getting a book just to read for school or something, then I'll get paperback cuz it's cheaper. But if I'm buying a book I want to keep, I buy the hardcover because it looks nicer and lasts longer since it doesn't damage as easily.

11-14-2005, 12:13 AM
have to say paperbacks (though if it has pages, regardless of the type of cover, i'll read it just fine) (check that: not if they're math books... o_O)
why? more portable (trying to carry a hardcover in my purse has threatened to kill the poor thing), easier to hold up (i usually lay on by back, or read with my arm raised above my head. found out that you can't write like that... the pen's ink won't run upwards), and, most importantly of all.... cheaper. yup. buying three books for the price of one.

Paperback for me. The only hardbacks I read are Harry Potter and I get annoyed having to hold the book with two hands xD But, like a lot of people said, paperbacks are cheaper. I lost quite a few of my precious books from Hurricane Wilma (house got 4˝ inches of water) and I'm glad they were all paperback. Less money to spend on new copies.

Growing up with a family library of over three thousand books in my basement (I got bored when I was nine...And I counted them...I should do another count. We've run out of shelves and shelf space.) and as a librarian's daughter, I have learned the value of both paperback and hardback books.

I like hardback better, just because they last longer. Also, I like the way they feel. And since I'm in a book family, I get spoiled with books. To the max. If I want a book, I generally get it. No matter how expensive it is. I love it. :P

yummysasuke
11-26-2005, 08:34 AM
I don't really mind. But I find that hardcovers look better on the shelf and easier to read on a desk, while the paperback is easier to read in bed...and as i read more in bed, I would prefer paperback slightly over hardcovers

voted for paperback. It's cheaper, more 'portable' and lighter.

Not like a don't like hardcover. But it's to expensive usually (lately I'm buying books only in second-hand bookshops). I woud like to have my beloved books in hardcover but for now i have to spent money for things as fancy as food :)

But if it's for a present it's only hardcover.

Paperback it is then.

It depends, If i consider them "collectors items" such as a series of books that I have an affinity for, i'd get the hardcovers. If it is just general reading books or books that I might buy one of a series, I'd get the paperback.

I'm really anal about my books (and electronic equipment actually), if there is a crease anywhere, I go crazy. Hardcovers are more durable.

To me, hardback makes it feel like a real book, something more gritty and exciting. When you open the hard book and it somewhat creaks, it feels like the story is more tangible, more real. The extra weight of the book adds to the weight of the story I feel.

HOOfan_1
03-22-2007, 11:41 AM
either really. A paperback is alot easier to hold especially if you are laying down. Hardbacks are easier to keep nice, but I have some paperbacks that I have read 3 or 4 times and they are pretty much mint, the only problem with paperbacks is they use cheaper paper and it tends to discolor over time. But I often like the Hardbacks for the cover art and just the overall appearance, for instance I am trying to collect all of the Dune prequel books in hardback, even though I have some in paperback.

Paperback books are much better for a number of reasons
1.They're 50% cheaper. For one book it's not that big of a deal, but if you're a mega collector, with thousands of books, we're talking saving 15 to 20 thousand dollars.
2.Hardcover books are about 15% wider. Again if you're a collector with thousands of books, thinner is better, because you have more space.
3.They are extremely difficult to read. When they weigh 15% more, they are more difficult to read, because they're heavier. It's much easier to read paperback books.
4.They're difficult to carry. If you're moving, you have to carry a lot more weight with hardcover books. Even a couple of pounds extra can be annoying.

That's my 2 cents.

01-25-2009, 04:05 PM
I like both. Paperbacks are lighter and easier to store and such, but the hard covers are more durable and good for dropping on peoples heads. I usually wont wait for something to come out in paperback, though. If it's already out in paperback, I'll get it, but if the next one in a series is going to be hardcover, I'll shell out the extra cash and just get the hardcover. I like knowing were in a series I caught up, the hardcovers usually make that easier.

Although I like both, personally I favor paperbacks a bit more because they are easier to manage, much more convenient to use and cheaper at that. I can take them on the go and they're more versatile too. Other than that, the only time I ever buy hardbacks is if it's an important or special book, such as one that completes a series or a favorite of mine.

Although paperbacks are definitely needed if I want to read when I'm travelling or anywhere other than my house really. :sag

Hardcover... Unless they have those weird plastic coverings on them... Those get in the way while reading.

hardcover, especially for shelving purposes. Paperbacks are cheaper, but these days I buy more books online thus the cost between them isn't all that much anymore. Plus another good thing about hardcover is that they hold up better for when I lend my books out. I'm a stickler for only creasing my paper backs as much as necessary but recently I lent one of my paperbooks out just to witness my friend bend the cover all the way around the book while she was reading. You can imagine my shock and dismay, and horror really :sweatdrop. It's a lot harder for someone to destroy a hardback book.

Hardback obviously has a long shelf-life, but I don't mind paperback either ... as long as I get to read the book, I'm happy.

When I read, I love to curl up and get into a book. I feel like paperbacks let me bend them so I can get comfortable with them.

Paperback for the most part. They're just easier to deal with and cheaper overall. Will go for hardcover occasionally if I'm too impatient to wait for a book but that's pretty rare in most instances. Or if they're from a used bookstore. Otherwise, paperback. <3

I normally buy paperback for a book which has been out for a while that I want to read, and if I really like it I'll get the hardcover version and file it in the home library.

I prefere Hard cover..though most of my books are paperback....

they are cheaper and easier to read ..like while in bed or on the bus or so..

but the feeling of reading/touching a hardcover is way better for me^^:hurr

I like both for different reasons.

Paperback is the best for something I'm going to constantly be reading though.

Depends on the book.

If it's not in at the library, typically I buy paperback (if it's available in paperback at that time). If I like the book enough to hold onto it I generally go buy hardcover. Sometimes I can find used hardcover books in great shape for nothing...the paper then becomes a donor book (friends, library, or I sell it to the bookstore).

Typically, hardcover books hold up better. But as many have stated - paperback travels well.

Usually hardcover. I hate leaveing creases so easily in the paperback books. But I really need uniformity. I really hate it when a series is half paperback and half hardcover.

hardcover. paperbacks are too easily 'messed up'

Paperbacks ususally. Cheaper and easier.

But when I want a book that has just come out and it's in hardback, I'll buy it. Like the final 3 Harry Potter books (Order of the Pheonix, Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows) I got them the day after they all came out.

I prefer paperback. They don't weigh much, they are cheap and easy to hold. Also, they are smaller so they fit in your bag better. They are always easier to handle and bring with you on the buss and stuff.

Hardbacks look good and all, but I prefer paperbacks. I mostly read on the go (like on the bus) so I like something that I can carry easily.

It kind of depends on whether or not I'm traveling in a car or on a plane or something. If I am, I'll probably keep paperbacks with me.

But I prefer hardcovers in general. They're more durable, and I love the way they feel in my hands and smell when I open them to read, especially the pages. I mean, yeah, I'll get paperbacks more often than hardcover, but if I see a book I've just been dying to get, I'm more than willing to spend the extra money because I know I'm going to keep it and read it for a long time, you know?

As bad as this sounds, Paper back, because I bend the cover back and around, so its easier to hold when I'm lying in bed.

Hardcovers. I try to take good care of my stuff, so I want something that is safer from damage.
