That topic must have made you curious?? :amuse
Any-hooh.
I've been writing on a book for about 2 years now and i'm nearing the act of actually starting to write the book itself .. whaaat have i been writing up until now??
I have a smacked note-pad under my bed with the facts i need to keep true to the story.. think of it as a manual/encyclopedia thing where i can go back and check my facts... since this book is about a world i've created.. the info can get to my head sometimes ..
On to the question.. i have 1 village left that needs a name.. anybody got any good suggestions for a fictional name for a village? :oh

Umm...first I'll ask. What kind of world does this take place in?
And what kind of village is it?

What's the village like? What real world cultures does the fictional culture have similarilties to? What are common names for the villagers?
I could never think of good names when I tried writing. I usually just called things Village1 or Character3, and then I kept an index of which characters and villages corresponded with each number. Whenever I finally thought of a fitting name, I'd sub it in.

Fair enough :)
The book is mainly based on the fantasy genre, with a strong hint of sci-fi.. the village that needs a name is just a typical small village with little or nothing that seperates it from the various other villages i've created .. the story takes place in this particular village because the main characters are looking for a induvidual there.. nothing else for now :amuse
It might be a fishing village, since i've placed it near the ocean ..

These are Japanese languages you're using? That's kinda why i have to tilt them a bit since the world i'm creating doesn't contain any asians :)
But i've taken notes of your collection akuma.. aswell as Reapers' suggestion.. thanks you guys!

I suggest you take a look in any Tolkien books you may have. Look at a few of the names, and maybe make one up from there. Tolkien was a master of the creative arts.

Lol. Right, perhaps check out a book called Hawksong by Amelia Attwater-Rhodes. It has lots of interesting names.

I can't think of any actual names, but I think it would be pretty cool to use irony in the name of the city by making the name describe the opposite of what the village is.
ex: Pleasant Tree... a village of war and poverty. the setting is that of decaying trees and foilage due to the turmoil in the village.
But I can't think of any for your story at the moment.

You know what.. i like that idea explicitkarma.... heeey HEEEY HEY! I like it alot !! :)
"Pleasant Tree" and with the whole Irony setting... hrm, i might have a whole new concept for my project here.. wow. Appriciate the idea buddy! :smile-big
And btw, how come Hawksong by Amelia Attwater-Rhodes has so many interesting names? What kinda book is it? *Curious*

You could always go for some names of different languages. Try looking into some North-eastern European languages, like Dutch. Very interesting. ^ ^
Edit: Sorry, didn't see your post. It's take's place in some far away planet where people can willingly shapeshift into animals. But it consists of two races, those who can shapeshift into birds and those who can shapeshift into snake-like creatures. The two races are constantly fueding and killing one another. It's quite a great book.

Latin is so "done" i think.. German is too obvious... Dutch you say? I know that the language carries alot of "good-looking" names.. like Alsjeblieft
Good point!

Kinda figured you would've asked for Asian names if that is what you were looking for, so I skipped them. So far, Mizumi and Unabara are the only Asian sounding names people have given, so I think most of the names you get will be from other sources. What about Scandinavian or Mediterranean sounding names?
More randomness
Nehdyrr, Camden, Funkytown, Derry, Rattana, Lindale.
I can't think of any more right now (or any good ones at all).
Good luck.

My list is actually the word "village" in several different languages.
Here's a good online multi-language dictionary:
