Another day, another bill: this time to protect kids from racist games

Apparently, a new bill is going around the New York Assembly. This one was introduced by one Kieth L.T. Wright, and he aims to have even more restrictions in the selling of video games. On top of the already existing ESRB ratings, the new bill (A01474) would have minors shielded from racism, cursing, and other forms of insult in video games.

Once approved, the bill:

Prohibits the sale to minors of certain rated video games containing a rating that reflects content of various degrees of profanity, racist stereotypes or derogatory language, and/or actions toward a specific group of persons.

For the record, it was also Keith Wright who previously tried to pass a bill (operative word, of course, is "tried" - he actually failed), one which similarly wanted to place restrictions on games with racial tendencies and religious violence.

Oh for God's sake, I play 40K games with massive xenophobia and I'm not burning effigies. This is ridiculous. Ever since that Columbine incident people keep blaming video games instead of more logical things like...oh let's say irresponsible parenting, schools letting bullies do whatever they want, a legal system ready to sue or prosecute a kid for standing up for himself, teachers too afraid to discipline due to rampant lawsuits, cultures that objectify and/or ostracize those outside the norm.

As for the other video games, that kill blacks or whites or hey, what about WWII games? Let's kill Germans and Japs. Um... so, do people feel these bills have to get passed because some parents don't know how to raise their children? Those people should start looking for "Nanny" in the job department instead of "Bill writer" if they feel so obligated to make sure kids these days get raised properly.

Personally, I don't know how I would've made it this far without my video games.

This sucks. I almost played every video game when I was a teen and hey I turned up pretty well. If some children are turning up screwed that's because they are screwed. Aren't parents normally the ones who buy children these games? Even if the children themselves are purchasing them(as stated in the OP), why aren't the parents monitoring their kids at all? I've been playing video games since I was 5. I'm just fine. If a kid actually gets sick/violent/unacceptable ideas/tendencies because of a video game, I must say, there is something wrong with the child for being unable to separate games from reality, and the parents are falling short for not knowing their own children and what they are doing in their spare time.
