Is anyone watching this? I sorta am. Downloaded the first episode the day it was released and have all episodes that have been subbed thus far, though I've only watched the first... three, I think. I've been busy with other things lately and haven't had the opportunity to continue this.

I've liked what I've seen thus far, though. It's pretty good.

What makes this series so good? It can't be all the gore? As the above poster said, I pretty much only like cool gore that fits, sorta like Guts in Berserk chopping a horse and rider completely in half (yeah! ;) ), but mindless gore with no greater meaning but some dude feels like chopping ppl up for entire episodes... sorta reminds me of M.D. Geist *shrugs*

How can anyone call that an ending? I have so many unanswered questions! I haven't been this dissapointed with an ending since candidate for goddess. Nah I take that back. The ending to Cand. for Goddess was just horrible. At least there was somewhat of a resolution for Elfen Lied.

It's the kind of anime that u know won't have a happy ending after 2 minutes. I seriously doubt that she is still alive tho. But it is a suitable ending, coz i don't know anybody who would be able to live peacefully with the girl who killed their parents.

hhhmmmmm, alright. But theres still some things left that I would like to know. Like the main bad boss.
I want to know why he doesnt have vectors. Is it just the females that has them ? Or is he one of the first diclonius? Plus I dont think they just had 3 diclonius at the lab. So maybe they will send the rest of them after Lucy & CO.
And why did they show Lucy's horn get shoot of ? Maybe they loose their vector powers if there removed ?

How about a time jump ? Yuka and Kouta could have a baby but Nana or Lucy infected kouta so its a diclonius ?

I finished this anime yesterday and I had never watched so much anime in a row before the show. I watched 9 epsidoes or Elfen yesterday and this has become one of my favorite animes (top 10 without a question).

When I first watched the show I thought the whole show was just gonna be gory and stuff... but it's weird how their is parts where it's all goody goody then BAM!!! Heads exploding and stuff. I liked the drama in it and I was a little dissapointed in the ending but I really like the show. I too hope a sequel is made, I have heard an OVA is being made in 2005. After this show I looked for more drama anime and I've been watching Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien and I loved it by the 3rd episode. The drama genre is becoming my favorite anime genre now!!!

Many anime series can be explained in a few words or so, something such as "action packed" or "hilarious" usually do the trick quite fine. This is most certainly not the case with Elfen Lied. True, it is funny at points and it most certainly is action packed, but it's also a lot more. It's almost a perfect blend of its five genres.

When one first takes a glance at the first episode, there first reaction will either be, "Hell yeah!" or "Disgusting..." . I can also assure you that the former will mostly be male while the latter will be female. In the first five minutes, all we get is straight up gore and nudity. The only point of the anime at first seems to be fan service one would think... that's where they'd be wrong as well.

As soon as the episodes pick up more steam (no filler episodes!), it takes you on an emotional roller coaster. One minute its funny, the next its action packed, then it gets so sad you wish humanity would just die. If you do not shed at least one tear during episode 9 or 10 you're a heartless person... don't talk to me anymore.

She is wounded as she reaches her goal, and falls into the ocean. She is washed up on shore the next day to be discovered by two cousins going to college together, Kouta and Yuka. The two do the best they can to help the confused, ignorant girl they found and later name "Nyu".

As Nyu gets herself into more and more trouble, Yuka finds that Kouta is constantly chasing after her and looking out for Nyu, completely ignoring her. This causes Yuka who is in love with Kouta, to become very jealous and hostile towards the middle of the anime.

Mayu is introduced next. She is a homeless girl who is eventually adopted by Kouta and now stays at the Maple Inn. Mayu doesn't play too big of a role in the anime, but she is responsible for bringing Nana into the picture.

Nana is a diclonius like Lucy, and is at first introduced when she is sent to hunt down and capture her as Director Kurama, responsible for the secret research facility and the supervision of Lucy and Nana, ordered. Nana fails however, when she lets her guard down as Mayu runs in on her and Lucy fighting in a graveyard close to the Maple Inn. With her guard down, Lucy literally tears Nana limb from limb, leaving nothing but a head and a torso behind to be discovered by Director Kurama and his cronies. This isn't the last we see of Nana however, as she is soon saved, given artificial limbs, and sent back to the island where she meets Mayu again. Mayu takes her back to the inn, where Nana is at first hostile towards (and even attacks) Lucy. Eventually Nana realizes that Nyu is playful and innocent, she only has to watch out for Lucy. Nana earns her keep and is the fourth girl to move into the Maple Inn with Kouta.

As you can see there are many questions in the series. Who are the diclonius? What will happen between Yuka, Kouta, and Nyu? Will Nyu ever fully mentally recover and become one whole person again? Well, these questions and the rest can only be answered by actually watching Elfen Lied.

"Vectors":

As you read above, dilonius' each have two horns on top of their heads. While they may look like innocent cat girls, they're much more deadly. A diclonius has considerably larger brain mass in certain parts compared to a human. The horns are most likely used to protect those parts.

But what could they possibly do with a larger brain? You may ask. Well, each diclonius has the ability to summon at least two "vectors". "Vectors" are basically invisible hands. Sort of like telekinesis.

The amount of "vectors" and the range of their reach is usually determined by the individual (ie. Nana has only two arms [that I can see] but she can reach further then Lucy, who has four arms). These are both quite potent weapons, and defenders.

Small caliber arms fire (demonstrated above), has absolutely no effect on the "vectors". The only thing known to be able to penetrate one was an anti-tank rifle... and Lucy was off guard when that happened.

Lucy/Nyuu:

Without going into many spoilers, the case of Lucy/Nyuu is that of a split personality. When Lucy was hit square in the head with the anti-tank round, she began to suffer from amnesia. She would only ever awaken from this if she was either hit on the head, or was in great danger (ie. when it's time to kick arse).

When Lucy is herself, she holds no regard whatsoever for human life... besides Kouta's, but that goes down the road of spoilers Lol, no the picture is not some corny sexual innuendo; it has a point! Though she does blush...

She's even been able to take out vast numbers of armed guards, as well as one of their elite soldiers (who she not only tore off an arm from, but also tore out his eyes and broke his other arm).

Though while she can also be evil, she's still "human" (in fact, she's more human then most of the true humans. See episode 10). Sometimes Lucy lets her non-kill-everything-side show... stupid image limit. You'll need to click the links for these.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, what Elfen Lied does was to take a whole bunch of genres and clichés, then meld them all together to create something amazing. Pictures and words do not do it justice. One needs to see what happens to Kouta's family to really see it. One needs to actually see the fight scenes to understand what they mean.

Usually, the ending that the anime received would get a "corny" rating from me. It may of ends in a cliché, but it fits in my opinion. By that time in the series you know all about the characters, so it's easy to accept that type of ending and actually liking it. I hope this review provided you with something to do to cure your boredom... as it cured mine. For five damn hours. But it was worth it for such a sweet series.

I wish there were an OVA or a proper ending to the one that is shown in episode 13...I heard that along the DVD release soon there will be a episode 14 released! Could this episode 14 show me what I nearly cried for at the end of 13!?

It was an interesting anime. Extremely violent. Limbs flying all over the place like they are nothing. The whole cute little girl covered in blood ripping people's heads off aspect they have is what makes it kinda creepy. Interesting nontheless.

Watched the serie about one month ago, and i really liked it. It is indeed extreme violent but it also has its sensetive moments. It is one of the best anime of 2004 I think, combining extreme violence a good story and plot with some romance. It really melts well together :smile-big.

terrific anime...i thought it started a little slow (not slow on the action but the story took a while for it to gain shape) but once we saw some of the backstory it really took off

i do think the gore is excessive but it had a purpose to show how brutal these girls are so i didnt mind so much..the ending while good left a few questions which is good or bad depending on your opinion

i think they did an amazing job to tell a great story in only 13 episodes..if you can look pass the gore, there is a terrific story underneath

fantastic, simply superb. all i can say is wow.

i have to admit.. it got me a little teary eyed in some parts, the drama was excellent.

though there were a lot of loose ends to deal with and i would love to see who is behind the door at the very end. omg i would be so happy if it was lucy cause you didnt actually see her die, just her other horn got blown off.

i cant wait to see episode 14 when its released on the japanese dvd in a may. i hear it wont explain anything or extend the ending though :/

errrm, this episode doesnt have anything to do with the main plot. its just a litttle side story about how nana copes with living with normal people.

Do they actually show this anime on t.v in Japan? Cuz when I saw the first episode, it had to be a DVD episode. The show is fucking sick, and i'm staying away from it. That 15 minute of gore scared the shit out of me more than Gantz did.

you should give it another chance. i would be lying to you if i said there would be no more gore after the first episode. i have to admit that i was a bit skeptical about this anime when everyone was talking about the blood and decapatations but once you look past that it is really a great heartfelt anime. the brutality is evened out by the sincere emotional moments.

it goes without saying that this series is not for the squeemish.

But just for your information, there was a 14th episode made as a special OAV. However, what happened in it occured around episode 10 rather than after 13. It basically just showed Nana getting used to life in the house and some extra things about lucy.

I just watch this awsome serie on one night. It top my top 5 rank so suddenly. The animation, music and the plot...... its were all so.. awsome and yet, depressing. My eyes was full of tears. The ending was very touching. I've never been so touched in my life.

elfen lied is amazing. I don't mind the gore and nudity. They are, after all, critical to this anime's impact on viewers. and its neccesary for the audiance to understand its story.

I love the storyline, it has shone the principle of self simpathy. And the story is also quite complexed for 14 episodes. Unlike most other people, I thought the end was one of the most dramatic way to end it. believe me, a story won't be that good with a "lived hapily ever after" ending. Plus, this way we can imagine a lot more than the anime itself.

this anime is too short for its own good. it has much undiscover potentail ignored from the serie. The fan base became limited due to the unsatified question half hanging. It is also an inconvinence that the studio resigned from making a OVA... but this anime is a good anime none the less

Yeah, I agree. Beeing alone is painful, however, don't people notice that? Those who have people/friends/ around them..... do they care? This serie gave me that thought. Kouta became my paradigm. Omg, I got the final volume today and my mind is messed up. I had a sense of satisfaction by the end but then again I still felt the need for more. It just ended with me still having some questions about what happened. Though I guess I felt satisfied, I need more closure.

Well in my eyes this anime never ended because even though it has been mentioned that Lucy was killed/died I still think she survived and had changed her mind to stay alive to be with the boy she liked so much and that it was her shadow behind the door when that clock began to work again.

This anime is by far one of the best I've seen the gore, the violence, the tragic stories of the characters, the overall story, I loved it. I enjoyed every episode from beginning to end. Though it did leave me wanting more but I guess that's what made it even better.

Allright for people who don't understand the ending I'll explain it to you so you know how good it is!

At the end you see a horn being shot off Lucy's head, well the shade has no horns but It's resembling Lucy. Both Lucy's horns were shot off that means that Lucy has lost her powers and actually is human that's why Nana couldn't sense her

So, after many months of procrastination I finally got off my lazy ass and took the effort to actually put the Dvd-r into my computer, grab some rice & spam, juice, and lay on my ass all day and watch this series.

I'm on episode 11 when I remembered people were telling me that they weren't sure about ep 13 (i think it was) as they weren't sure whether it should have come before or after 12.

I'm the type that hates ending series because I'm worried that they'll usually screw it up so I'll just stop at the episode efore last and kinda distract myself to where I forget all about it.... so is Ep 13 gonna ruin the flow of the show? What's the deal with that... also, obviously i haven't fnished yet so no spoilers. I do know that there's a bridge scene coming up as I walked in on my friend watching that part.... but yeah, spoiler tags ftw.

Personally, I thought it fit. The last few seconds still has people pulling their hair out, but other than that, most of it makes sense. It settles everything between Lucy and.....the other...dude...

It fits in perfectly. However, there's no denying that ep 13 has a slightly different tone and pace in terms of storytelling. However, this doesnt make it bad, nor does it "ruin" the series.

Its a brilliant end. Elfen Lied's end is one of my faves.

It had a fine ending....the last few seconds were cliche with what they did and it leaves things to the viewers imagination as to what happened, but it in no way takes away from the series at all.

i just watched the ending...so sad...um one question, did Lucy actually die? cause some say she did, but other didn't. i dunno cause i watched the extra episode and there's Lucy..

yeah and know the song stuck in my head...truly one of the best anime...

There is a lot of stuff that is left unanswered, you end up with the impression that they wanted to leave the door open for some ovas but nothing happened. Maybe it was too controversial or too "artsy" for the studios.

Well they told me the manga ending and it is some sad stuff. :cry.

the door scene at the end is up to the viewers imagination on who it was....

the extra ep was technically episode 10.5....

as far as I know, only up to chapter 63 has been scanalated...which would be somewhere in volume 7....I believe volume 12 is the last volume

Yes, this can be a very moving/ emotional show but damn is it ever good. I remember when I initially decided to watch it I had no idea what kind of show it was going to be. But yes if you can get through Lucy's past you can get through the rest.

This was definately a great series, and Nana was such a great character.
When I saw the first episode I was so caught off guard when I saw what happened who I thought would be at least a minor character in the series (the dumb girl with the glasses that is).

Elfen Lied was a great show I now regret it ended so soon... It was really violent, at the beginning I was a little scared to see the rest but it turned out good you were kind of linked to the story. I cryed and laught with this serie. It was really great.

I remember at the time I watched it, I thought it was the saddest thing ever. It was the first true "sad anime" I watched. I almost cried but not quite. Then I watched the Kenshin OVA's shortly after and that did it. But it is still really sad, especially the last ep.

I guess I probably didn't cry because to me Elfen Lied wasn't just sad, it was depressing. There was some heavy shit going on in that anime. It wasn't normal issues that everyday people have to deal with, it was much more deep and shocking. I guess I was too depressed to cry.

I think Elfen Lied is a great anime *-* I didn't watch all episodes, but I'll contunue on watching, favorite characters: Nyuu/Lucy, Nana and Kouta.

It's not a long series, so it shouldn't take too long to finish. I think I went through it in like a day or 2. Nana was my favorite hands down. Lucy/Nyuu kinda annoyed me at first.
