ive watched through all of them. friend of mine owns them all. its a pretty badass serious, given you like samurai sword fighting. i think its a very well done anime. i would have to agree though the 3rd arced sucked. but the 1st two rocked. however if you liked this series DEFINITELY check out Samurai X trust and betrayal the movie. and also Reflections.
I have the intire series, all 4 OVA's, all 4 OVA's Directors Cut and the Movie on DVD :D
plus I'm buying the manga now^^ I have 6 vol^^ (of course I've read them all scanlated, but I have to own them, y'know?^^)
so, yeah, I'm a fangirl :D
It was awesome until it went seperate ways from the manga after the Shishio arc which then grew...very lame. But ep1-62 rocked.
Favourite characters: Hajime Saitou and Soujiro

I love Rurouni Kenshin, I've seen all of the Ovas and up till the end of the Kyoto arc. I love Rurouni Kenshin its one of my favorites. My favorite character would have to be Kenshin or Soujiro.

I never really liked it, because I could never figure out if the characters were supposed to have special powers, of is the writers just cheated at lot and made it look like they did.

The anime sucked. The only thing they managed to do right, was the Kyoto arc. The initial arc was terrible (even Watsuki admitted this) and the third arc was just... ugh.
The seishouen also sucked. Badly. It was just downright terrible.
Tsuiokuhen was amazing though. Probably the best made OVA ever created.
And, of course, the manga is also incredible. It was great from start to finish.

Rurouni Kenshin by far is the most slow english dubbed airing anime. In CN they almost reached to the last season but suddenly they decided not to air it anymore and now they're airing it from the beginning and only saturdays @_@
When I was around 9 years old, I already had watched the Shishio (sp?) season in a local channel in my country in spanish plus it was all uncut. ^_^

I only got to watch what they aired on Cartoon Network. I did like what little I saw of the Kyoto/Shishio arc. I'll have to watch the ending to that someday, since I still don't know what happened...
It was awesome until it went seperate ways from the manga after the Shishio arc which then grew...very lame. But ep1-62 rocked.
Favourite characters: Hajime Saitou and Soujiro
When RK was edited for TV Saitou's cigarette changed to a toothpick (?) and then back to a cigarette in some scenes. It was... amusing. Ah, Hajime Saitou. I was in LOVE with him... until along came Hatake Kakashi...

Blah, blah, blah manga is better blah, blah.
Discounting the filler episodes, Rurouni Kenshin is probably the best samurai series there is. (Although I haven't read more than a few volumes of Lone Wolf and Cub). OVA's are excellent, manga is excellent, voice work is excellent.
It's just a shame that the Jinchu arc couldn't get animated in its proper form, it was set up (IE: The freaky long-limbed ninja who got away from Kenshin in the Betrayal episode), but not followed through.
My only faults with the series are in the Raijuuta chapters (mediocre writing), and the battles between the Kenshingumi and the fights with the Six Partners and the Four Gods (seemed way to conveiniently set-up number-wise).
Seta Soujiro

Or Samurai X.... nah, RK is better!
Anyone like it? I'm a real big fan of RK, go Soujiro!!

03-11-2005, 03:55 AM
Of course I like it. Many fillers in the anime though compared to the manga. And it probably has the coolest characters in any anime I've seen so far. And among thoes are:
Hiko Seijuro (Kenshin's teacher)
Seta Soujiro (Beeing called 'Tenken no Soujiro'* is quite cool)
Himura Kenshin (Well, he's the main character, and who dosen't love the 'Oroooo...!')
I don't really feel like writing a huge post about why I like/love it, so I'll make it breif. I love it because of it's unrivaled story, great OVA's to go with it, one of the best soundtracks. Ah, the list goes on. That's what I think.
*NOTE: 'Tenken no Soujiro' litterally means 'Soujirou the Divine Sword/Heavenly Sword'.

I haven't read the manga but I liked both the OVA (samurai X) and original series very much. They both have their good qualities which separates them from the mainstream of anime. :P The series is the original and has a great story. As mentioned earlier it has many filler episodes, but I don't think that matter much since it gives the viewer a chance to get to know the characters better. Some people don't like the comical part of the series and think it brings down the total qualite of the plot. I on the other hand like the fun parts of the series as well ("oro" can crack me up some times :laugh ).
Compared to the series the OVA has a much more somber and sad tone and lacks ANY jokes.:crying Telling the story of Kenshins past and of how he became a justice protecting wanderer. The sekond part of the OVA also makes a new ending to the story about Rurouni Kenshin. The OVA has staggering animations :nuts and the plot is also very good (according to me).
The ending part has been SOOOO flamed by reviewers and other viewers which I think is sad. They just can't accept the new ending to the plot.
According to me the entire OVA is a masterpiece..

Merged your Ruroken thread w/ an earlier one Seta Soujiro :)
I love the series as well, prefer the manga but the anime is pretty awesome (well, whatever bits I managed to watch here and there, anyway) ^___^ Like many others I was disappointed the Jinchuu arc was never brought to screen - the OVAs were rather dark in tone but to their credit, quite elegantly done. As for the ending - let's just say I find Kenshin is extremely likeable as a character, so I was rooting for a happy ending for the poor battousai - hence another reason I prefer the manga XD And yes, who doesn't love the "Oro!" XD

The Kenshin anime isn't even any good until the Saitou shows up ; but the Kyoto arc is some of my favorite anime to watch .

First of all, there are series that aired slower than Kenshin, like DBZ and Pokemon. Oh, and Cartoon Network's contract for Kenshin has just run out, so starting next Saturday is an hour of GT.

"CN ruins everything." Yeah, right. They've aired some of the best anime around, some of it almost uncut (GitS). They may edit it, but they're letting up on that, and at least they're not as bad as 4Kids.
And I actually agree with you on the second part, although I do like dubs.

rurouni kenshin was a good anime overall, i think. i really liked the shishio arc, and i was just dying to see the jinchuu arc animated a few years back but they never did it and instead put in 30 whole eps of fillers which i didn't even bother watching.
the only ova i actually liked was the memories one (when kenshin was still hitokiri battousai) because it was really well done. i didn't like seisouhen that much, because i was half hoping to at least see more of the jinchuu arc and beyond from that ova, but instead all we get is the fight between kenshin and enishi. oh, and if any of you want to know the true ending of rurouni kenshin, you'd better start reading the manga and it's specials; believe, you'll be way more satisfied in doing that than watching the ovas.
Coolest character imo was Hiko Seijuro (he is UNBEATABLE!!! All hail HIKO!!!) and Seta Sojiro (he is just so cool, i would love it if he gets his own manga out telling his story)

That is the story about Kenshin before Ruruouni Kenshin. 8 years I think.
And as far as I know, Reminiscence only has one name, the one you wrote is probably the french translation of the OVA's original name.

heres my sugguestion, for anime watch 1->62. then stop, after that read the manga storyline that follows what was left over of episode 62 (shishio's demise). The reason of this is that when they made the anime 63-95 were "fake" episodes created by produces b/c the anime caught up to the manga and thus b/c of the explosion of popularity the produces chucked in some wacky and stupid storyline that just plainly sucks, as a result the best arc in the whole series of rurouni kenshin was never animated. but honestly i really sugguest you read the manga chapters that were after episode 63 of anime. OR. a second sugguestion is to watch Samurai X (trust/betrayal) after watching episode 63. Samura IS Rurouni kenshin, it was just named that way so it felt more appealing to american audience. samurai X dipicts the past of kenshin. after you watch that follow with the manga, as the manga will follow off nicely after samurai x. trust me ;) its worth it

If you have only seen the anime, trust me on this one, READ THE MANGA!!! I love the anime(1-62) but the manga is also amazing. Don't just read 18-28 for the Jinchuu Arc if you seen all of the anime. I saw the entire anime then read the manga and i thought the manga was better. Just something about it. You can't put it down or in my case you can't minimize it. I actually recomend though if you haven't seen the anime, watch the dubbed version. Mainly due to Kenshin's voice. His japanese voice sounds too girly and it's inferior to Richard Cansino's voice in my opinion. The first 4 OVAs are awesome when he's the battousai then the 5th one is semi-cool since he fights Enishi but its just a sad attempt to animate the jinchuu arc. But don't even touch the 6th OVA, it is utter crap. It is totally pseudo-kenshin, he doesn't act like himself one bit and the mood in general is depressing. Anime(1-62) 9/10 Manga 10/10

I quite preferred the japanese seiyuu to the english dubs, mainly because the anti-thesis of the character of kenshin was done extremely well by the voice.

Yes, the manga is wayyyyyyy better than the anime if you look at it in terms of storyline. The anime missed out possibly the best arc in the series because it caught up to the manga, and so the last 30 or so episodes of the anime are filler.
Also, the anime ended with Kenshin dying of a disease. The greatest swordsman ever, kicking the bucket from the flu?!!! Man, that annoyed me.:mad The manga has a much better and happier ending in my opinion.

love the series, it's awesome, i own all three arcs and all the OVA on dvd, although the third arc was quite a dissapointment to the series, it is still bearable and some episodes are incredibly funny too, just don't expect the emotional aspects and character developments to be present in this third arc, and i must say, it has the lamest ending to this wonderful show EVER...and i hope many who have seen the third arc will agree.
I have, also the entire third arc and half of the second arc on original manga, and for all hard core fans of RK, i definately recommend getting your hands on the manga for the third and final arc, more character development, great story (for those that don't know, it focuses on the return of tomoe's brother seeking revenge, hence titled the revenge arc) and the ending was great as well, albeit a little sad in my opinion, but still a great ending to this wonderful series
and DO get the third OVA 'reflection' it's soooo beautiful, although a word of caution, if you don't like to cry, don't watch it.....i hope i haven't spoiled it, but instead made you guys wanna watch it :smile-big

Try here (http://www.mininova.org/search/?search=kenshin). It has all the episodes up for bittorrent download. However, the files are quite large, (about 5.5 GB per 25 episodes).
Oh and if you just want to generally discuss Kenshin check out this thread:http://forums.narutofan.com/showthread.php?t=5566

No problem.
Just use the "download never" option on bittorrent (or is that only bittornado?) and just choose the episodes you want to download.

I don't know whether Bit Comet has it, but with Bit Tornado, there's a details screen you can call up which shows what percentage of each episode has downloaded. On there, you can right click on an episode and set the priority of it, including choosing not to download it.

I made this connection between the 2 shows although it is subtle it may hold true. In Rurouni Kenshin, Makoto Shishio's sword is called Mugenjin, and the 2 main characters in Samurai Shamploo are named, Mugen and Jin. Now this is probably a mere coinsidence seeing as though Shishio's sword doesn't really have any significance to the series, but I just thought it was kind of interesting seeing as RK and SC are both samurai animes. Anyone else notice this?
there are a lot of hints (jokes) towards other shows in samurai champloo....and kenshin was quite popular....
But besides them both being eh.. fighter (kenshin and mugen never were samurai as far as I kn)w... I don't see more ressemlblances

Could be. The shows are quite different, however, aside from the main characters being samurai. I doubt RK inspired Champloo, but it's possible...
Oh, and thanks for reminding me on the Mugenjin thing. Nearly forgot the name of his sword... you're a bad fan, Kyuubi! Bad! :blink

I've been a sucker for ninja and samurai animes. Before Naruto, I've watched Rurouni Kenshin, which is a great series, IMO. Great story, very exciting fight scenes with a little comedy on the side.
And I watched the whole series four times. That's how I liked it.
Aside from the series, I've also seen the movie and the OVAs. I can't remember how it went, though since it's been three years since I saw it. Oh well, I guess I just have to watch it again.

I don't think I've posted in this thread, RK was the first anime I could bare to watch and it got me to where I watched more, whcih of course brings me to this site today :D
It's funny, the first 3 anime shows I ever saw were on the one toonami lineup after classes ended around 4:00 pm where I live, it was DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, and RK, which we always figured "save the best for last" (hell even the Toonami guy said it lol). Now I've really gottten to like Hakusho as well.
Anyway, here's my contribution to the thread heheh, my favorite character probably of all time, Saito Hajime.

the dub just made me throw up for hours. Kenshin sounded more feminine in the dub that in the sub, which I find really sad since his seiyuu was a woman in Japan.
If you haven't watched this yet, watch the sub before you ever touch the dub. If possible don't touch that dub period.

I dont know how people can handle watching dubbed versions of things.. i recently had to suffer through a few episodes of GTO dubbed in cantonese.. and it was horrible.
Anyway, Kenshin was awesome.. yes 3rd arc did suck ALOT.
I own the series and the OVAs. Something you can watch over and over again.. Some of the storyline is a bit repetitive though.. I want them to make a spinoff of the yrs when he was actually hitokiri battousai... that'd be damn awesome.

Well you can always by the DVD's which are dirt cheap these days. Or buy the season collections, I think their are two of them, each one is $60 in stores. $120 for Kenshin is a good deal because Kenshin is really good and encouraged me to watch more samurai animes and just more anime. I do hate some of the music in Kenshin, but dubbing always sucks most of the time.

The RK boxsets are 100% uncut. For spoken languages you have a choice between English, English with subtitles(not dubtitles), Japanese, and Japanese with subtitles(not dubtitles). Liner notes in the Special Features explaining and translating certain things of Japanese that aren't usually familiar with an American audience. Fan Art. and theres mores stuff aswell.

One of my roommates just after I got out of college had the first half of that on DVDs and the Cowboy Bebop collection. I remember watching non-subbed, non dubbed bootlegs of things like Akira and Vampire HD with my friends in highschool. But anyway, because of those DVDs, I started getting into anime again, then forgot about it for another couple years. When I realized I could download the rest of RK, I decided I might as well pick up Bebop and Trigun as well. That, of course, was not enough and so Samurai Champloo was next followed by Naruto and Bleach.

The first 40 or so episodes were great. Just a shame the series, for me at least, started to go downhill towards the end of the Kyoto arc. After that, we got treated to fillers so awful that I believe forced the show to end early.
The OVAs are amazing. They put the series to shame. It's no surprise Trust & Betrayal are top of the AnimeNfo top 200 anime list. I ordered Samurai X: The Collection as soon I'd watched everything related to Kenshin.

but then series + tsukiohen and seisouhen OVA's easily takes #1
you cant say youve seen all of kenshin unless youve seen the OVA's too.. they pretty much complete the story (although tsukiohen doesnt follow the manga ending.. imo was a better ending anyway, animation was beatiful.. so old yet better than animes out now)
hated the last ova, was too sad and since i didnt watch the whole anime dunno the story surrounding the scar.

OVA's are beginning and end, telling the story of Kenshin's first love and the origin of his infamous scar. Then they also condense the jinchuu arc with Enishi and then it wraps up the the story of Kenshin in a memorable ending. :crying

RK was my first obsession. ^^
Rurouni Kenshin series - I liked them even for a few differences in the manga. The only filler season I appreciated was the Shougo arc. Everything after that (medicine arc and whatnot) didn't really sate my hunger for RK.
Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuioku Hen - Best RK ever. Although the theme of the show was darker than the manga (Jinchuu arc flashback), it is really definitely worth watching.
Rurouni Kenshin: Seisou Hen - Well done but I really don't like the ending. ^^; Manga ending was better.
Rurouni Kenshin: Ishin Shishi no Requiem - Good story. ^^ Very nice animation. Average for a movie. The way Shigure died is just plain nuts. I mean, he coud have just snatched Toki away from the gunshots. He wasn't that really injured.

I really don't know which I will like more. For instance I have watched Naruto and Bleach in sub, and loved them both (I cant even watch the naruto dub after 178 episodes of sub, it makes me cringe)

ive watched trigun, bepop, hunter x hunter, naruto, bleach, fma, and one piece. i loved them all. so i started rk and im up to 21 in the anime and ive gotta say this anime is horribly overrated. the cheese factor is very high, but i can stand it if there are other redeeming qualities, but the plot is weak (like naruto fillers weak), the characters are weak except for kenshin, the fights are either weak or just don't make any sense, and the complete reliance on kenshin is laughable. someone recommended the manga instead of the anime, so i might give that a shot, but meh... i don't see what the hype is all about. :notrust

28 episodes is quite a chunk of time, i usually give an anime 20 episodes to hook me... but i guess ill take your word for it and keep going, but you better be right or ill :bang you lolz
lol. Don't worry, you won't regret it. ;)

i dunno, i would say that vash carried that whole anime from start to finish. i guess i just liked vash the character moreso than the anime itself.

Yes the Kyoto arc is where the show really picks up. Even though I enjoyed the wandering samurai arc anyway. I even like the tales of the meiji arc...lol. Even though it is filler it is leaps and bounds ahead of naruto fillers.
I ended up watching it in Jap with subs and it is now one of my top 3 favorite anime :)

Kenshin is my favorite anime. Even so I still don't like the second OVA story as it wasn't too truthful to the manga as it could have been.

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I havent been able to read all of this thread in case of spoilers.
Does anyone know what chapter of the Manga is when the anime finished? So what chapter of the manga equals ep 64?
BakaKage
06-16-2006, 07:44 PM
I'm not sure as to what chapter exactly but I do believe the ending of the Kyoto arc (Shishio Arc) and the start of Junchuu arc (Revenge Arc) end and start respectively on volume 18.

Yeah Vol 18 is the last of the Kyoto arc and in the anime episode 63 is considered the end of the Kyoto arc. In the anime, Tales of the Meiji starts at 64, but is not in the manga. One of the stories, however is in an official RK novel coming out soon in English.
Hope that is helpful.

I'm now on episode 48 of the anime (Bought the DVD set) and was planning on stopping on the final canon episode and move straight onto the manga, and then return to the filler episodes another time lol.

I really, really, REALLY want to. And then maybe we could tlak about getting the final arc animated... I mean, he still has the rights, he will do until 2007 (Anime rights last for a decade apparantly) and it would be so awesome to be animated.... But I can't... coz I live in England lol

I actually don't like the serie at all, I've watched till ep 17.
That Kenshin dude is just too good and kind-harted, he's like Goku in DBZ or any other western action hero.
When he's kicking some bad guys ass and not killing him, I'm like : "Gimmy a Break!!"
It's a kind of a serie I always hope the bad guys win.

I wouldn't mind watching the anime so can anyone point me in the direction of the best website to download (preferably subbed) episodes?

From the end of the XVIII century, Japan had to solve serious problems of foreign and inner politics: on one side, the pressure of foreign powers, in particular from America, obliged the emperorto break off with his isolationist attitude and to open to the western world; on the other, numerous popular putsches started on a revolutionary process that took to the end of the shogun of Tokugawa. In this period of conflicts and bloody fights, a man distinguished himself for his pitiless violence, the samurai Battosai Himura. He was nicknamed the killer samurai because his reprisal consisted in cutting in two whoever met on it's way. It was his blood-soaked sword to inaugurate the new Meiji age. With the end of the revolt, Battosai disappeared from the circulation, but it's name remained in the legend like example of limitless force.
Now Himura has decided to abandon the Battosai name and he is called Kenshin. He's in continuous wandering for the entire Japan, and he always carries with him a reverse-blade sword, that if used as a normal sword it cannot cut anything. His wondering takes him to Tokyo, and it's here in the capital that the Battosai will newly make talk about him...

These are the first words that exit from the pen of the great Nobuhiro Watsuki when introducing the protagonist of this fascinating manga: KENSHIN, WANDERING SAMURAI (RUROUNI KENSHIN). It is an historical manga, where the invented vicissitudes of the protagonist find as background the history and the personages of Japan of the Meiji age, with their contradictions and the difficulties of a fundamental period of the Japanese history.

Well, technically the fight between kenshin and Enishi was animated in the Reflections OVA. But that's about it for animating part of Jincuu arc...=/
Seeing the Jinchuu arc animated would truly be amazing, but I don't think they will. They would have done it by now already if they could've.

So I remember reading somewhere that the best arc of rurouni kenshin wasnt actually animated. I mean i realized that pretty much everything after shishio had to be filler cause it wasnt up to kenshin standards before that. So if not everything was animated, why did they waste their time making all those fillers to have nothing after them, and what all wasn't animated?
Thanks

I would like to object right there. Shishio was not a filler. The rest of the show was fillers. Read the manga to understand why shishio was not a filler. There's alot to explain for shishio's Story. mostly cause he wanted to take over all of japan. It's kind of hard to explain. Read the manga yourself to understand. Now making the fillers part was the creators idea. He wanted to show what they were doing back then in those time and what they did in their spare times. so mostly giving us a funny and better history lesson on japan. In books like 18-28 those were already animated. How you might ask? Samurai X. Which was all about his past, and then his fight with his step-brother enishi. And then after vol 28 what happens to kenshin, kenji, karou and everyone else. So yeah pretty much all that. There is one thing the creator did only for japan and that's Yahiko no sakabatou. Which was after 28 when kenshin gave yahiko his sword and mostly it's him and kenshin's sword. Anymore Questions you need to ask?
ShinobiAaron

I realize shishio wasn't a filler...thas why i said everything after him was. What i don't completely understand is what all i missed if i dont read the manga. I own the box set and Samurai x reflections and the kenshin movie that has the same art style as the anime..oh and the samurai x that is all about his relationship with tomoe. So what is this about him having a half brother? OH and also in the very first opening with the song "freckles" when it shows a bunch of kenshins enemies, i recognize all of them except the fourth one...who is that?...
Just read the manga. :3
First OP... fourth one... that's Raijuta (http://www.arcticnightfall.com/kenshin/characters.php?name=raijuta&group=bg).

Because the fillers ran so long, fans began to lose interest, the ratings went down, and that was the end of it. No ratings. No budget. No Kenshin :(

i Well, I started to watch it. I love it.
The show is very interesting and the dub is pretty much perfect. I recognize a lot of the voices from the Xenosaga games and those games (minus EPII) had basically an all-perfect cast of voices.
Kenshin doesn't sound the least bit feminine. Soft-spokena nd reflective yes, but not girly.
So yeah, it's pretty awesome.

Hi :3
There is one thing the creator did only for japan and that's Yahiko no sakabatou.
Nope. In Spain (And, by extent I suppouse France) it was relesed along with volume 28 (It was published as a whole... you get volume 28, and the last few pages, instead of being the original ending, are Yahiko no Sakabatou).
What it wasn't released outside of japan were 6 colored pages that happens after yahiko sakabatou, in where they talk about the kenshingumi (it's some kind of picnic, with Kenshin, Kaoru, Kenji and Yahiko. Aoshi and Misao joins later (aoshi has a new look). Then they talk about Saito (Who was working at hokkaido IIRC) and Sano (Who was in china, long hair, beard and tiger cap included... like we see him in the last 2 Kenshin OVAS (Wich, BTW I totally hate :3... It's the only piece of Kenshin animation I didn't bought... ending not approved by Watsuki = do not want, thanks :3!)).
And that's it :3.
PD: BTW, They could pull a Hellsing and re-animate the series till shishio (but everything condensed.... let's say 1 OVA for Sano and Jin-E parts, 1 OVA for Aoshi and Raijuta parts, and 2 or 3 OVAS for Kyoto arc....). And, then, Do the Jinchuu Arc :3!!!! (4 OVAS maybe : D). For a grand total of... say, 8 OVAS????. Maybe they can condese it more... but bleh!... They can do as they want as long as it's done!! :3!.

I know. I wish someone would do it in the near future, so that it might be possible to have all, or at least most, of the original voice cast in on it. The manga had easily enough material for another whole season.

I've seen and read it all! Its my favourite series of all times and its timeless: Sanosuke Sagara is my fav character, but since this show is so awesome its hard not to like in some way the other characters as well.
Shishio is just the best villain, and his subordinates are so well made that it makes the show just even more awesome on the level of how the variety comes together to the single goal of destruction and rebellion.
Rurouni Kenshi...simply the best.
