Why are Anbu useless?

This isn't meant to be a rant thread but from what I've seen, ANBU are hardly "elite ninjas" I know Kakashi and Yamoto were ANBU but they are the only good ninja I have ever seen that have come from that organization.

ANBU are supposed to be elite ninjas, jounin-level, but how did a roomfull of ANBU get killed by Kabuto when guarding Sasuke after the prelims? Or when Sandaime was fighting Orochimaru. One of the ANBU just stupidly went straight at the barrier and caught himself on fire. Afterwards, they simply watched the fight, not realizing they could go under the roof, thus under the barrier, to intervene in the fight.

ANBU aren’t useless so much as they’re facelessness and their reputation allows them to be killed en masse to show how awesome a character is. The reason ANBU is still respected is that any ANBU who takes off their mask is usually unspeakably badass see Itachi, Kakashi, Sai and Yamato. Being in ANBU automatically creates the illusion that you’re strong so they can be beaten while masked to show a characters strength but our perception of them remains so great that they are untarnished by it

Ah, but I always assumed that if you are a really skilled ANBU member then you are staying in the shadows and remaining an unknown. That's the whole point of them, to work behind the scenes and get things done that way. There is also the thought that if you are too strong ANBU wouldn't suite you because ideally the village probably would want you to be visible and in the face of everyone else. Doing missions in the open and all.

Well they are really minor characters and also don't forget that they were fighting other characters who were also at their level. It's not like a Genin outsmarted them.

The ANBU also aren't shown in the series that much actually.

Like someone said they are like the C.I.A, more used for covert missions than brute force. That may be why the most powerful characters are no longer in them. Their main purpose is spying, and when one of the ninjas get powerful enough, they are pulled out to do actual missions/work.

They seem to be full of young ninjas. When they get older and experienced, ie Kakashi, Yamato, etc, then they leave the organization to do their own thing.

They are spying ninjas, not fighters. That's why Kabuto owned them so badly....

Hence their representation as cats. Cats = stealth. They ability to slip in and out of places quietly or unnoticed.

Supposedly scary elite shinobi hiding behind rodent chipmunk masks, I mean come on!Why'd you need ask why they suck in the first place? They were just meat bags that were supposed to say 'whoever kills me, means they're really good' written all over.

I mean look at their track so far:
1. A pair of ANBU showing too late at the Forest of Death, AFTER Anko mets Orochimaru.
2. The same two go all stupid at the very sudden discovery of Anko's Curse Seal (Pfft, elites my ass!)
3. One of the two gets a bit creeped out or disturbed while watching the video tape on Gaara's arrival to the tower in the centre of the Forest of Death.
4. All the ANBU scapegoats got taken out by Kabuto, those stationed to guard Sasuke at the hospital. (Again, just to show great Kabuto really is)
5. Another ANBU bites the dust at Kabuto's hands, just so he could sneak into the final phase of the Chuunin exam.
6. They sat and watch the Hokage fight, only to be stopped by Kidomaru's web thingy. (Put a bunch of Genin in their place and it would really change anything. They were there simply to comment of the match between the 3rd and Orochimaru)

Basically, they sucked even way back in Part 1.

anyway,a few of the arguably most popular characters served time in the ANBU black OPs.not to mention a couple of them are now getting face time in the manga.
its always good to have those stock characters in a manga,to help balance out the population of main characters.

and for the record...im preeeeetty sure any ONE of the ANBU could kick tenten's sorry ass without much effort,whether people know their names or not.^_^

though i DO wish kishi would sprinkle them throughout the story a bit more.lol

If the non-elite (ie. Main characters group) are dropping the villains (who are considered to be powerful mod) like flies, then the villains need to have a balance by dropping the elite-nin (ie. ANBU) like flies as well in order to make them look like they are still the powerful mod they claimed to be. The ANBU seem to be a clever way of showing how badass an enemy the heroes are going up against. They are built up as an elite group so when they get waxed it can build up a villian's street cred. They are the sneakest of shinobi though. That's evident by the characters with ANBU pasts.

Unnamed characters = "fodder". Their purposes are to:

- make relevant characters look badass (ex: Kabuto)
