In the realm of folk-rock singer/songwriters, there exists 2 groups

1) Good singer/songwriters
2) AMAZING singer/songwriters

but lately, there is a new group

3) Devendra Banhart

The man is such a genius, it's simply unfair. Devendra Banhart's voice is a strange and ineffable instrument. It whistles eerily like the wind through loose boards, changes shape and drops into the realm of a scratchy and androgynous blues, toys with a vowel in a faux British accent, and emerges as a child recounting a dream to the tune of his music box. It strings non-sequiturs across a fifty minute Freudian slip-n-slide, and convinces you of nothing less than its dead-earnestness. When you're in the mood for it, it's an exciting trip.

I have his albums Nino Rino, Rejoicing In The Hands & I just got my hands on his new record Cripple Crow (which is slated to be released 3 months from now, dont ask how I got it :ninja)

Uploading them all =]

Spot on Moe :thumbs

I was thinking of making a Devendra Banhart thread myself. Im obssessed with the video to one of his songs: A Ribbon. I love it when something like that comes together because the video perfectly captures the eery quality of his songcraft and it is beautiful and impressive to see/hear.

And isnt he awesome? If you think his other records were good, his new cd is EONS better.

Does anyone happen to have Oh Me Oh My... or The Black Babies EP? Those are the only Devendra records Im missing =[

also, if you like Devendra, check out Joanna Newsom, Vertier and Espers :thumbs

I can see Sun Kil Moon are so highly regarded by you Moe. They make songs about such tragic but also heroic circumstances that you cant help but be touched by it. Mark Kozeleks voice is also so soulful and emotional, coupled with perfect lyrics make you reflect on what he is crafting songs about and relating them to your own experiences. Thanks for sharing ^^

Is his Red House Painters' material as good as this?

mow
07-20-2005, 03:24 PM
Yep, and his solo works too :amuse (many :glomps go to S&G for uping them for me <3). Though Sun Kil Moon holds a special place in my heart. I simply adore that record so much.

Yeah, Red House Painter and Mark Kozelek in general rule. But I agree with moe Sun Kil Moon is the best. They really make me go into a dreamy state, where my mind isn't focusing on anything bad.

I love them.

moe: I should be glomping you. :glomp Because you recommended these amazing musicians to me.

Bump for Devendra's beard!

I'm in the process of uploding Nino Rojo, Rejoicing In The Hands and Cripple Crow for Maximous. Anyone in need of those records?

metronomy
01-19-2006, 12:56 PM
Rejoicing In The Hands and Cripple Crow would be nice master moe.

Should I pimp the Tom Vek album?

mow
01-19-2006, 01:03 PM
You should! And I'll upload Vetiver for you as well.

We still need to pimp out Patrick Wolf to the masses. Wind In The Wires is painfully underrated.

We do indeed, I'll get on to Tom Vek and Patrick Wolf, I'll upload both his album, as I do think Lycanthopy is crack as well.

I was just thinking how heavenly a colaboration between these artists would be (Wolf, Devandra, etc). I've always wanted a Joanna Newsom/Banhart project as well. I dont think my ears could handle the joy!

The new Vetiver will feature a Joanna Newsom/ Devendra collab! Im so fucking psyched about that :spaz. Banhart's guitar + jonna's harp = secks.

and your a fellow Jonna fan, my love for you is ever growing ender XD

Isnt she? Everyone thinks she's jus ta freaky odd singer. I think she's rather cute :love. Plus; her vocals remind me of what Bjork must've sounded like as a teenager.

Is it weird that I much prefer Devandra's Spanish language tracks to those he sings in English? I hope not, because I really, really do.

She is beautiful. Very Sugarcubish I agree! Such innocence while commanding an intensity that isn't found in a lot of music.

joe; I tend to feel that way sometimes. Espically when I'm in the mood for something I can understand, yet I can vivdily translate. But on the whole Devendra's work is solid toe by toe.

ender; spot on indeed :amuse
