View Full Version : Bands you dislike with a passion even if they make decent music

Like the title says.

Me personally, I dislike Muse with a fiery passion. I know that they make good music and have like a gazilion fans that preach the word * bad bands have them too but whatever* But I just can't fucking stand them. I know I'm supposed to be the impartial one here in the forum...but when I got a Muse song as entry for the mixtapes, I promised myself I'd fight to the bone to keep it out of the tracklist. That's how much I dislike Muse.

Anyone? XD

Sid

Why do you dislike them then?

I don't think I actually dislike an artist who makes decent music. I might not be my taste or something, but I can't dislike anybody for no reason.

Voynich

I have no idea. Seriously. That's why I added the decent music thing. I know they make good music, but I just can't stand them. Must be a traumatic event in the past that caused this.

*thinks*

I remember. My best friendwho loves Muse played their albums for 8 hours straight while singing along. Let me tell you...she hit some high notes in the wrong places. That prolly cause my Muse dislike. Everytime I hear them, my mind automatically adds the voice of my friend singing along. Add to that that I wasn't too fond of the guy's voice already..and tada ...you have got a dislike for a good band.

Dave Matthews Band...

no idea why. maybe its cause when i actually listened to the radio years and years ago, they played their songs all the freakin time and they had like a couple hit songs at once, so it wasn't just one song but several. over and over and over again.

Hate leads to the darkside. Only artists I can hate are those that make shitty music, and I do mean shitty. Avril Lavigne, Pink and so on.

Band that actually make decent music, that might not be my style, still get a ton of respect from me. Metallica for example.

Voynich

Hmm..Muse is actually the only band I have this dislike for. Ohter bands I can listen to without liking them or can at least agree on the fact that they might be okay for some people. But not with Muse.

I dislike Led Zeppelin quite a bit. And despite the fact that they're catchy and providers of good tunes, I'm starting to hate just about every cheesy Finnish metal band who soaks their music with keyboard solos.

Avril Lavigne
I actually like Complicated, and that Happy Ending song. They are among my guilty pleasures (:laugh @ the colin)

Bands that are praised that I largely dislike?
Evanescence - I like a few of their songs, but most of their songs sound the same.

Nirvana - I like Pennyroyal Tea, and I dislike pretty much every other song they have ever done--a lot. I dislike them on principle, it seems, since I have never really sat down to read their lyrics. I think Smells Like Teen Spirit and every other magazine/TV show/mass-media music pundit proclaiming that they are one of the best and most important bands ever. *jkingler goes Val on ya* What-everrrrr :P

Dave Matthew's band is definately on my list, holy crap his voice is annoying. Another one that falls in that category, at least as a singer, (although the musical quality is debatable)--Alanis Morrisette. God damn her voice is downright terrible IMO. The first time I heard her I thought it was a joke. ;)

How come people are hating on Led Zep and the Doors? Two of my very favorites. I think you all just need to be in the right mood to enjoy their stuff, then it becomes amazing.

For me, two bands I dislike even though others think their music is good: Areosmith and U2. Just too poppy for my tastes. Not much passion in my dislike though.

The Sex Pistols

Now I know it's kinda controversial to claim that The Sex Pistols made decent music, but I cannot fucking stand them. Granted, I've never listened to an entire worth of material, but there's a reason why I haven't: they suck. Hard.

Now I agree with their cultural importance and I agree that many (perhaps even most) of the bands I love today would never have existed without them, but the fact remains that they were a fabricated marketing stunt that couldn't play for shit, exactly the thing Sex Pistols-fans everywhere criticise, say, MCR of being. Am I the only one who is irked at the blatant hypocrisy of this? Come to think of it, maybe it's militaristic Sex Pistols -fans I can't stand.

Although this is vaguely off topic, I should state that I DON'T hate Oasis in the least, which is weird because they made two good albums, then two goos singles, then shit for a decade now, act like they own the world, are complete pricks and ripped off the Beatles. Still, I think they're quite cool, in a rock-star kinda way.

And I don't like Rage either. I am confused as to whether this is because of their sound or because they've unwillingly become the soundtrack to fake cultural rebels everywhere. I swear to god, every time I see a rich white kid working on his degree in law or medicine or finance or history while mouthing the words "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me", the great things I associated with "Killing In The Name" dissapears a little.

What are you even talking about here? How are you even comparing The Sex Pistols to My Chemical Romance?

If you are going to say "fabricated marketing stunt that couldn't play for shit" then you might as well just call the entire punk movement past 1978 save for a couple of bands a fabricated marketing stunt.

That's not hipocrisy in the latest and what you said at the end doesn't even make sense. People can enjoy The Sex Pistols because they made some raw fun music(and let John Lydon go on to make the professional awesome music of P.I.L) and people can hate My Chemical Romance because it's not that they can't play instruments(which they can, by the way, and I don't even like them), it's that people don't like throaty screaming Three Days Graces voices over carbon copy Queen riffs.

I really think you oughta sit down and listen to Nevermind The Bollocks without going in expecting anything but a legendary punk album(which mostly means one of the first real punk albums, which mostly means THEY CANNOT PLAY INSTRUMENTS VERY WELL), but you probably can't do that without thinking of some new crackpot hipocrisy theory(HOW CAN PEOPLE HATE SLIPKNOT AND LIKE THE SEX PISTOLS??)

IF YOU BRING TODD INTO THIS YOU ARE A DEAD MAN, ARTY! I SWEAR TO GOD YOU'LL BLEED FORM YOUR EYES AND EARS AFER I'M DONE WITH YOU AND YOUR MAMA WILL CRY LIKE HER SON IS DEAD BECAUSE HE IS, FAG!
Your stated reasons for liking The Sex Pistols are completely valid, as are your stated reason for detesting MCR. However, my example had to do with people picking on bands because of traits that can easily be applied to their own band. It's only reasonable that if your favorite band arguably is a constructed marked gimmick that can't play their instruments very well, you should look for other grounds to bash other bands on, lest you'll seem a little, say, hypocritical.

To recap: Loving the Sex Pistols because they were raw fun while hating MCR because it's throaty screaming Three Days Graces voices over carbon copy Queen riffs is completely understandable. However, loving the Sex Pistols because they're raw fun while hating MCR because they're constructed and fake are a different matter altogether, as you're clearly applying traits that can easily be applied to your favorite band as a reasoning behind hating.

It's kinda like if I, a huge Radiohead fan, should bash Muse because they make such pretentious music and think they're so deep, if you get my drift.

FUCK TODD. HE DID THE ENDING THEME TO PEE WEE'S PLAYHOUSE AND IT'S REALLY SAD.

I still don't agree that they couldn't play instruments(Sid Vicious excluded and he was only on one song on the first album). The guitarist of the Sex Pistols was good enough to tour with Iggy Pop in 1992. He is a very good guitarist.

Also, calling The Sex Pistols a marketing gimmick might have made sense if the first album had been released in 1999. But they were the complete opposite in 1977. There were no bands like it, and it would have seemed that the Sex Pistols wouldn't make it past recording one song. (Most of the band) could not play their instruments very well, John Lydon didn't exactly have the most appealing yelping vocals, and they wrote "God Save The Queen"

If anything, Malcolm McClaren was ready for a complete trainwreck of a band.

What I think is your view on The Sex Pistols is warped because of the movement and bands it started. You are acting like it is a 2001 album, not a 1977 album.

But I can see why some people would be hypocrites for what you said(although I don't know people like that so I guess I'm lucky), but I honestly think you are too hard on the band. Especially considering you're such a Buzzcocks fan. It's mindboggling. It makes me think you only know the two hits.

YOU WISH

I am keenly aware of the movement The Sex Pistols Started and I am keenly aware that Buzzcocks was a product of that movement. I am also (although not quite as keenly) aware that former Sex Pistols members went on to make good music, and that some of them was rather decent even back then.

And you are also right that I'm obviously too hard on the band, just as you are too hard on The Mars Volta and moe is too hard on The Strokes (not to mention Led Zep). In fact, the title of this thread is just another way of saying "bands you are too hard on".

Whether they started a movement or not, and whether this happened in 1977 or 2001, the fact remains that their manager made up much (how much depends on the source) of The Sex Pistols act, clothes, name, instruments of choice and sound. The reason why he did this was that he wanted something the kids was going to love. Now, unlike most of the MD regulars, I don't think of this as an approach to music that inevitably leads to doom and shit (hell, in The Sex Pistols case it lead to Buzzcocks), but I do find it dumb when Sex Pistols-fans flame other fans for doing the same thing.

I also feel the need to point out the last sentence of my original post: Come to think of it, maybe it's militaristic Sex Pistols - fans I can't stand.
At the end of a post, "maybe" is a literary device for "probably". I admitted way back then that it was the present day fans that were the biggest problem I have with these guys, although I can't really feel their music.

As for my unfathomable liking of Buzzcocks, the answer is simply that their songs are catchier and the vocals are way better to my ears. They also play their adorable pop songs without trying anything fancy. I have also never met a Buzzcocks-fan (who wasn't a bigger Sex Pistols-fan) who acted like a pompous holier-than-thou asshole harrassing people for their taste in music, so that might've rubbed off on them too. (NOTE TO THE ONES WHO WILL PUT WORDS IN MY MOUTH: i AM NOT SAYING THAT ALL SEX PISTOLS FANS ARE LIKE THAT, I'M JUST SAYING THAT SOME, INDEED SOME CONSIDERABLE PERCENTAGE IN MY EXPERIENCE, ARE. PLEASE ASSUME I'M TALKING ABOUT SOMEONE ELSE.)

Either way, you wish.

Oasis is my favorite band. So what if they rip of the beatles they are just showing that they like them. And they are the last real rock stars left. They tell it like it is. I love them. But whatever. I hate Rage too. I don't like DMB, Radiohead, Nirvana, Travis, and some others that I'm too lazy to post up right now.

Not liking Rage because of their fans is kind of unfair. If you odn't like their sound, fair enough. But tha's like not being into Bob Marley because now-a-days most fans are fans because they're stoners.

Back on topic. I know he's not a band.. but I cannot listen to Immortal Technique. No matter how many people hype this cat up, I can't listen (or at least for that long) to his albums. Agreed on the Mars Volta. I also bought Frances the Mute from all the hype. Full price too.. major let down.

umm...other than that I would have to agree with everything else. Except Zeppelin. There were stages in my life where I liked them a lot more than I do now, but I have never and will never hate them.

Jimi Hendrix is waaaaaaaaay over rated too. Sure, he started the whole distortion lead movement, but that doesn't make him the best guitarist ever. His skills are shit and he explored in the wrong directions, imo of course. He was important, but shouldn't be included in best guitarist ever polls.

2)U2. Bono is a pretentious prat. Their music is inferior to even Britney Spears, and the edge is a shit name for a guitarist. It's like a rip-off of slash but fails.

3) Nirvana. Smells like teen spirit. Put a group of monkeys in a room for an hour with instruments and they'd come out with something like that. And that's their best song. The rest have serious tuning issues and are, well, not very good.

4) Oasis. I cannot stand the gallagers. And I don't care if I spelt it wrong either. One can't play guitar and the other can't sing. End of discussion.

5) Coldplay. I find radiohead boring. These guys don't stand a chance. Plus, they made a song called speed of sound which happens to be the SLOWEST SONG EVER! That should be illegal.

6) Trivium. Ok, this band has a couple of decent guitarists, but they are not and will never be the next Metallica. And no I will not start a frickin circle pit you stupid tosser (referring to their unhealthy obsession with schoolboy "metal" antics).

I really can't stand Hatebreed. Yeah, they've had a couple good songs, but Jamie Jasta needs to have his ass raped for saying grindcore sucked. Oh, yeah, and post Suicidal Tendencies era Suicidal Tendencies. I hated how they dressed like they were in the Crips.

I was gonna say Skrewdriver, but then I realized: They're a Nazi rock group. Therefore, decent music they don't make. :D

Also, even though I preach about old emo/post-hardcore bands, I can never get into most of them. Don't get me wrong, they rock! But, I only really like Jawbreaker, Rites of Spring and Cap'n Jazz. xD

In general, I hate mainstream music. :|

Wow, I hate uninformed cock suckers.

Emo is a derivite form of hardcore punk, so you can't say "emo and punk don't mix". Considering emo is a sub-genre of punk. Also, Fall Out Boy shouldn't even be considered punk. I'd consider Fall Out Boy to be nu-emo, crap, poopie, complete and utter shit, pop, pop-rock, the stuff that comes out of my ass, doo-doo, and generally the music of the Devil. Fuck you. =]

For more info, see Wikipedia (http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo).

WHat I still don't get to this day is why The Beatles struck it so big in America, and you guys didn't take to the infinitely superior Queen. Well, actually I do, it's the sexual ambiguity of their music videos, but still, why did you let that override your taste in good music?

that's because the beatles were basically done recording music by the time queen even became a band. if it wasn't for the beatles getting huge in america, other british bands would have had a tougher time becoming as big as they did.

I kinda like Coldplay but Oasis and Radiohead definitely suck. And I just have to ask why as far as The Beatles influence goes. When I listen to The Beatles' songs I don't see the connection at all between it and modern rock, not at all. If anything they sound more like they influenced pop music, considering most of their songs were that, pop songs, about as much substance as a Britney Spears song has nowadays.

Oh well, thank God you can't say there's much connection between them and Iron Maiden. :notrust

Pussycat Dolls.

I know they aren't a band but I get pissed off when I see their videos. "I don't need a man"...? This feminine supremacy shit needs to stop.

The only thing that really pisses me off about them is the fact that all of them (how many are there?) are on the cover and only one of them actually sings, which is the only part of the actual music that the whole group takes part in. The rest of them are just back up dancers, were they lapdancers or something before they got signed?

I know that Pussycat Dolls is not a group that has any decent music, but thats all I got. If any artist makes music that is enjoyable then I'm cool with it.

Funny though, I remember I stayed away from Naruto because of the fans. Ironically enough, I keep up with it now because of the fans. I probably wouldn't be as into it if it wasn't for this board and all the interesting characters it brings.

One artist I didn't name.. 2pac. Yeah, I said it. I simply cannot sit through an album. And I try. Oh, how I've tried. Can never get past two or three songs. Just last week on my way to school I popped an album in. My head started spinning, had to switch to, I think, Blackalicious. He works the exact opposite for me it seems than with most artists. :(

Updated opinion: I can truthfully say that I cannot passionately dislike any band that makes decent music. It's usually that I have either not given them thorough enough a listen or that they simply have yet to shine for me, but most bands have at least something going for them. Maybeh it's just my easy-to-hide open mindedness (yeah, Cata, shove that up your hairless, flacid arse!) that allows me to adapt to things pretty quickly. I've even become accustomed to core music and The Residents. And boy, the latter was fucking hard to get into.

But I do hate most of nu-metal and nu-emo, oh yes, I does. But then again, that can't really be seen as music, let alone decent.
