hmm, thats an interesting topic. they had an episode in BTVS that suggests the same thing, and I suppose that with either of them, you really do have to wonder about whether or not it's true...I don't believe it was a dream, but I think it's possible that it was...

I believe Sergio Leone was once reputed to have almost implied that the final shot of Once Upon A Time In America, of Noodles smiling in the opium den, could have been taken to mean that the entire film was simply a dream. The person to whom he was speaking was to perturbed by this, that they begged him to stop before he said any more...

There's not much to suggest that the whole series was some kind of dream of Shinji's, and it would be difficult to interpret it as such, as we don't really have the equivilent of Noodles' euphoric smile at any stage. On top of that, there was no opening scene to suggest a dream as there was in Leone's film. In other words, I doubt the director ever intended us to take it this way...

I have heard that some view the series as Shinji reviewing his life from within instrumentality, basing this interpretation on the curious fact that Shinji's tape player is always only playing modes 25 and 26, which they take this as pointing to the last two episodes #25 and #26. I'm not too sure what to make of this, as we are made aware in the series of facts that Shinji could not possibly be aware of, and indeed, who no one currently alive could have been aware of. If this is in fact the case, there would seem to be very little difference between a simple straightforward story and Shinji reviewing his life...

There is also no cronological hopping about as there was in Once Upon A Time In America, which might support either "dreamlike" interpretation, disregarding the brief interludes in episode #21, and some of the psychadelic sequences. Evangelion as a dream seems unsupported. I suppose it's possible, but if it is, then a lot of other works would be as well. You could even say Terminator was a dream of Reese's, or perhaps he imagined the whole scenario. Or O'Connor did. But I don't think we were meant to take these works in this way....

Of course Evangelion is a work of fiction, and in that sense could be viewed as a fabricated dream of its author, Hideaki Anno. Some have pointed out that Shinji is in many ways Anno's avatar in Evangelion, so you could on some level see the series as a "dream" given form by Anno to help him cope with his life. I believe in fact its creation did assist him in his recovery from depression...

He said it rivaled Berserk, Vagabond, 20thcb et.c. in quality (actually, he said it surpassed them, though I have a hard time actually comprehending that such an endeavour is possible). I'm looking forward to your resulting thread about the project. If it's as good people say, then I guess it's another series on my import list.
