Is the comedy in Naruto really that funny?

I suppose it depends on what you yourself find funny. Personally, I think Naruto can swing between being side-splittingly funny to just being a little weak or too immature for me to laugh at.

Eh, 3/10 in general. Doesn't make me guffaw or spit my soda out on the keyboard, but it's still there. It's a shounen manga, made for the minds of little japanese boys. I'll prefer reading seinen manga if I want humor.

I give it a 3/10, I did laugh one time since I started watching and it dose make me smile now and then, but overall not really that funny. You know threads I read about it here have made me laugh more than the anime itself.

There are parts that really entertain me and make me laugh. I'm an easy to entertain person, but plenty of things are funny to me: like characters making the (O_O) face, Jiraiya's introductions, Gai and Lee's interactions, Hidan and Kakuzu's non-teamwork, Killer Bee in general, Sai complementing Ino. So, an 8, silly moments are really funny to me. :P

Whats laughable at Kishimoto's attempts at being funny is that the stuff he doesn't intend to be jokes are what the fandom laughs at. Though Kakashi's 1000 years of Death will always be memorable. XD

Jiraiya is about as good as the comedy gets for me along with Karin, Suigetsu and Killer Bee. Things like the Ramen men is absolute fail

When I think of humour in anime/manga, I automatically think of a series such as Hajime no Ippo. I remember being shown some parts of Gintama, and thinking that they were hilarious, too.

Naruto, on the other hand, is normally plain weak in the comedy department. There are exceptions, though. I especially remember a certain scene from one of the very first episodes that made me reflexively snort in laughter:

Kakashi: Okay, let's begin with some introductions. Dreams for the future, hobbies...

Sasuke: My name is Uchiha Sasuke. I have an ambition. The resurrection of my clan, and...definitely to kill a certain man.

*Handful of seconds pass in complete silence as they all stare at him. Camera suddenly cuts to Naruto, wearing a suddenly disturbed expression.*

Naruto: He'd better not mean me...

I have no idea why, but that scene always gets me. It's far funnier in the actual anime than through my text, of course. There was also this scene that made me smirk:

Kankuro: That guy was Hyuga Neji, right? What kind of guy is he?

Naruto: I'm gonna kick his ass!

Kankuro: You're a funny guy...I like you.

Naruto: You're not funny...I don't like you.

*Abrupt silence*

Kankuro's inner monologue: Bastard...

There are also one or two other scenes that made me smile or chuckle slightly, but I can't recall all of them right now. Overall, however, the series just isn't anything special when it comes to comedy. This has become even more true for most of part two.

There are some characters I find hilarious like Gai, Lee, Sai, Deidara, Tobi, Suigetsu and Karin, but Naruto's goofyness is not funny at all, just pathetic and annoying knowing he's meant to change the world and blahblah.
And Sakura abusing Sai is not funny either. Let's beat socially clueless people instead of helping them, so funny. :zaru She needs to develop some sense of humor, damn !!! :pek She can beat Naruto as much as she wants though. :noworry

I think that because Naruto's grown up, and become more mature, the humour in general seems to have crawled into a whole and died.

Sometimes. One chapter, it could be funny. Another chapter, it seems plain ridiculous. Some of the stuff that might not have even been intended to be funny can be funnier than Kishi's actual attempts.

I think it's really funny, especially when you consider that comedy is not its main purpose. Naruto, Jiraiya, Gai, Sakura, Lee, and Kakashi are all funny. The 1000 years of pain scene was hilarious. Kakashi's "what did you say" comments to Gai are funny as are Gai's reactions. I always find Sakura beating the crap out of Naruto to be hilarious as well. The one part 2 moment that sticks out other than Sakura/Naruto scenes is the scene where Gai runs carrying Kakashi in a rather awkward position after his fight with Deidara. What was even funnier was Lee bending over and suggesting that Neji get on his back.

There's lots of great unintentional humor, although overall it's not the best manga for comedy.

Sai can be funny and so can Naruto. The only time I tuly lol'd several times was during the Immortals Arc, Kakuzu and Hidan were just a perfect married couple Akatsuki pair.
