Ripping Art

What is ripping art?

Ripping art means using an image someone else created (to make avatars or sigs for example), in whole or in part, without the artist's explicit permission. This applies both to art and "gfx" (which is often used for backgrounds), as well as other people's avatars or sigs.

So what happens if I find someone ripping my art?

If your art has been ripped, then first contact the offender, asking the offending piece to be removed. Save the email or pm you've used as "evidence" that you've done so, in case the offender tries to defend himself by saying that no such warning has been issued to him. If the offender does not remove the offending piece though, contact one of the mods, smods or admins or report on "this thread". A warning will be issued to the offender, and if said offender still does not comply, he or she will be issued a ban.

What if I find someone else's art ripped, without it being my own? Do I contact the offender?

No, contact the artist instead. It is up to the artist to ask for the removal of the offending piece. If you think someone's work has been ripped and knows that that artist specifically disapproves of the act, but don't know where to find the artist, you could always ask about it in the ripper's thread.

But everybody rips! We rip Kishimoto's work for example!

Quite so, but it is not up to the forum mods to play police in this matter. Rather, it is seen as a matter of etiquette. If the offended artist has Specifically asked you to remove his work, the only appropriate thing to do is to comply.

Okay, that's nice and all ... is there a "proper" way to use other people's artwork?

Well, more or less. Whenever you can, we suggest the following:

1. Ask permission from the artist whenever possible. This is especially easy in the case of fellow forum users, so do make the effort. That said, it's understandable if it's not always easy to contact the artist, but try whenever you can.

2. In any case, try to give credit whenever possible, by including the artist's name, or even better, by linking to his or her art site. Many artists (though not necessarily all) are content if they're properly credited.

3. Never, ever claim that a work is entirely "yours" if it frankly isn't. That'd be lying. If someone else took the time and effort to make that fanart or gfx that you're using, then you shouldn't claim it as your own. Doing so would more likely incur the wrath of the artists and mods.

Big Thanks to the Mod team(especially Mizura, for typing it)

I think it is a lot better if you can learn to draw the characters yourself, as in your own made up manga characters as there is nothing like saying to someone, "I drew that all by myself." It is a cool feeling to be able to say that. :)

well if you make the drawing from scratch yeah.... it's wrong if they steal your drawing and use it as their own but if you were to steal someone elses image and use it as a sig for exp. then there is no reason to get mad if someone steals that sig and uses it

Happens all the time. Lots of people do that. Then they take credit for it and say they made it.

Well it would just be stupid to show a rip on the same forum you got it.

That's why we need a code so it'll rap the sig in an anti rip watermark

Ripping is a hard matter too get controle over due too the fact that well, alot of people rip without knowing so. Like, 99% of all fanart is not allowed to be used in sigs if your not the creator, and don't ask him/her for permission. I've seen anywhere between 10-20 people here today that has a "ripped" stock in their signature.

My suggestion too everyone is too make their stuff from scratch, or be very carefull when using other peoples work in your own.

Not everyone's as good as the graphic artists are dear :P 90% of NF would be setless if they had to create it.

xD 90% of any site, even gfx sites would have that problem lol, but yeah, make sure you are allowed to use it before using it :p
