View Full Version : Adam Monroe: Misunderstood Super Badass

The season premier of Heroes was almost entirely what I expected. It was very enjoyable. The thing that put it over the top for me was a two second cameo by Dave Anders, the guy who plays Adam Monroe, villain of season 2 and by far my favorite character. He has no lines and just sort of smirks during a dream sequence in which all the heroes are dead. This gives me great expectations, those basically being that Adam will have a part in this season in one way or another.
Adam was pretty much the only good part of season 2. He's essentially a fallen hero, originally seeking money and fame in feudal Japan as a mercenary. Upon discovering his power (not being able to die) and with the assistance of the time warped Hiro, he becomes a great legend, the name of which I am blanking on. His motivation, outside of the obvious fame and fortune, is to also win the heart of the Japanese princess (or something like that) Yaeko, whom Hiro has taken an eye for as well (admittedly, he tries to restrain himself.) While its not exactly a big focus, Adam really does love Yaeko quite a bit.
Together, Adam and Hiro start doing tasks that will make Adam a legend in the future. Everything looks good, until Yaeko fucks everything up. While Adam really hasn't done anything wrong other than maybe being white, Yaeko decides she isn't really feeling Adam and makes a move on Hiro. After Hiro saves her from an explosion, she starts making out with him. Adam, who was worried they were dead finds them, and promptly overreacts, betraying his allies and capturing Hiro and Yaeko. Everything leads up to a borderline suicidal Adam and a reasonably upset Hiro duking it out.
This is what the fight looked like:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_LY7Kiu7sK34/SNiPl4sLqYI/AAAAAAAAADo/IxbBDVLY3T8/s1600-h/kensei-fighting-hiro.jpg
Annoyingly, Hiro wins. He has an emotional, poorly written goodbye scene with Yaeko which was probably intended to be romantic but was just boring and made me even angrier that Adam hadn't beheaded Hiro. After this, he returns to the future, where Adam, still alive and looking good, promptly kills his father, George Takai. Vengeful and embittered by his lost love, Adam attempts to destroy humanity via a virus. Hiro stops him, and since he can't just decapitate him, buries him alive, where he will die then reanimate for all eternity. Apparently, ruining his never-ending life once was not enough for Hiro.
The thing that really peeves me about all this is that Adam really didn't seem that evil. The transformation was all very sudden and even in the present day, he seemed like a pretty nice guy, if you take out his justified anger at the human race. If Hiro just hadn't messed up so badly none of that stuff would have happened and yet Hiro is played off to be this amazing self sacrificing legend who gave up the love of his life out of nobility. Neither was in the right, but Hiro was treated way too well in this case whereas Adam got a shaft of epic proportion. I get why Adam is pissed. Hiro deserved some kind of retribution for his actions. Whether he meant to or not Hiro seduced Yaeko, technically another man's woman and then Adam is somehow played off as in the wrong just because he got mad about it? Bullshit.
I hope Adam gives Hiro his comeuppance.
I imagine it like this:
Hiro comes back from France to get batteries for his magical tracking device. When he enters his office, he hears grunting noises from his spiny chair. Hiro says "Who's there?"
The chair slowly spins to face him. Hiro's sister is completely naked and is riding the pantless Adam, who simply says "Hello Carp... Looks like we're even now".
He then explains that he punched through the coffin and dug his way to freedom, ala Kill Bill Part 2. He also decides to become a good guy and joins the Bennett/Sylar team of awesome and sexy.
Yep... That's what's gonna happen.
Ah, knowing my luck he'll be dug up and freed only to die in a humiliating fashion and I will once again have cursed a well written character by declaring him to be my favorite.

I agree that Adam is an awesome character. It would be nice if we saw more of him, and if Claire managed to meet him, since he surely represents the pinnacle of what the regen power is capable of. At one stage I was hoping that his powers extended to cell death and growth control. This would allow him to create and destroy his cells at will, becoming something like Kimimaro who can grow more bones that he would not naturally have.
I was quite pleased with the actor who played the role, and I'd like to see the character of dam play an important part in someone's story, it doesn't have to be Hiro's.

You'd be a little unhinged as well if you'd lived over 300 years and had to watch everyone and everything you love die.
And no, he really never did get over Yaeko. In the 10 brides comic, he talks about going to Japan and marrying her granddaughter, who was "beautiful, but she was not Yaeko".
Also he was still pretty (justifiably) pissed at Hiro over that.

I don't consider Adam to be evil. He helped found the company and he did so with the hope that it would be used to "save the world". When Hiro went back to the past and saw that conversation between Adam and his father...I think Adam made a good choice. The world is rotten. Sometimes it's a good idea to just start over.

Unfortunately villains like Kaito, Hiro, Peter, Nathan, and Fat Cop interfered. :facepalm

I want to see him using a twin-sword fighting style. His name, Takezo, is probably written the same as Musashi, as in Myamoto Musashi, founder of the Nitenichi-Ryu twin sword fighting style.

Adam values the world more than he values the humans in it. I don't consider that to be an insane ideal at all.

Long read. I disagree, however, about most of your sentiments about Adam.
Nothing he has done is justified, and he doesn't even make for a very badass villain.
Firstly, justification: He tries to wipe out every living being. Why? Because a girl he liked made out with another guy. She wasn't with him. He wasn't promised her hand in marriage. She wasn't cheating on him, and she didn't do anything beyond kissing Hiro. Yet, this is enough for him to try and kill Hiro, and later, take it upon himself to kill everyone else? Yeah, real justified. More like "Somebody call the waaaaambulance".
Secondly, how is he a badass? He is introduced as a drunken coward who only finds the courage to do anything when he realized he can't die. He sucks, being outshone by a fat Asian guy with glasses, and the girl he likes decides she'd rather the fat nerd. He then goes ape shit, tries killing Hiro, which again he fails at doing, while looking like an over-emotional douche. He fails, and the girl he loves ditches him forever. Skip 400 years. He's done nothing of meaning during this time. Now, all of a sudden, he tries to destroy the world. Which he fails at, again. This time thwarted by a bunch of old people with powers like "Turn shit into gold". He is locked up in a cell, having to be saved by Peter. He finally gets out, with the help of (once again) another person. Tries again to destroy everything, and fails once more. His last failure ending with being locked in a coffin deep underground, apparently owned for all eternity.
Where is the justification in anything he did?
Where is this so-called badass he displayed?
Everything the man did was one joke after another. I can honestly say he was one of the worst things about Season 2.

He didn't married someone he married 10 different women. And of course if he didn't have his ability he would have died :lmao
Maria marries Adam Monroe in 1747 in Milan, Italy. She bears him two sons, but he learns he does not like children and leaves them with two bags of coin.
In 1672, Helene marries Adam Monroe. In 1692, she notices he does not age and runs away from their home in Diedenshausen, Germany, into the forest. Helene calls her husband a devil. Years later, Monroe hears that she had died in a nunnery.
Frederica marries Adam in 1782 after they meet in Versailles, near Paris, France. She always wears rouge and face powder. The lead in these cosmetics leads to her untimely death.
Adam returns to Japan in search of Yaeko's descendants, believing he could find fulfillment in winning the heart of Yaeko's great granddaughter. Adam and Yumi marry in 1784. He eventually grows bored and fakes his own death.
Adam and Angelica get married in 1787. The two remain wed for sixty-two years. As the years pass, Angelica tells people that Adam is her son, and then later her grandson.
Adam and Maria marry in 1864. Adam leaves to fight in the Civil War and his wife dies in a plantation fire.
Adam marries Theresa in 1958. He discovers that she never loved him when she and her lover shoot him twice in the chest and throw him off a cliff. Surviving, Adam swims back to shore and kills her and her lover the next morning.
Adam and Louisa marry in 1926. Louisa witnesses Adam regenerate after a violent mugging. In turn, she drinks herself to death, four months afterwards
His whole life has been fucking interesting :ohpek

Ehh, I really don't think he wanted to destroy humanity because oh noes, Hiro stole his girlfriend. =|
Look at what we see from a lot of the characters just a tad bit into the future. Peter and Claire practically have god complexes going on. Peter's okay with shooting his own brother. Now... multiply that amount of time by, oh, 20 or so, and you'd have a good picture of the world as Adam sees it.
Shit, guys. Humanity is not pretty. You try to live through war after war and stupid mistake after stupid mistake. You get into a horrible pattern where the people you think you care about again and again turn around and leave you out of horror, sometimes even try to murder you as well. You watch the ones that actually can accept that you're not quite what you look like slowly grow old and die.
Honestly, there's got to be a hell of a lot of repressed pain and perfectly justifiable bitter disenchantment about humanity built into that character. And he's certainly not someone who wants destruction for the sake of destruction, but has got some serious idealism behind his actions. Does that make him right? Not necessarily. Does it make him an interesting and very human character? Yes.
So yeah, he's my favourite as well.
And yeah, it's the Ozymandias thing, isn't it?

Rhae pretty much summed up my feelings. Adams perspective of the world is completely reasonable given the fact that he has lived 400 fucking years! Imagine what he has seen during that time.
Adam was married multiple times. His friends and family have died several times over. He has weathered it all and still remains. He probably lost his humanity somewhere along the way. Wouldn't you if you were in his place? I would probably begin to consider myself a god if I were in his shoes. I'm obviously not a human if I never age. Another side effect would be that I would value the world more than the creatures that live on it. And this seems to be Adam's primary motivation for unleashing the virus.

Everything the man did was one joke after another. I can honestly say he was one of the worst things about Season 2.
For one, the implication was that he was with her.
Think about what happened between the two of them. I will chart it out:
-Hiro tells Adam to change his entire personality with promises of legend and Yaeko's heart
-Adam does this
-Hiro promptly starts making out with Yaeko while Adam searches for them thinking they are dead
How would you react to this; Pat Hiro on the back and thank him for turning your life around?
Adam was just fine the way he was. He was a mercenary and lived his life as such. Had Hiro not been there, he'd probably have been extremely wealthy and successful. But Hiro did interfere and as a result we get the sociopath we see today. It wasn't just that Hiro made out with Yaeko, it was that he got Adam to make this huge life style change beforehand, then essentially spat in his face.
In terms of badassitude, I think you may have missed him manipulating Peter into breaking him out of prison and helping him to nearly release the virus. This is Peter, by far the most heroic character in the show (except for maybe Sylar, but that is only because he killed Alejandro and Isaac and shot Maya. If he had decapitated West, he would be my favorite.) Magnificent bastard indeed! I don't really think its fair to call him a coward. Not everyone is a borderline retard like Hiro or Peter. I guess Nathan's a coward too because he flew away from the Hatian and Bennett the Badass. If he's such a coward, why did he decide to take on Hiro in a sword fight with the full knowlage Hiro could potentially just freeze time and decapitate him. You could argue he knew Hiro wouldn't but lets face it: Hiro's an asshole and if it looked like Adam was going to win, he probably would have. Luckily for Hiro, being Asian and trained by George Takai apparently makes you a superior sword fighter than an actual trained mercenary.
In those 400 years, Adam founded the company. What more do you want from the guy, a cure for cancer? Rocket Propelled Dildo Boots? He's a fighter not a scientist.

Adam's "Hiro! You son of a B-" was epic :LOS
But I am really interested in Adam this season, his plans to wipe out huanity have failed, what will he do now? Join Hiro on a quest to save the world? Adam doesnt seem to think the world deserves saving.
And also, why is he "the key" ?
I just think Angela had Hiro dig Adam out to prevent the future of her dream, where the bad guys team up, by trying to play Adam to her hand.
Rhaella
10-07-2008, 10:54 PM
My guess is that since in her dream he teamed up with the bad guys (assuming they were bad - considering what Claire turns out to be, who knows anymore?), Angela thinks he might have some information regarding what's going on. Which is funny, considering that he's spent most of the last thirty years incapacitated.
Or maybe she just realizes that if anyone is going to be able to figure out what they're thinking, it's him?
Watching Angela vs. Adam mindgames would be highly entertaining though; that's for sure. XD
And I can't see Adam teaming up with Hiro, but I pray that they won't just throw him to the bad guys this time, because it doesn't really make sense. That's not the sort of future he'd seem to want unless being buried alive has driven him batshit insane.

This episode was a mixed bag for Adam
Pros
-He was absolutely hilarious and awesome while Hiro was threatening him.
-He pwned Hiro, the Japanese Nazi
-"I didn't know she was your wife" Adam is such a pimp
Cons
-Knox knocked him out.
-He's gonna be Arthur Petrelli's bitch.
I hope he doesn't die :cry
