View Full Version : Deep Love - Ayu no Monogatari (ie most depressing manga I've ever read)

I'm curious to see if anybody else has read it, and if so, what they thought about it, and if they've actually come across worse before. Despite the cheesy title, the manga might as well be labeled "Deep shit: where characters lead crappy lives and meet with horrible endings." Non-fantasy setting. You name it, this manga's somehow got it: prostitution, drugs, rape, suicide, AIDS...

Deep Love - Ayu no Monogatari (http://www.mangafox.com/page/manga/series/800/deep_love_ayu_no_monogatari/)

Warning: If there's any manga I'd rate mature/18+, this is definitely among them. In fact, most of you (regardless of age) will probably not want to read it, I certainly came out of it feeling depressed for a while. :sag

(This sums up my impression of it: :uwah )

ouch that was pretty tragic.

It wasn't the most depressing thing I've read I don't think, but definately up and around there.

Poor Ayu ;___; she pretty much wound up in a situation where she got stuck between the proverbial rock and hard place, the irony of the way she and Yoshiyuki effectively ended up switching fates in the end and the fact that as soon as she found a reason to live she got aids was pretty harsh ><

all in all that was entertaining but tragic

It's not the most depressing book I've read, but it's certainly the harshest manga I've read. When I was younger, I did read a comic about AIDS though. Have you actually read manga that are worse off? Though I did come across a pretty messed-up on school bullying if you're curious:

Life (http://www.mangafox.com/page/manga/series/1636/life/)

Betrayal by friends, suicidal tendencies, bullying and uh... classmates that do some other pretty shitty stuff against her. >_> Apparently it does eventually have a happy-ish ending though, unlike Deep Love.

The ending of Deep Love - Ayu no Monogatari is the definition of bittersweet. XP

Deep Love - Ayu no Monogatari has sequels if you're interested, just click on the author link. It took me a while to get to them after reading the first story, but it turns out that the rest isn't quite As harsh as the first (it's hard to beat the concentration of shitty stuff in Ayu no Monogatari :sag ).

hrm well on a purely manga side perhaps I've not read anything more depressing I suppose, comparably depressing might be more likely. I'd say something like Uncivilized Planet matched up on that count for me

I haven't read that one. Thanks for the heads up! :amuse

it's pretty good, perhaps ends in a more positive manner in the end but I found the general relationships between the main 3 characters and what they all went through depressing. I should warn it's rather more graphic in terms of its depictions of sex.

It had a mildly happy end despite her death so I couldn't feel all bad about it :sag

Did anyone read the others from the series?

The one about the puppy (who also appears in ayu's story) is so fucking sad ;_;

Yeah, and as they said, Pao's story (http://www.mangafox.com/page/manga/series/1983/deep_love_pao_no_monogatari/) (though for some reason it doesn't appear on Mangafox's search engines anymore).

Once Pao meets up with Ayu and co., there is a lot of rehash of Ayu no Monogatari though.

Alright, thanks! I'll check it out one day. :amuse

Yeah? The guy has no more father, no more grandma, no more friend since she died for his sake, and spent much of his life in the hospital. It's a perfect setting for a depressing lifestyle to come. :sag;

Wow her life get worse and worse....
She's dead. It can't get worse now. >_> (though even mini-Ayu gets through a lot of sh*t)

This manga Killed my view of japan as a happy place.
Why did you ever view Japan as a happy place? :blink

The one about the puppy (who also appears in ayu's story) is so fucking sad ;_;
Actually after the shock of the first story, the rest seemed comparatively mild to me. >_>;;

Japan is just like every other country on Earth. There are good times and bad times; happiness and sadness; jubilation and tragedy.

it was a good read
that not depressing for me since it depicted stuff that already happens in real life to unfortunate people that make bad decisions sometimes

smh @ bad parenting

Um... isn't that what's supposed to make it depressing? :blink Do you find sci-fi or fantasy settings more depressing or something?
