Well, 7 gates being a pretty extreme jutsu, you'd need a pretty hax ability of you own to counter it.

Like Susanoo impenetrable defense, a spare body hidden somewhere like Pain, Oro's quasi perpetual regeneration than can be active AFTER the blow hits or Madara's phasing ability that would negate any physical hit nor matter how fast/strong. Kakuzu's metal body defense possibly could be useful since there wouldn't be the elemental disavantage though it might not be enough still. Some very strong shielding technique could actually knock the fuck out Gai if you were preparing it beforehand since the uber speed would actually ADD to the damage taken when crushing in it...

But yeah, it'd be quite overkill against most, the downside being if more strong enemies arrives after the fight where the 7 gates have been used since Gai would be a sitting duck from the damages of it.

No they do not. They cause fire because of the friction caused by the speed. Also the gates do not seem to increase your strength at all. Lee with 5 gates could not even remove the armor of sand. I am pretty sure that Gai cannot punch through iron.

Use gates up to seven takes a bit of prep just like turning into a Bijuu for an experienced Jinchuuriki.

Kisame- GAI had to go to the 5th gate to beat 30%, i think 80% could handle 7 gate.

Itachi- Susano + Amaratsu combo= win.

Pein- Can not Die unless secret is know, GAI will run out of juice before Pein's secret is known.

Madara- Can instantly recooperte himself, and has that perfect space time ninjustu.

Jiraiya has that invisible barrier justu that will slice gai up.
