... Here's some more... the last part is KakuHidan, so I hope you don't mind... nothing explicit, of course... I don't feel like getting banned.


“Well?” Pein eyed the figure expectantly.
“… He is still useful to us,” Tobi admitted. “He is in shock now, but soon he will desire vengeance.”
“Then we ought to assign him a new partner.”
The mask bobbed. “I think you should integrate me into the Akatsuki; I will keep my eye on him, and dispose of him as needed.”
“… What are you up to?” It was more of a bemused afterthought, but Pein regretted it instantly as the bloody red eye within Tobi’s mask flashed with irritancy.
“You and I have different agendas,” the Uchiha growled. “I fully intend to keep it that way. You do not need to know.”
With that, Tobi spun about and glided off. It was getting late, and Zetsu would be worried if he did not return soon.
Well, he hadn’t expected to find… that. Tobi frowned a little as images came unbidden to his mind.
Deidara kneeling before the wooden altar that had once been a table upon which so many weapons of dead flesh had been forged under the watchful eyes and steady hands of Akasuna no Sasori. How Sasori’s steel wings shimmered with gold and silver under the lamp’s weak glow… Deidara running his fingers through the lifeless puppet’s hair… Deidara’s eyes… his eyes…
It had been awhile since he’d seen eyes like that. Itachi and Pein had eyes filled with cold hate, and they both thought that such eyes were the greatest, but Tobi knew better.
Eyes filled with the burning hatred of insanity, tempered only by time… these were the eyes Deidara might possess.
And he would be the smithy, heating and cooling Deidara’s wrath as needed, subtly reminding him of Sasori’s death and his killers, then acting as if it was nothing- which of course, it was, but Tobi could not pass up this opportunity.
Deidara was strong, but he could be powerful beyond comprehension, so long as the memory of Sasori’s body floating in the water remained burned into his subconscious.

“It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter enough. I want this.”
Sasori’s blank eyes regarded him, confusion marring his features. “What are you talking about, Brat?”
“You can’t deny me this. I want this.”
The redhead blinked. “I’d thought we settled this matter.” He did not like that Deidara was no longer using his quirky style of speech. He was starting to miss being called ‘Danna.’ But then, Sasori liked things steady and long-lasting, and he didn’t cope well with sudden change. Deidara was, therefore, probably the worst thing that had ever happened to him.
Or the best…
No.
“Damn it, Sasori, this will never… be finished!”
“You’re being unreasonable.”
“And you’re being a resolute ass!”
“I was under the impression that steadfastness was your forte.”
“Fuck you!”
Sasori resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Deidara had been unbearable these past few days, his constant snarls and curses making his fingers twitch with the urge to throttle that slender throat. “You want this resolved? Fine, then. Tell me how we can resolve this.”
He should have seen the blow coming. He really should have. The Iwa terrorist was slowly going mad under the strain of their partnership.
But Sasori seemed very surprised when something sent him hurtling through the air. His back smashed against an old tree, and he heard the distinct crack of split wood- his wood.
“Damn it, Deidara!” he snapped. “Now I need a new torso!”
“Oh, I feel so bad, un…” Deidara began to sneer at him, but froze in shock mid-step.
“… What?” Sasori grunted, wriggling against the tree. He was stuck, his wing blades having lodged themselves within the tree trunk.
“… Why can’t you make a puppet that can feel?”



Kakuzu slid the accounts back into his filing cabinet then locked it absentmindedly.
Sasori was dead.
Sasori was the closest thing to a friend that Kakuzu had ever been blessed with. The Suna shinobi often provided him with body parts for medical use, and in times of financial trouble, would use his talent to create instruments of great worth that Kakuzu’s underlings sold for profit. They had been in the Akatsuki longer than most- not even Zetsu or Kisame had been around when Sasori first arrived in his blood spattered robes, the Sandaime Kazekage slung over his small shoulder.
It bothered him more than a little that Sasori, eternally young, undying Sasori, was as lifeless as the Ichibi Jinchuuriki.
An oxymoron, he thought. Sasori would have laughed.
Kakuzu yanked off his cloak and sat down upon his bed, watching the violet-eyed man pray and wondering, for if Sasori was not so everlasting as he had always claimed… how long did they have? How long before Hidan found the death he so desired, or someone got lucky and managed to destroy all five of his hearts?
“-ntra pax, scorpio de ruber harena.” Hidan slit his wrist over a bowl and drained his blood into it, then placed a candle in its center and set the wick aflame. “Amen,” he muttered, and pressed his lips to his rosary.
“Done?” Kakuzu pointed at him.
“Almost, can’t you wait for one fucking minute?” Hidan lifted the bowl up and placed it on Kakuzu’s desk. The Falls shinobi growled. “Fuck off; I don’t want it knocked over.”
Kakuzu eyed Hidan’s back as the Jashinist stared into the candlelight, lost in thought. That wouldn’t do. “Ahem…”
“What…? Oh…” Hidan chuckled humorlessly and then stripped without ceremony, hopping into bed and pulling eagerly at Kakuzu’s shirt. “It should be burnt out by morning.”
“I’ll never understand these wacky ceremonies of yours.”
“Well, you’re starting to pick up the language, and that’s something,” Hidan snuggled up to him. “There may be hope for you after all.”
“Are you going to start preaching here, too?” Kakuzu said dryly.
Hidan reached up and pulled loose his partner’s mask. “No. This has its own sanctity.” Even as he spoke, his burning eyes darkened unhappily. “I wish you would convert, though…”
“Hmm… we’ll see…” Under normal circumstances, Kakuzu would never say such a thing, but he was shaken… and apparently, so was his lover.
“Jashin does not accept non-believers, Kakuzu…” Hidan whispered uneasily.
“I suppose it’s a good thing that you have an eternity to try and convert me, then,” Kakuzu replied, and shifted so he could press his lips to Hidan’s.
They made love that night, as they always did, but as Kakuzu lay beside Hidan, mind hazy with his afterglow, he couldn’t help but wonder how Sasori’s death had changed them. There was less carnal lust and more desperation between them, and when Hidan curled against his back and fell into sleep, he found himself thanking Sasori with all five of his hearts.
Hidan never stayed after sex.


-ntra pax, scorpio de ruber harena… Amen: Hidan is praying in Latin. The whole statement would be, ‘rest in peace, scorpion of the red sand… ’ but I cut it off. The whole word for ‘in’ is ‘intra.’ I don’t think I did this right, but whatever…

For months, Deidara saw very little of Sasori. During missions, he remained cocooned within Hiruko, while at night, he would pat Deidara’s head gently, like he was a dog, and slip into their workshop. Sasori’s articulation skills became non-existent; Deidara was always the one to initiate conversation, and the redhead’s responses were little more than wordless murmurs to show his partner he was listening.
And he read. He read as if he had an insatiable thirst for printed kanji, as if he knew no other purpose in life. For the first time, Sasori neglected his puppets, his tools, his poisonous pets- everything, for whatever he sought in those tombs clearly took prevalence over all else.
Deidara tapped on Hidan and Kakuzu’s door. Hidan had lent him a book on the precepts of Jashin to pass the time, and Deidara finished it in two days, but the white-haired priest and his partner were called off, and he had not returned it.
To his surprise, Sasori answered the door.
“Oh, Brat… come in, then.”
It was the most Deidara had heard from him in three weeks. The blonde scowled, and was about to point this out to his partner, when Kakuzu’s voice reached his ears.
“What about this one?”
Sasori ambled into the room and crouched on the floor, eyeing a profile in one of Kakuzu’s many bingo books. “… No… incompatible.”
“What’s going on?”
The two stared up at Deidara, who glared at them both.
“Well? Spill it; what are you doing, un?”
“You didn’t tell him?” Deidara blinked. Hidan was lying on his back, flipping through another bingo book. “Fuck, Twiggy-san, when did you turn into a space cadet?” he drawled. “Maybe this guy? … Nah, too ugly.”
“You have strange tastes…” Kakuzu said without looking at his team mate.
“Hello?” Deidara waved his free hand in front of Sasori’s face, and a tongue flicked out and licked the puppeteer’s eye.
“… That’s disgusting, Brat…” Sasori’s lips twisted in revulsion. “For your information, we are searching for a suitable candidate for my next project.”
“A new puppet?” Deidara plopped down to the floor, his hair bouncing around his face.
“Hey, blondie- where’s the book I gave you?”
Kakuzu took the book from Deidara’s clutch and chucked it at Hidan’s face. “Shut up,” he growled over the string of curses.
“Why didn’t you ask me for help, un?” Deidara had to raise his voice, because Hidan was getting progressively louder.
“I thought you said you wanted time to refine C-3?” Sasori cocked his head to one side, then scooted back as Hidan soared through the air and wrapped his hands around Kakuzu’s throat.
“I finished that weeks ago!” Deidara shouted above the sound of snarling and choking.
“All right then; I’m looking for a Suna shinobi with an unusual set of jutsu to complement my prize!”
Deidara picked up several books and stood up. “Let’s do this somewhere else, then!”
Sasori scrambled to his feet and rushed after the Iwa nin, snapping the door shut in time to hear a nasty smacking sound as Hidan’s body made contact with the wall.

Zetsu was sleeping when Tobi returned from his meeting with Leader-sama… but Zetsu was awake.
“Hello, Tobi…” he whispered, gesturing at his darker side. “We must not wake him up.”
Tobi nodded and crept over to his bed, which stood only a few feet from Zetsu’s. “Deidara-senpai won’t come out, but Leader-sama wants him to stay,” he breathed gently.
“Are you in the Akatsuki, then?” Zetsu pressed, far more interested in the boy’s fate than that of the Tsuchi dandelion.
“Yes. Leader-sama has assigned me to be Sasori-san’s replacement.”
Sasori’s… replacement? “Then, you have been partnered with Deidara?”
“Yes.”
Silence filled the room. Tobi turned on his side and took off his mask, so that his back was all Zetsu could see from his awkward position.
“… Good night, Tobi.”
“Good night, Zetsu-san.”

Sasori had found his target.
Unfortunately they were most certainly not easy prey, and he would have to wait until Leader-sama gave the go ahead to strike.
But then, Sabaku no Gaara was needed for other things.
In the meantime, Sasori had other things to attend to, and as before, Deidara scarcely saw him about.
Yet again, it was merely by chance that he ran into Sasori as he travelled to a riverbed in search of new materials.
“-ind any?” Sasori’s voice wafted to him upon the wind.
“Gomen, Sasori-san,” Zetsu said.
“Give us some more time, damn it!” Zetsu snarled.
“Don’t be rude,” Zetsu chided.
Deidara followed the voices upstream to find Sasori, Zetsu, and a slumbering Tobi on the shore of the river’s sharp bend.
“Ah, the dandelion!” Zetsu sneered.
Sasori’s lips turned up at the corners, and he creaked a little as his body shuddered with a chuckle. “Afternoon, Brat.”
“What are you doing out here, un?”
“Ah-“
“Tobi needs to train, and-“
“Sasori-san asked us to find several non-native plants, so-“
“He sought us out,” the two finished.
“What is it you’re doing, Sasori-danna?” Deidara stared at his partner incredulously. “Why aren’t you telling me anything, un?”
“Baka; I don’t have to tell you my every move.” Sasori then turned back to the cannibal. “When can I expect them, then?”
“A week at most.”
“We’ve got other things to do.”
“Please pardon the delay.”
The dark figure on the ground stirred. “Tobi… isha good boy…”

Neither of them could stand absolute silence. In the end, it was Itachi, not Kisame, who eventually broke down and bought a fish tank, so that the hum of the generator would soothe their nerves.
“… Kisame-san.”
“Mmm?”
“… I do not understand how Sasori-san lost.”
“Hmm… well, we weren’t there.”
“…”
“…”
“… And?”
“Nope. That’s all I’ve got.”
“…”
“Itachi-san?”
“Sasori-san was not weak. His hatred was strong. He was strong. But the ones he fought…”
“…”
“They were weak. Their hatred was weak.”
“… Maybe Sasori’s hatred was strong, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have weaknesses, Itachi-san.”
“It should have been enough.”
“Not everyone’s strength stems from hatred, Itachi-san.”
“…”
“Kogata tensai?”
“You are not weak.”
“… A-arigatou…”
“Does your strength come from hatred?”
“…”
“Kisame-san.”
“I don’t know.”
“… Kisame-san…”
“Hmm?”
“I can’t see.”
Kisame sat up sharply. “You can’t-”
“I feel so blind… go to sleep.”
But that night, they both remained wide awake, listening to the generator whirl away. Kisame wondered if Itachi felt like one of those pretty little fish; they were given the fins to swim in deep, cool pools, yet remained trapped within the glass tank.

“Oi! Sasori-san! Deidara-kun!”
Kisame grinned widely at the two artists below him. He waved, and then sprinted down the sand dune to their side, his pointed teeth revealed.
“You’re back from the West, then,” Sasori said blandly.
“Yup,” Kisame let out a bark. “You should have seen Itachi-san when he fell ill. I swear to the gods I broke three ribs trying not to laugh at him.”
At this, Deidara’s mood lightened. Sure, Itachi was around again, but Kisame was always good company.
“Actually,” Kisame continued, sobering up almost instantly, “Leader-sama called us back. He says it’s time to start up the hunt again.”
Kisame could not have made them happier, unless he’d suddenly announced that Itachi had died.
“We’re going after the Ichibi?” A light appeared in Sasori’s normally passive eyes.
“Leader-sama told me to tell you to that you’re to change course instantly, and head to Sunagakure.”
“Finally!” Deidara whooped and leaped into the air. “It’s about damn time we started doing something interesting, un!”
“Stop jumping around like Tobi, Brat.” Sasori growled, Hiruko’s body muffling his voice.
“Kisame-san.”
Itachi had appeared next to the swordsman, his skin far paler than it had been the last time they’d met. He was almost sheet-white, and Deidara bit his lip in sudden realization.
“We must head towards Kasen,” Itachi pointed out, his voice possessing a rough edge.
Kisame shrugged. “All right. We’ll see you in a few days, then.”
With that, the odd pair took off, headed east. Deidara waited until they were out of earshot before he knocked on Hiruko’s head, his bright blue eye dancing.
“Itachi-teme looked like he was going to vomit… and he sounded like he already has, un.”
“… You’re a horrible, vindictive brat, you know that, Dei?”
“Oh, but you still love me, Sasori-danna.”
Sasori’s silence was enough to make the blonde cheer again.



“You replaced Sasori-san with Tobi?” Konan repeated.
“Yes.”
“… Tobi?”
“Yes.”
“… Deidara-kun will not be happy.”
Pein eyed his long-lasting partner bemusedly. “That’s the idea.”
The woman examined her upturned palm, letting small sheets of paper lift from her and form little white bats. “If that is what is best for Akatsuki.”
“Konan-chan.”
She looked up, meeting his hateful eyes with her own glassy gaze. “What is it God wishes from his angel?”
“Come with me,” he said. “Come with me.”
And so she did.

“Now all we have to do is take care of Itachi-teme’s Jinchuuriki and then you can make your new puppet, Sasori no Danna.”
Sasori’s voice drifted out from Hiruko. “Indeed…”
“Un…” Deidara began, gently seating himself on the dead teenager. “Will you tell me what you’ve been up to these past- what, has it been six months?”
“Yes.” Sasori sighed. “It was going to be a surprise, but it’s been awful, making you wait all this time…”
Deidara smiled.
“I needed a Suna shinobi, one with a body and chakra signature similar to mine before I…” Deidara’s smile vanished, and Sasori hastily moved on. “I also wanted someone with an unusual jutsu, and using his in conjunction with the Sandaime… well, it would be an excellent combination.”
The terrorist was extremely confused now. “But you’ve never needed so much preparation to make a puppet before; what’s so special about this, un?”
“Because the next puppet will be my greatest creation, my finest achievement,” Sasori’s hushed words were barely to be heard through Hiruko’s hulking frame. “I will make the first puppet that shall be both as durable as I am now, and as capable of eating, sleeping, and feeling as you.”
Deidara’s eye drifted down to the face of the Godaime. Of course. The defensive techniques would protect Sasori from harm, enabling him to keep the sensory organs and all other systems he desired intact… the plants must be to treat dead or damaged cell tissue…
“You would… feel…” he croaked.
“Only for you.”
And then there was a terrible sound of cracking stone, and within twenty four hours, Deidara’s world fell apart.
