View Full Version : Books/movies that would make a great manga or anime

Every once in a while while I'm reading a novel or watching a movie I start thinking of how it would be as a manga/anime, most I think would be horrible, but a few seem like they were made for it. The two that most stand out in my mind are the series His Dark materials (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass) ans Stephen Kings "The Dark Tower." I was wondering if any of you agree with me about those series, or have some other stories you think would make a good manga/anime.

I can totally see His Dark Materials as an anime. They could really make it into a dark and meaningful series, if done by the right people. And to see that final scene with Coulter and what's his name. Yeah, that would be kinda cool to see. :amuse

I can't agree with you on Dark Tower just yet, seeing as I've only read The Gunslinger but it seems like potential anime-style material.

I'd like to add Ender's Game/Ender's Shadow. Not necessarily the entire octet as a series but rather just the one/two book(s). As a series or a movie, I wouldn't mind to see. I've always thought the graphics that some animators use (like that from Tekhnolyze or Last Exile, etc.) would be astounding for the Battle School and Eros.

The Wizard of Oz.

Seriously.

Think about it... it's like the first magical girl anime. Strange young girl finds herself transported to a fantastic new world / situation with her small, cute furry companion. Meanwhile, she immediately does something to upset the balance of power in the world, and has to use her newfound abilities / responsibilities to put the world back the way it should be.

Of course, there is a group of strange companions to help her out, including an anthropomorphic creature. She's up against a great and terrible power, who sends hoards of evil minions to destroy her, but ultimately fails. Finally, she reaches her goal and has to learn that the powe was within her all along.

Honestly, am I talking about the Wizard of Oz, Inuyasha, Escaflowne or Cardcaptor Sakura?

I would LOVE to see someone turn Oz into a bitchin' anime.

The Dragonlance and Sovereign Stone series would both make great manga or anime. Full of action, romance, betrayal, and comedy. One series has forgotten gods and dragons, a world of rivals(racists), and the Majere brothers. The second is just as cool, but the armor of a few of the characters shows up in great ways, one erupts into flames which forms into the armor, and another's armor flows over him like water.

Ender's Game - Card

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoniex would be a good AnimeJust the fifth one?

And I'm beginning to think the Otherland series by Tad Williams series could be made into a beautiful anime too. Thinking of the multiple worlds makes me want to read it again.

And all you guys mentioning that Otori trilogy makes me want to pick it up...

Harry Potter would make a good anime, I've seen some people's anime-style fanart of the books on various sites. One thing wrong would be the British style of humour and things, though.

I'm writing a novel right now even if I'm a kid...Well I hope it gets published but it's already a manga like story.....so when it's published(The percentage would probably 1%) I hope I get to make an anime out of it!

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Beowolf would make a sweet anime miniseries.

^Beowulf WOULD rock!

Anyway, I think Anne Rice's 'Vampire Chronicles' (Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, etc...) would be an AWESOME anime movie/series...

And just about anything fantasy-wise...I also think Jacqueline Carey's 'Kushiel's Dart Trilogy' would be an awesome anime...it's really the only way they COULD make those books into some other media with all the goings-on and whatnot (anyone who's read those books would know what I was talking about, hehe...*wink wink*).

NeophyteNihilist

Hopefully, if Beowolf was ever made into an anime series, the creaters would incorporate some of the characterization of John Gardner's novel Grendel.

I'd kinda like to see Perdido Street Station by China Miéville as either a manga or an anime movie. Not sure about the length but maybe even a series.

I think The Call of Cthulhu would make a good manga/comic. Herbert West: Reanimator would be a good anime. A Shadow over Innsmouth would be one hell of a manga. At the Mountains of Madness would be an amazing manga.
Really, any of just about any of Lovecraft's stories would be good anime of manga.

I think The Wind on Fire trilogy by William Nicholson, would make a great anime. And possibly a good manga, too.

David Gemmells books. All of them.

His characters are always multi-faceted, there's heroes that defeat handfuls of men with ease, and so much great action and drama.

I could also gor for a manga of Terry Pratchetts Discworld books.

I think Wheel of Time would be too complex for a manga or anime, but who knows.

But I think The Last of the Renshai would be absolutely perfect for both. It would be similar to Rurouni Kenshin Trust and Betrayal IMO.

I'd like to see how an author could describe the battles in Naruto. You know, give us specific emotions that a character's feeling. Then there are potential pairings; word characterization can be more effective than visual most of the time. That'd interest me some.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.
It would have to be seriously simplified, but, then again, that could be a very good thing. There is entirely too much filler in the series anyways :-P

I think if they just stuck to the crucial parts (character developing scenes, pertinent backstory, major action scenes, etc.) that it could be as good as the books are, and in the right hands (like the team who did Samurai X), it could be much better.

*Resurrected*

I'm not quite sure why you chose to put 'movies' in the title -- considering what this forum deals with -- so I'm only going to address this from the perspective of books.

he two that most stand out in my mind are the series His Dark materials (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass)

That would work very well in the right hands. I imagine it being highly reminiscent of something such as Spirited Away.

I don't share the enthusiasm that some of the posters here have for an Ender's Game adaptation; I just can't imagine it being as powerful in the anime medium. Same goes for Miéville's Perdido Street Station, which I was also surprised to see mentioned (a brilliant book that far surpasses Card's work, in my opinion). I suppose it would at least be interesting to see attempts to adapt those two books for anime, though. Ender's Game would be a far safer bet out of the two.

Tales of the Otori is a brilliant nomination for an anime adaptation. I fully agree with this one. If you gave this to (for example) the people who did the Rurouni Kenshin Trust/Betrayal OVAs, it would be very special indeed.

This might seem strange, but I think "The Woman in White" by Wilkie Collins would make a great anime miniseries.

Very interesting suggestion. I would never have thought of this for an anime series. I can imagine it playing out like a Victorian era Monster -- it would have the same sort of long length and eerie tone, and the constant suspense and twists also invite comparisons. Lovely book, anyway.

I nominate:

Broken Sky, by Chris Wooding.
Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman.
The Chronicles of Amber, by Roger Zelazny.

Matthew Stover's Heroes Die would also work pretty damn well as a manga, if it had the benefit of an artist who could conjure up that dark and beautiful Berserk-esque style.

That's some necro-post there, Dream Brother. I guess you're off the hook 'cause you're a mod?

Anyway, I'm gonna go with the crowd and say Discworld. Really, any one of them would work.

I also agree that Wizard of Oz would make a great anime.

And for my own contribution, I nominate a sci-fi classic: Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers. I see it with a kind of Cowboy Beebop style, sorta serious, but with some elements of comedy.

But really, I just want to see those awesome battle suits in action. I was disappointed they were cut from the movie in favor of tits and football.

If you have a point to make or the subject is one that could provoke discussion then I see no problem with necro-ing threads in the LD at any rate. Don't think that would work in most other sections though.

I think Gibson's Neuromancer, with it's buckets and buckets of imagery, would work well as an anime/manga. It has already had such a lot of influence on the anime/manga industry, and, in turn, has been influenced so much by Japanese culture in the first place that it really makes sense. I would love to see Naoki Urasawa take a crack at that book actually.

Redwall (whole series)
I Am Legend

Ghostbusters
Juno
Angel (its a show but whatever)
Law & Order (show, but whatever)
I,Robot
Casino Royal
Jumper
Underworld
Snatch

I am sure I will have more.

Twilight all the way!! :wtf

And I would like The Count of Monte Cristo to be done again. But this time they should stick to the time-line and NOT focus on Albert (they have reuined his character!). The Count is the best character that I have ever come across in the literature, he should be the focus. (and no yaoi please :D: )
