Because these guys rock, rock well and rock hard, yet get no recognition for their brilliance. Think CSN&Y, but funnier and crazier.

First of all, if you like The Decemberists, The Mountain Goats, The Microphones, Of Montreal, The Arcade Fire and The Jolly Rogers (:P) You will dig these lads.

NHM fashion a brand of good old folky, happy-go-lucky, psychadellic, alt pop/rock, indie rock, lo-fi, neo-progressive crazy and fun music. The worst part of finding these guys out was finding out they broke up =/. A first got On An Aeroplane over the sea thanks to a friends Rec, and I loved it.
Styles

In the Airplane Over the Sea is a charming, unqiqu and magical little gem. Its strange, abstarct, reaching hights and simple fun aspect of it makes it so easily catchy and loveable. With only 10 tracks, it still a "listen to the entire cd" experince. Every song just floats in the air, without a single flaw and it all blends to make a perfect album.

The album moves from acoustic instrumentiation, to marchign bad trumptes, to garage rock, to folk rock with such ease. The sogns are simple, straightforward, but have an interesting approach and are exptionally well written (Jeff is an amazing singer/songwriter).

Granted the band (along with guests musicains) are the best technical players you will come acroos, but they all work as a cohesive entity and sound so good with each other. The album has such a eclectic and odd sound to it, (always a plus) and so, everytime you listen to it, you gain a new appreciation to the band and its music.

Guitarist/songwriter Jeff Mangum should be credited for his vision, craftsmanship, and successful merging of orchestration, garage rock, and acoustic numbers.

The lyrics are equally abstract. They sound like fragments of thoughts, scattered about, like bedroom poetry-yet they never sound pretentious or overly abstract. Even if you don't know exactly what they mean, you'll get the gist of what was said.

NHM is generally hated due to Jeff's Vocals, which is ridiclous. This s rock and roll! You cant expect the vocalists to be opera singers. they are suposed to be weird, odd, catchy and a bit cracked on the edges. Jeff's voice contains nad carries so much emotions and paints such a vivid image along with the lyrics.

I've always heard that NMH was very special, but I never had a chance to listen to them. Care to PM me In The Airplane Over The Sea? Thanks again, Moe. Always the one to start great topics. :)

I've always felt that The Olivia Tremor Control were a better band, but it takes nothing away from my appreciation and sincere love for Mangum's singular brilliance.

His voice is endearing and pure. :edu
