Hi guys, I'm sorry that I didn't reply earlier, but I've been thinking about a new topic. Thanks alot Curry!:wtf

I have mainly been thinking about 'Bokeh' and 'Shadows and Light'. I feel the latter will bring more entries in, but what are your thoughts?

vervex

What is Bokeh?

Shadows and lights seem fine.

What's Bokeh? O:

Bokeh (derived from Japanese bokeaji ボケ味, "blur") is a photographic term referring to the appearance of out-of-focus areas in an image produced by a camera lens.[1] Different lens bokeh produces different aesthetic qualities in out-of-focus backgrounds, which are often used to reduce distractions and emphasize the primary subject.

It's basically making the background blurry.:P

I hope you got it, but it seems vervex already put up 'Shadows and Light'. Which were my first choice anyway!:amuse

Are you happy with it?:)

I can't do Bokeh with my lences unless I select the focus option, and that's pretty much the only blurry effect my *cough* very advanced *cough* camera can do :sag

Shadows and Lights seemed more general to me :P

Not every camera can do it (mine can't), so yeah, let's not choose such topics since we don't have many regulars yet =)

so exaclty how much can i manipulate on my photo? like for example: can i take out an object i dont like that i was not able to move in real life?

Curry
07-27-2008, 09:23 AM
..I think your photo was manipulated in Photoshop a bit too much.

whamslam3
07-27-2008, 07:47 PM
i rly didnt do anythin to it. all i did was duplicate and set to overlay at 50% because the quality of the photo was low. and thats all i did to it i swear. the rest was just how it turned out when i took the pic honest.

mow

1. it's not "overly manipulated:.
2. even if you did "manipulate" wham id still fucking vote for you becuase at least you try to incorporate your vision regardless of the limitation set by "rules". it's a load of horseshit really, so go you.

Curry

Well honestly I thought you played with the light settings in Photoshop =) But if you're saying you didn't, then it's okay =)

okay, I want to enter this too. So, are we allowed to edit the photos in any way? Like, adjustment layers? If not, what about making it HDR? - HDR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_imaging)

chrisp
07-28-2008, 09:55 PM
Yes, I would say that using the HDRI technique is allowed, but vervex is in charge here.

Ajustment layers are also acceptable if I remember correctly, but there's a limit.

Curry
07-29-2008, 08:05 AM
Hey guys, just please remember that this contest is about photography, not Photoshop skills. It's stupid to take a photo that looks nice only if you edit it in Photoshop. We're allowed to use only the basic features so that we can disregard the difference between our, mostly cheap, cameras. So you can for example turn the pic into B&W or sepia.

Producing one photo from a set of a couple of them is too much for me. I don't want Potf to turn into such kind of contest when you spend more time on editing the photo than on taking it. :headscrat

chrisp
07-29-2008, 08:51 AM
You sound just like me Curry!:amuse

I completely agree with you, but didn't we have a discussion about this where we concluded that some ajustment layers were allowed?

mow

i still cant understand why you people treat PS like it's a dirty thing. you sound like old mums telling their kids that masturbation is gonna send them to hell

People have been developing films since film existed. they did this in labs. later on, in the future, they did it digitally. as long as you use the medium at hand to complete the piece of art that you have envisioned in your mind intially, why the hell are you so opposed to it?

using ps on photo =/= no effort capturing the image/dreaming the image. it goes hand in hand. Becuase that's just retarded and the equivalent of saying using the holga's unique light features mean your photo has no content or purpose whatsoever or using developing techniques on your film means it's not a piece of art and artificial.

so what if the yguy added some shadows to his photo? he hand a concept, he attempted to make it realistic with the tools he had at hand. how different is this from people using sepia setting in a digital camera? that is manipulation you know. I mean the subject it's self is surely not in sepia mode. or using a mirror to increase light on a face in aa portrait shot. you added something that wasnt there. you manipulated your surroundings. ITS NOT A DIRTY WORD. :rolleyes

pointless in this place, but 2 cents in a bucket

i just want to make clear that alli did was duplicate my photo one time and set that layer to overlay at 50% and thats it.
i did not add or take away anything in my photo.

pearl_master

well just entered my first on in a little while, i have been kinda absent from the site recently.

i say this is a photography competetion not a photomanipulation competetion. minor adjustments and colour changes are exceptable. either way im not bothered.

vervex

@moe
There's nothing wrong with working with the colors, the saturation, the contrasts, sharpening and blurring... but going farther than that is modying a photo, which is falls into the cathegory of graphic work, photomanipulation. We want this contest to be exclusive to photography, just as SkotW is exclusive to drawing and sketches, and SotW to signatures and graphic work. Perhaps that's what Curry meant in her post.

Photomanipulation is prohibited in PotF.

I believe whamslam3 when he says he added no effects to his photo though. The shadow could have been cast by an object in front of the camera. It doesn't seem at all photoshop added to me, and I don't think his entry should be disqualified.

I did, and I didn't like it that much. Except for the Joker, all the other actors were incredibly boring. The movie was long and I couldn't wait for it to end. The guy who does Batman was especially boring and bad.
