basically, the man was a genius. he was a visionary that revolutionized his own unique music styles and inspired so many. his avant-jazz style guitar style was both innovative and impressive. one of the greatest musicians of all time with a musical legacy spanning over three decades.
i don't want to make a big speech (but i could) so i'll just tell you that this thread it to discuss the man, his music, his projects and all things affiliated with Frank Zappa. American composer.
i don't have many of his albumes, but so far Joes Garage is my favourite. i love this album so muh, i'll find myself listening to all of it 3 times without noticing the time. right now i'm learning 'What's new in Baltimore" on guitar, and i love that song too.
proof that he inspires? the man has a planet named after him!....and a fish......and a jellyfish.....
well, anyway, discuss and pay due respect to the man.

Could you tell me more about this guy? I've never heard of him. I am musically sheltered.
Sure thing mate :thumbs.
Zappa Zappa Zappa, where to begin? an extremely intelligent, artistsic, driven, ambitious, creative, ridiclously strict and effiecnt musician. Influnced by composers such as Edgar Varèse and Igor Stravinsky, and various genres such as blues, jazz (bebop and free jazz specifically), just to name a few.
He was a drummer, a guitarist a percussionist you name it he played it. He's bands and quartets were infamous for their brilliant drum works, and the complexity of their compostions and the insane temp changes, rythems.
Franks guitar style was extremely unique and indiviual in nature, a trait that made him one of the most respected guitarist, not just in the Jazz world, but music world in its entirity.
But to see Zappa at his best, we come to his compostions. A master of condaction and arrangemnt of avant-grade.
That's a breif of Zappa as solo artist.
but then, there was he Mothers of Invention.
Mothers of invention was an R&B band, previously called The Soul Giants. Zappa joined in as a guitarist,. but quickly took lead in the band and then renamed it to The Mothers Of Invention.
combining there efforts with Tom Wilson (producer of bob dulans, Highway 61 revisited, and the free wheeling bob dylan). TMOI recored their first record (which was a double disk); Freak Out!, which is quite possibly one of the most brilliant, ground breaking and diverisifed debut by a band yet. The record blended R&B, jazz and a huge does of experimentiation, capturing the freak culutre of the times.
frnak Zappa wasnt just a guitarist, composer and band leader. He was also a superb songwriter. The second album, Absolutely Free saw Zappa writing about the hypocrisy of american socitey at the time, and how it nullifed and supressed altenative cultures to grow and thrive.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
thats a brief run down of zappa during the 50s to 60s. the 70's thru 90's still had more to show about the man ingenius creativity and brilliance, but Im too lazy to type about that now XD

Let's not forget his connection with Don van Vliet.
I cannot believe I forgot to mention him and Captain Beefheart =[
The Don met Zappa in highschool, around 1957 I think. At the time Zappa was playing with The Blackout (or was it the Whiteouts? o.O).
anyhow, The Don and Zappa became close friends who influnced each other musically, and did a fair share of collabs throught the 60s and 70s (the most note worthy one is on Bongo Fury ).
Man, my Zappa collection is ridiclously small. My dad had all Zappa's cassettes, from the 60s till 80s, including bootlegs.

the man was a genius indeed. who else but zappa could compose such a song that contains a guitar solo played along with a loading zone announcement?
Freak Out! is a good one, one that i've got in my pathetic zappa collection. i'll have to build it up soon. wow, 12 posts in a night after i made the thread. howcome this thread was never created before?

*bump*
Forunately and unfortunately, this post isn't just for bumping. In a horrible accident, I somehow deleted next to all of my Frank Zappa albums (Grand Wazoo, Uncle Meat, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, and We're Only In It For The Money, while retaining Hot Rats, Them or Us, and Waka/Jawaka). I was going to look for more albums anyway, as it'd been a while since I'd gotten more.
Would anyone happen to have those albums and possibly more of them for sharing?
Pfft, this thread needed bumping anyway.

Indeed it did!
Of those you mentioned you'd lost I only have Grand Wazoo.
Other than that I have Them or Us, Studio Tan and The Man from Utopia + some best of album.

Yeah, that sounds (is) good.
I also got:
Freak Out!, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Over-nite Sensation, Apostrophe ('), Roxy & Elsewhere, Bongo Fury, Zappa in New York, Joe's Garage, Sheik Yerbouti, Sleep Dirt, You Are What You Is, The Yellow Shark and The Lost Episodes.
Four of those caught my eye, Freak Out!, Apostrophe ('), Joe's Garage, and Sheik Yerbouti, although asking one person to upload five specific albums seems crazy.
If you're unable to get those other four, just Weasels will be alright. Rather, any combination is fine, really (since this is a pretty big favor you guys are doing)

I'll upload them. I'm going to upload Sleep Dirt too because it's underrated.
Just gimme 2-3 days.

Hot Rats is said to be really good but I never heard that one unfortunately. Out of the ones I have heard, I'd start with Apostrophe ('). And then Freak Out!.
In fact, I'm gonna get Hot Rats now.
^Agreed. Apostrophe (') is a great starter.
I absolutely love Zappa in the Mothers period. Not a bad album in sight. Absolutely Free is goddamn incredible.
I'm more of a fan of his early solo work. Like Chunga's Revenge and Hot Rats.
I'm willing to pimp any Mothers albums anyone wants.
