eglacirion, I love you :glomp
FOr Fans of Sufjan Stevens, Arcade Fire, Niel Young, Wilco & Iron & wine
Brilliant, brilliant brilliant. This band is just freaking brilliant. I mean I heard a bit by them in the past, but as I listen to a full album Ghosts Of The Highway, Im simply blown away . So melodic, so dazzling, I just wish it lasts forever.

If you thought they didn't make albums like Neil Young's "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" anymore, cue up "Ghosts of the Great Highway," and marvel over the fact that Kozelek and company are able to cross-pollinate folk, country, punk, and psychedelic influences without sounding the least bit retro, stealing the purifying flame of Crazy Horse meltdowns like "Cortez the Killer" while sounding like no one but themselves. If you're a Nick Drake fan warming your hands over the ashes of "Pink Moon," consider the fact that at least one song on this album, "Duk Koo Kim," is as beautiful and otherwordly as anything in Drake's oeuvre , and consider the possibility that Kozelek is as unfairly ignored and marginalized in our time as Drake was in his.
"Glenn Tipton," "Duk Koo Kim," "Carry Me Ohio" and "Gentle Moon" are all instant classics, full of heart, understated grace, and authentic yearning, while avoiding the art-school sentimentality of Kozelek's early work. "Duk Koo Kim" is especially worthy of note, reinvented here as a 14-minute folk-punk-psychedelic apocalypse, with backwards guitars, Portuguese guitars, and bells swirling around Kozelek's aching voice. (I can't praise this track enough, other than to say that if I was a very bright teenager with a set of headphones and a bong, I'd probably decide to become a musician after hearing this song alone.) It's one of the most terrifying love songs ever written, as emotionally naked as the songs on Joni Mitchell's "Blue." (Like several of the songs on this album, "Duk Koo Kim" is the tale of a hero who died young -- in this case, a Korean boxer killed in the ring.)
At his best, Kozelek writes and sings like an oracle, and plays feedback-drenched electric guitar with as much intensity as his punk and heavy metal heroes while never descending into mere chaos and noise. If you're a music critic or record reviewer (I happen to be an editor of Wired magazine, and have no connection to Kozelek), entertain the notion that instead of hyping the latest skinny-tie buzz band that no one will care about in 3 years, you might consider running a piece on Kozelek and this album. If you're a music fan who enjoys Wilco, Iron and Wine, and other forward-looking traditionally-influenced bands, give this a listen. It's far beyond what almost everyone is doing these days.

I have finally listened eleven times to the Ghosts of the Great Highway, and I have relised that I no longer turn it on to get into it, but because I enjoy it.
This album is the ultimate summer album for me. Lying in the sun listening to this is outwordly experience.
I have also relised that the track that is your favorite Duk Koo Kim, isn't even close to my favorite track on this album.
These tracks truly blow me away.
Carry Me Ohio - The intro makes me think of you moe. "Sorry that I could never love you back.." Don't ask me why. :P This songs transition from verse to chorus is perfection
Floating - The guitar is truly amazing on this track. Just a feel good song.
Lily and Parrots - Combining an alternative kind of riff with his mumbling vocals gives an amazing feel to this song.
Pancho Villa - Again, great guitar work and the perfect outro to the album.
Duk Koo Kim - Still a great song, but it does feel like they made it to long. At least to me.
haha :laugh, 10 of my friends who listened to this record said the same thing about Carry Me Ohio. They all say they instantly think of me when they listen to it XD.
It's nice to be remembered by a song :amuse

But really, this album is the shit. Amazing creation, I can't belive that I didn't like it the first time I heard it.
So which album should I get from them after this one?
Actually, this is the obnly sunk Kil moon Record to date. Tha mastermind behind sun kil moon,Mark Kozelek; has another amazing band, The Red House Painters. He also has his own solo records (which are so hard to find, but are lovely, or so Ive heard).
Ill up some, but I dont have any :(.
However, if you want more albums from this genre, I definiatly reccomend Sufjan Stevens, Iron & wine, Devendra Benhart. (I have their albums, soooo...:wink)

Hm, i only listened to Duk Koo Kim once and i thought it was good. It would probably be better if i knew what they were saying, but from a musical point of view it's great, yeah.
Which reminds me, can anyone send me a copy of Tiny cities? My version was deleted along with 34 gigs =[
back-ups Moe, BACK-UPS :O
thats what I was trying to do! I was backing up to my new external hardrvie, and those files just disappeared, I lost all of my Frabk Zappa (52 bloody cds + live gigs), all of the Grateful dead and all of David Bowie + some more

:amazed
are you sure you didn't press shift+delete instead of ctrl+c ?

Thoughts: Vocally I get Bob Dylan flashbacks, and musically it's very mellow and smooth.
I'll have to admit I am really liking this. It's not something I could listen to all the time, but for days like today when all I want to do is relax and not think, this is an excellent album.

Sun Kil Moon is an excellent band, but Red House Painters are on a completely different level. Mark has appeared in a few movies and if the people in this forum are curious you can check out his cameo in Vanilla Sky and supporting role in Almost Famous.
"Dude, fix your fucking face." is his famous one-liner in the bathroom of the nightclub in Vanilla Sky. Brilliant. He also plays the bassist in the fictional band Stillwater in Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous. Also of note, the Have You Forgotten track featured on the Vanilla Sky soundtrack differs slightly from the album version on Songs From A Blue Guitar (btw, a great place to start for RHP). Its been a long standing subject of debate between me and my friends and personally, w/o taking away from the album version, I think that there is just something perfect about the VS version.
I also heard that he has some kind of role in Shop Girl.

more sun kil moon fans <333
Well, if your a fan of Modest Mouse, then their cover album Tiny cities is a must have. They did a fantastic job and some covers I even perfer more than the originals.
Also, Mark (lead guitarist/vocalist/song writer) has a previous project; Red House Painters. Equally as good as Sun Kil Moon, and he has 2 solo efforts to date. One of the most talented indiviuals of our day and age. You really cant go wrong with anything Mark touches
*wants to send you, but T_T*
