Now remember to watch the orginal SDF Macross and Macross Plus. :p Macross 7 and Zero are slightly more acquired tastes though, but still worth watching.

I too just finally got around to watching the first episode (always thought I would like it, but after I found out it was apart of a franchise of sorts I delayed watching it for awhile)

Looks like a great anime.
