mormon 101
1. we read the bible and the book of mormon
2.the book of mormon is when jesus went to heven
3. we belive in the plan of salvation
4. theres not just heaven or heck there are 3 kingdoms 1 hell
5. first kingdom is said to be lined with glass and buetiful above all other things
6. 2nd kingdom is for the people that were not members but still did the right thing
7. 3rd kingdom is for killers or orther bad people
8. our hell is the sons of predistion (satan) so the people that disobeyed god strait up are the people that go here for instance cain and able, cain went here
9. we belive that god jesus and the holy ghost are diffent people or spirits

Well... the religion itself is a bit .... i'm not trying to be offensive but it's a bit ridiculous (but still WAAAAAAY better than Scientology)
But with the stories aside I think that it overall preaches good values, close families ie.
In fact there are only to things i have against Mormonism, the intolerance towards homosexuality, and the persecution of other religions (but i kind of get that this view on other belief systems was passed down by father to son from the days that mormons were being persecuted)

I visited the Temple area in Salt Lake City. It was pretty nice though they were knocking down nearby buildings in order to expand. The tour guide tried to create parallels between Mormonism and Catholicism; none of them really worked.

Well, as do many religions.
But it also carries a lot of really ridiculous morals and laws. Just like almost any other organized religion.

I have a question: What caused the rift between the LDS and FLDS Churches? Just some reformation of some sort?

Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This Church is the one under controversy by the Texas government as of now.
They still practice polygamy.

I have to agree that there is not much tolerance for that which explands beyond normal Christian standards within the Church. Homosexuality is an example.

Actually there is, from what I have heard, a program of sorts in which a homosexual is put into a heterosexual marriage in order to "cure" the homosexuality.

It is similar to the rift in shiite and suni Islam. LDS believed that the churches prophet (like the pope, but not infallible) should be "chosen by God," that is, elected by and from the Twelve Apostles that are right under the Prophet (not sure if that hierarchy was set up at the time, basically, the leader should be elected). FLDS believed that the prophet should be the direct descendant of Joseph Smith (the churches founder). The argument started right after Joseph was murdered in prison and one group thought Brigham Young should be the prophet and the other group, lead by Joseph's wife if I recall correctly, thought that Joseph's son should be the next leader.
Needless to say, they split, and the result is what you see today.

Interesting. I always thought it was simply based on different interpretations of the Book of Mormon.

I always thought they split because of Polygamy.

I always thought they split because of Polygamy.
That was never really the issue. Polygamy was outlawed by the Supreme Court and the Church in 1889, so it may have contributed to the schism, but I doubt it was the entire underlying cause. There is also the RLDS (R = Reformed), which bases itself, if I am remembering correctly, out of Missouri.

Care to explain?I know at least two of the characters are/were Mormon, but I don't know about the other characters or plot. However, the wife is a pill-popper and her husband is homosexual.

I went to a boarding school in Utah when I was much younger. Wow, talk about a Mormon state (great snow by the way, yay snowboarding in park city!).
The one thing I noted is that Mormons are extremely against being related to Christianity and simply follow "Jesus", I heard a lot about their "choose the right" concepts. While the religion is interesting I am not a big follower of religion and in the end to me it still boils down to "something someone at some point decided to just make up". Interestingly enough, despite being a complete atheist I've never felt discriminated against by a Mormon, so I perceive them as a pretty tolerant religion (which I think is good).
So my question to you is, how do you think Mormon's as a whole view other religions (or lack therein of religion)? What made you become a Mormon (were you raised a Mormon)? What are your views on creationism? Do you think the Mormon religion has long term stability (i.e. in the face of possible contradictory scientific fact)?
Not trolling, legitimately curious about opinion.
Edit:

Why would, being homosexual, he have a wife? Was he lying to himself? Did his church/peers somehow pressure him into it? Why was he silly enough to actually do it regardless?

You're talking about the "Reorginized" Church of Jesus Christ for latter day saints, not the FLDS. The reorginized was started by Joseph Smith' wife, she wanted the prophet to be her son, so she started her own church. They even had women who became the prophet, because some descendants had no sons.
The FLDS broke off and started a cult, because they believed in polygamy.
As for South Park, that episode was friggin' hilarious, everything they said was true too. Here was the best quote though.
Gary (Mormon kid) - "Look, maybe us Mormons do believe in stories that make absolutely no sense and maybe Joseph Smith did make it all up, but I have a great life and a great family and I have the Book of Mormon to thank for that.
The truth is, I don't care if Joseph Smith made it all up, because what the church teaches now is loving your family, being nice and helping people and even though people in this town might think that's stupid, I still choose to believe in it. All I tried to do was be your friend Stan, but you're so high and mighty that you couldn't look past my religion and just be my friend back.
You've got a lot of growing up to do, buddy, suck my balls."

The two good things are that you're not allowed to drink alcohol and that you are allowed to have multiple wives.

That line "suck my balls" was just perfect, though. I spit out the soda I was drinking, because that line was so unexpected. No way did I think that Mormon kid was gonna say that, it was the best line in the entire show.

whats the difference between the first kindom and second kindom?
The first kingdom is where Jesus and Heavenly Father dwell, and that is the place where those who follow the Atonement go after they die.
The second kingdom is for those that follow the word of God and live moral lives.
