Anyone out there play lacrosse or watch...actually i think i should ask if anyone knows what lacrosse is. If not go google it. Anyways if you do, what position do you play, I'm a middie.

Lacrosse is a sport that's becoming more popular...in the future it will be the next soccer ;) although I'm not sure why soccer is so popular anyways.

I played lacrosse for 10 years. I am not going to college for lacrosse since my school was big in politics, like if your father used to play for that school, you would start every game even if you weren't good. Just becasue your father played years ago.

hey y'all, it's time again. The championship is rolling around again, so set the Tivo. It's time to see some of the best teams in the nation duke it out for the title.

Personally, I favor the Virginia Cavaliers, but hey, that's me. Go Cavs!

thx for the love, thats my school. I'm one of the few black people to play this sport and enjoy it. Did varsity in highschool and played in JR high too. Until my first game I thought it was an indoor sport so I was really surprised when we had to go outside for a game, but I got alot better as I kept playing. Id try to play for the Cavs if I wasnt so busy.

I know its gotten some bad attention since the rape case, but still it makes more people aware of the sport. It was originally a native american game designed to train for war. I'm glad Im a guy since the female version seems so wussy, y'all can barely check eachother, but we get to wack the shit out of people as long as its above the waist.

As a UVA sports fan, lacrosse is about the only thing I have to look forward to.

However, exciting games like the UVA vs. Syracuse, UVA vs. Johns Hopkins, and UVA vs. Maryland game make the sport worth watching anyway. A bunch of other great ones this year were Syracuse vs. Loyola and UNC vs. Maryland.

I would say the top two programs in the history of college lacrosse are Johns Hopkins and Syracuse...with Hopkins probably holding a slight lead overall and Syracuse possibly having a slight lead from the 80's on. Then 3 and 4 pretty much interchangeable would be UVA and Princeton.

The sport needs more teams though...I would love to see the ACC expand beyond 4 teams. Wake Forest, NC State and maybe Georgia Tech or Clemson seem like decent candidates, although Clemson and GT are a little far South of current lacrosse territory.

Yeah we won it that year....but now you are hating on UVA for stealing your basketball coach :P Does WSU have a club lacrosse team?

It is probably easier to learn the basics of Lacrosse than for American football.

here is a decent link http://www.uslacrosse.org/the_sport/mens_rules.phtml

If you can run, catch, and stick handle, you're a beast in girl's lacrosse.

Checking's not allowed so you don't have to worry about someone blind siding you or anybody sending a stick check straight into your ribs.

Lacrosse is a sport for the white American youth. I don't think it will ever be big in a professional level. Anyways I'll stick to my idea of football being the GOAT sport.

That sounds like words of someone that's never even played the sport before. I guess Hockey's a white sport too right?:wink

The ignorant think its a sport tailored for White people until they actually step in there and get their hands dirty. Same with ice hockey.

Any links to a site that has the rules/regulations? A never quite understood Lacrosse.

All you need to know in a nutshell

Positions:

3 attackers, usually near the opposing goalie. Usually not allowed to cross midfield unless they switch off with a midfielder(Don't know why an attacker would be switching off with a Middie, but you never know)

3 midfielders which are allowed to patrol the entire field

3 defenders which protect your goal. Usually not allowed to cross midfield unless they switch off with a midfielder(Common because defense man score sometimes, and they are supposed to be the best at clearing the ball)

And of course the 2 goalies of each team.

Each team is allowed to swap out 1 short crosse midfielder for a long crosse midfielder

Responsibilities:

Attackers are your goal scorers. They have to be able to catch, and shoot fairly well, as well as have good stick handling abilities.

Defenders:They have to protect your goal, be good passers, good body checkers, and good stick checkers.

Midfielders- They have to be the best conditioned players on the field, since they play both offensive and defensive zones. They have to be able to pick up ground balls well. They have to be able to pass the ball good, and shoot well if need be. They have to be able to lay good body checks, and stick checks in open field. Basically they have to be the most complete players on the team(And from experience, playing Midfield is NOT fun at all).

Goalies- Last line of defens. Their goal is to stop shots from attacking players).

Field:

It roughly the size of a Football field maybe 10 or 15 yards shorter than a 100 yards.

At any given time not including goalies there are only 12 players in any offensive zone(3 Middies on offense, 3 middies on defense, 3 defenseman, 3 attackers).

Players can be switched off if you so please, so if you're a middie you can run through the midfield dividing line and switch off with an attacker.

There's the crease which is a big circle that surrounds the goals of each team. You have to give the goalie that much space, so an attacking player is not allowed to step into the circle. You're free to shoot anywhere else outside of that circle though.

Crosse(The stick).

Easier to show with a picture

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Lacrosse_head.jpg
http://www.lacrosse.com/images/Catalog/ProductImages/300/01705.JPG

There are also D-Poles(Defensive sticks) that are only used by Defenseman and Defensive midfielders

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31oxUuZTC9L._AA280_.jpg

That's only the top end of a stick and the pocket. The shaft is the long metal pipe of the stick. The butt of the stick is a rubbery part at the very end of the shaft

Rules/Penalties:

Face-offs are done at midfield.

On face off only Midfielders are permitted to make a play on the ball. Once a team gains clear possession of the ball and breaks the midfield zone, the 3 attackers and 3 defenders from each team are permitted to play up to the midfield line as long as they don't cross it(Confused you yet?).

Some of the more common penalties:

Warding- When you as an attacking player are using your off hand to swat the defenders stick away

Cross checking- If you make a body check on an attacking player(Hit somebody) you have to have both hands together.

Slashing- When a player maliciously using his stick to wack a player.

Tripping- Obvious

Stalling- Usually occurs when a team is ahead. You have to make an active effort at all times to score, so if you're up by a goal you can't just pass it around and wait until expires.

Holding- When you intentionally hold on to a player to impede his movement

Illegal crosse- When you have a stick that doesn't conform to the rules. It could be a pocket lower than normal(Pockets lower than normal means that the ball is harder to jar loose from the crosse) or a pinched stick(The pocket is made in such a way that it "holds" on to the ball) or otherwise any stick that's bigger than normal.

That's about it. It sounds complicated, but you could learn the rules in a good 3 or so hours of practice
