View Full Version : Code Geass or Death Note?

If someone likes either of the two, the first recommendation most people give for a similar series would be the one of the two that person hasn't watched. So, since most people who have watched one have seen the other due to the recommendations, which do you prefer?
Although very different shows, the main characters of both and their goals are very similar. There are very few characters quite like Lelouch and Light; geniuses with special, godly powers who wish to takeover and change the world. Both have aliases they use for their more godly sides; Lelouch's being Zero and Light's being Kira. They do have their differences, the main ones being that Lelouch has a human side, a sister he loves more than anything and an actual reason (revenge) for his actions, where as Light was simply bored and only ever loved himself... BUT, despite their differences, it's very possible for Lelouch to turn out exactly like Light by the end of Code Geass.
If you put me on the spot, I'd pick Death Note over Code Geass. Unlike Code Geass, Death Note is complete and can't disappoint me like a second season of one of my favourite series is currently is doing. I also prefer the dark colours and realistic depiction of our world Death Note offers.
I stopped Death note at episode 15 or so.
I am still following Code Geass. I guess my point is clear, I prefer CG. It's just more versatile. It's not only mindgames.
Plus I dislike overly dark anime :zaru

Death Note, because it was my first real taste of the villain's side of the story. I also prefer the coloring and fitting mood over Geass', which is very bright and colorful (though beautiful, it looks like a candy circus sometimes). One character alone (L :pek) also solos every character in Geass due to sheer awesomeness. I also happen to hate Light very much, though hating him makes me like Death Note more.

While I like both , I happen to like CG more due it being more of a war story which I prefer to thrillers . Really you are comparing apples and orange-kuns here .
DeathNote went completely shit after Episode 18 or so.
Not consistent, not good.

Hmm... I suppose that would be Code Geass. Death Note was good, but CG has what made me like Death Note and then is also good in areas that I felt Death Note was lacking in.So, Code Geass is the one I prefer.

Overall I enjoyed the first half of DN far more than I enjoyed the entire season of CG. It was brilliant and simple. Also the mind games in DN were much more suspenseful IMO.
However the second half of DN was just lame. The villains just plain sucked.

What is with this Mello and Near hatred? :sun It's because L was too great to be paralleled, isn't it?
I liked how Death Note subtley tied in its symbolism, what with God, Jesus, the feet washing, and in the end where L was seen to be chained to Light (as he was in the beginning) after he realizes the combined efforts of Mello and Near, who are the successors of L, defeated him. It gives true meaning to "bite you back in the ass."
And lol, Light would destroy Lelouch; he is superior to him in everything except heart and piloting a Knightmare (which doesn't even exist in his universe :zaru).

Geass. DN was a good anime at first, nothing amazing and then just went downhill.

Code Geass is a better anime. Death Note had horrible pacing. That doesn't mean that I think it has a better story. Death Note was a terrific manga...one of the best I have ever read. If executed correctly, it could have been better...unfortunately it wasn't.

Geass. I did get Death Note recommended to me, but didn't read it much further than about chapter 25-28 or so. Light was sorta cool, but from the look and sound of it, in the end he just got too corrupted, straying away too far from his original goal - and far more unscrupulous if compared to Lelouch. And the way in which they (Light and L) try to fool/outwit each other just felt rather... tiresome from where I left oft, anyway :apathy

While I do agree to a certain extent, I think the second half of the DN anime would've been near enough perfect if not for Madhouse getting a rush of blood to the head and changing the ending. It pissed me off that, after removing all the boring crap that ruined the second half the manga and making it thrilling, Madhouse removed the final DN twist, replacing it with a pointless marathon.
The Light vs. L parts were most certainly the best parts of the series, so I agree 100% with you on that score. L is my favourite DN character, his obvious AS traits making him a rather unforgettable character.
Just so you know, all the stuff you mentioned wasn't in the manga - The rooftop scene, the towel scene that followed, the marathon and L appearing before Light were all original content.
I can honestly say that I like them both equally.
In that case, why haven't you voted? Option 3 is perfect for you. :zaru

I'm sorry but you're talking rubbish: The first half of the anime moved at around 3 chapters per episode, going at the perfect pace for the best section of the series. Then, due to the second half of the manga having truly horrible pacing, Madhouse cut out as much of the crap as possible and turned it from boring to thrilling.
In terms of the first 25 episodes, many people would say Death Note is one of the best manga adaptations in existence: Only one short scene was added and very little was removed.

I should also add that Death Note was at a disadvantage. A lot of us had already read the manga when we decided to watch the anime. It's hard to enjoy something as much when we know what's coming. I wanted Raito to kill everyone and rule the world (his resourcefulness and intelligence won me over)...but I had to watch the whole series knowing that it wouldn't happen. My interest became less after L was killed as a result.

It would be a good idea to spoiler tag the above in case someone looking for opinions on both shows enters.
I hadn't read the manga prior to viewing. Instead, I witnessed manga readers openly chatting about 'Ladies Night' and the the final chapters in the anime discussion thread when the anime had just started airing.

I'll side with Death Note on this one. It was more thrilling, to me, plus the characters were better developed. Also, the dark atmosphere and unique story gives it additional points. For an anime/manga that doesn't solely rely on action, it delivers with sharp writing and intelligent characters. Basically, it was a cat and mouse game throughout. Genuinely unique in the crop of other anime/manga out there.

Not really comparable, to me at least. Despite the apparent similarities, I like Geass for totally different reasons than DN; I watch the former as a character-driven show, more than anything, while the latter was more abstract, intellectual, and artistically coherent.
Death Note almost seemed like an existentialist morality play, something Dostoevsky could have written on an acid trip. Geass, on the other hand, seems to follow the more classic route of Shakespearean tragedy.

I picked Code Geass. I never read the manga but if the whole series was as good as the first 18 episodes then Death Note would probably be my favorite anime of all time. Sadly it went downhill from there to downright crap after L died Not to mention the ending was a complete disappointment. So I can't put it above Code Gass which was consistently good from start to finish. Although u never know, S2 could end up terrible lol.

Has much as I really adored Death Note,I'll have to pick Code Geass for this one. Code Geass as more than just drama, it has nice mecha action,ecchi/hentai moments, all of the things that Death Note lacks it has. The characters are very fun and lovable, and the drama once again is just higher than it was in Death Note sad to say.

Good to know your priorities are in the right place...
I like the fact that Death Note didn't rely on fan service to get/keep its fans - It made me respect it more than I'll ever respect Code Geass, which relies heavily on Kallen's breasts.
I wish more series did what Death Note and Monster did and went for a more realistic, real world type of thing. There's just something about seeing a dark depiction of our would in animated form that does it for me.

I wouldn't call Death Note "realistic". Minimalistic, perhaps; devoid of visual fluff and fanservice, of course; dark and gritty, sure. But, realistic? Anime typically have problems with depicting a sensible reality on a more global scale, it rarely makes any rational sense, and Death Note wasn't much better than it's contemporaries. Better than CG, that's for sure, but far off from, say, Seirei no Moribito.
Monster is a good example though. Except for the Nazis. Why Urasawa felt the need to have those Nazis, I'll never understand...

Although I see where you are coming from,Death Note did go for a more realistic darker approach, thats the reason what makes that anime so good. But all in all,the anime only appealed to few viewers, who actually liked the fact of listening to guy a talk to himself for 10-15 minutes. But having a anime like Code Geass that throws in sex and action is much more appealing to more fans out there.
I prefer Code Geass because it's vastly different from Death Note, same applies for Lelouch and Light, but i would recommend Death Note to people. It's pretty damn original and very enjoyable.

Two different kind of animes in my opinion. I didn't watch past ep 15 or so of Death Note, I enjoyed it but it was one of those animes that I had to force myself to watch otherwise I wouldn't get what was happening.
Code Geass on the other hand is something I can watch over and over and always look forward to watching.

The tough thing about rating Code Geass is that it stands on a pinpoint between terrible cheesiness, drama, and wonderful cheesiness. One episode we have Lancelot flipping pizza dough, then we have bloodstained Euphemia's death, and then, ZEROOOOOOOO!!!!!
Facepalm. Tears. Hysterical laughter.
Some bloggers use the word "train wreck" for Code Geass, and I don't contest the label. Look closely. As a whole, Code Geass has been an absolute mess. We've had Lelouch in school life mode, Lelouch in political-military mecha mode, Lelouch in shounen "I will protect you" mode, Lelouch in Yagami Light mode... the list goes on. Mixed in with the genre salad is an absurb level of fanservice, unexplained supernatural elements, sideplots about drug use / mask-wearing cats / psychic man-children, and an alternative history full of anti-western (Thanks Sunrise!) undertones.
Code Geass is compelling and interesting, even brilliant from time to time. Nevertheless, Death Note's developed message and thematic consistency will make it memorable in the future, and I don't see that in Code Geass. How could Sunrise make it happen?
To start off with, cut out Ashford, make the supernatural elements relevant to the themes, and develop Suzaku's philosophy so that the plot seems like a clash of ideals rather than the sparring of a hapless moron with an amoral dick.
Sasuke X

Oneironaut, you put that wonderfully well.
Code Geass is indeed a blend of many genres and different elements. When you sit back and think about all the stuff Sunrise attempted to fit into the first 25 episodes, varying from ecchi to epic, it's a wonder it worked at all. Sunrise deserve a lot of credit for pulling it off as well as they did.
Death Note, on the other hand, never attempted to do anything other than be dark and thrilling from the start. Death Note fans were never forced to watch how Light handled his school life and fought off an army of bouncy girls, the focus instead, in stark contrast to Lelouch/Zero, being on his Kira side for the duration of the story.
I don't believe it's possible for Code Geass to be anywhere near as complete as Death Note when it ends due to the focus not being on anything specific. While what Sunrise did worked very well at the start of the story, only mysteries were raised in the first season, leaving all the supernatural elements to be explained later on and the heart of the plot unexplained. In S2 (and probably S3) Sunrise need to explain the plot in a satisfactory manner and, since Sunrise seemed determined to keep Ashford, continue to blend an awful lot of elements together... Not something I'd like to attempt when there's a fine line between a story coming across as stupid or brilliant.
Talking of complete, Code Geass is nowhere near complete. Many Death Note fans, as shown by ~Shin~, feel the latter half of the series (26-37 of the anime) dropped in quality significantly, rating the series lower as a result. What's interesting about that is the fact that the first 3 episodes of Code Geass S2 show it to be a very poor sequel, one where the epicness is removed and replaced by predictability due to S2 being a repeat of S1; the originality of S1 vanishing. The point I'm trying to make is that, although the first season was truly brilliant, S2 could well end up destroying the series in a far worse way than 26-37 of Death Note did for fans of that series.

They were kinda central to Johan's past. It was his justification on the whole Johan side of the story. Though I don't see how that makes Monster less realistic.
Not the Czechoslovakian secret police people, the neonazis - those horribly cliche and stereotypical brutes that served as a background in two arcs. And it makes Monster less realistic, because Urasawa chose to utilize a boring stereotype instead of giving the idea at least a little depth.
Though in comparison to the average level of understanding Japanese mangaka have of the Western world in general, Urasawa still comes off as "realistic".
Some bloggers use the word "train wreck" for Code Geass, and I don't contest the label. Look closely. As a whole, Code Geass has been an absolute mess. Well, I'll definitely agree with the rampant eclecticism, though a lot of anime suffer from this. It's like the authors horribly want to include all the "cool" things, and the artistic coherence of the work suffers as a result.
Though if that fragment about Lelouch tries to suggest he's an inconsistent character, then I'll disagree.
To start off with, cut out Ashford, make the supernatural elements relevant to the themes, and develop Suzaku's philosophy so that the plot seems like a clash of ideals rather than the sparring of a hapless moron with an amoral dick.
While I agree with the part about Ashford, for the most part (though I'd like the Ashford characters to retain some purpose within the plot, as opposed to just indiscriminately axing them), but not the bolded line. CG was never really about conflicts of ideals, but conflicts of personalities (the comparison to Shakespeare seems even more fitting here). From the very beginning, Suzaku's ideal was just a rationalization for his guilt, which is why he abandoned it so easily. Lelouch, on the other hand, doesn't even have anything that could be described as a coherent ideal; he's just pursuing his personal goals and rationalizing it as "changing the world". It simply wouldn't work.

I suppose it's all about taste I guess, but I'm certainly not surprised that Code Geass is taking the lead by a wide margin here. I like Code Geass a lot, but things I :facepalm at are: ecchi, candy circus colors, Ledouche's overdramatic gestures, and sometimes mecha (never was a big fan of it). I like Death Note for its mostly stay-at-home gloominess that still manages to fit in all the action without needing to fight or show off. And in terms of characters, there are far more in Code Geass and they are enjoyable, but Death Note definitely has better quality when it comes to depth and complexity because of its smaller cast.
CG is good for the whole "feel good" elements and it has various genres mixed into it, but it's too wishy washy sometimes (like Kallen's emotions :zaru). DN has a nice balance and focus on the important things, expanding drastically on a simple game of cat-and-mouse yet retaining its simplicity... Not to mention it's more heartbreaking for the audience in my opinion because lovable characters end up dying in the show after being scrutinized the whole time, while the only character worth mentioning in CG for this tug of emotion is Euphemia.
To put it all at once, Death Note has a strong and bitter scent to it, relying on consistency and dark overtones to do the job, whereas Code Geass has such a mix of flavors that it's difficult to distinguish the real peel at times, and that is the part that makes it rather unappealing to me.

With or without removing those materials, the second half of DN was a failure. It tried to repeat the first half with horrible villains and a sub-par execution.
Though it's not like the manga ending was all that better either.
I view the second half of the manga as a failure. However, I also view EP26-37 of the anime as the best possible adaptation of that.
There were certainly still problems even after Madhouse tried their best to paint over the cracks: Near's character being a hollow replication of L and Mello's character acting illogically in order for the story to reach the end being the worst. Thankfully, the weaknesses were, in my opinion at least, outweighed by the strengths and the story remained thrilling for me right up until the final 7 minutes.
As for the manga ending, I liked it. The message of Death Note throughout was that man, no matter how intelligent and close to human perfection, can never reach the realm of God. I found it very fitting that...
Mikami abandoned his God, followed by Ryuk abandoning him because his source of entertainment had disappeared the moment Light begged him for help.
The 2nd DN movie ending was better, with the manga ending occurring after the events of EP25 and L winning.
The worst part of the entire anime was actually during the first half of the series for me - The pre-Higuchi Yotsuba episodes. I was actually close to dropping the series after the Matsuda episide.
I wouldn't call Death Note "realistic". Minimalistic, perhaps; devoid of visual fluff and fanservice, of course; dark and gritty, sure. But, realistic? I say realistic because there are so few anime series out there that feature our world without major historical alterations, machines that don't exist, etc. The selection is limited at best if you look for realistic anime.
Monster is a much more realistic series than Death Note, quite simply because the only monster in Monster is of the human variety. Where as Death Note injected supernatural elements and mixed them with as much realism as possible, Monster told a story about an orphanage where monsters were raised.
If we were to forget about the obvious similarities the main characters of Code Geass and Death Note share, Monster would be the #1 recommendation for Death Note fans. Just like Death Note, Monster has a dark and gloomy atmosphere that pulls the viewer in, the use of colours setting the tone perfectly. And, also just like Death Note, Monster never tried lighten the mood with comedy elements. As we know, Code Geass is the exact opposite in terms of use of colour and the consistency of the overall tone.

First off, L, in my opinion, was not that great of a character. His depth was shallow and the only reason people liked him was because he was strange and pretty much an outcast. But I like him alot better than Light. Light, for all his bitching and biscuits, was a loser. He lost. To an eight year old and a tranny hooker with really bad acne. Then one of his closest allies goes shit and banana's and shoots him. The live drama had more punch, in my opinion, since Souichirou didn't die and L was able to get Light in the end.
Code Geass is quite possibly one of the best mech shows ever. For anyone who says S2 is a repeat, let me ask you this. Was Rollo in S1 with the Vincent kicking major ass? No. Instead we had Suzaku with his super gay asshole ideals, which he later throws away thus proving the idea of not killing people during war is stupid(I'm looking at you STILL GSD's Kira Yamato-bot) and it looks like Sunrise finally got this one right. Then again, they probably had to beat Fudaka with a stick to keep away from this.
CG for me is a lack luster thriller with whiny little fangirls who claw and scream at you for not thinking Light and L are a cannon couple, and when they were handcuffed they had hot man smex.
Instead I have Kallen fanboys who scream for more boobs. And really, when is more boobs ever a bad thing?..........oh wait, this was disproved by Dragonaut. Auto-correct: When is moderately believable large boobs ever a bad thing?

Ah, you bring up an interesting point I neglected to mention in my previous post: The lack of character development the characters in Death Note go through. In most stories, the main character grows along with the story, the experiences changing him/her as the story progresses... This doesn't happen in Death Note.
Once the main character of Death Note, Light, comes to terms with being a killer in the very first episode, he goes through none of these changes. The reason for this is that, quite simply, he's a complete character from the start: He cares about no-one but himself, he's matured by the time the story starts and his intelligence is at its peak. As a complete character, he needed none of the melodramatic twists added to the first movie.
L, Light's greatest rival, was also a complete character from the start. Everything you need to know about him is visible from the moment you first see him: An eccentric genius, who doesn't care about appearances and an obvious loner - His character was based on the AS spectrum. The author didn't need to go into detail about his past at the orphanage in order to develop him; you could guess what happened based on his personality.
Many people would view a lack of character development as a serious negative, but in Death Note the characters being complete from the start made for a battle between geniuses from the outset. The focus was almost entirely on the progression of the story and it worked brilliantly.

Exactly. I don't understand how one could call the Death Note characters complex or well-developed, especially in comparison to Ledouche or Suzaku. There wasn't any need for it either, since DN's focus was on story progression. You can like Light, think he was cool and interesting (I'd definitely agree), and a great, fascinating character overall, but don't claim he was complex.

Light is indeed a truly fascinating character. His selfishness and God complex raised some very interesting questions, making me seriously sit down and think about if evil truly exists (I concluded that only selfishness exists) and how our world would react to a real Kira. There aren't many (if any) characters in anime who can cause such deep thinking, which just goes to show what sort of an impact Death Note can have on viewers.
The reason Lelouch is currently on my MAL favourite character list and Light isn't is down to Lelouch's character development. Lelouch could still turn out to be Light V.2 by the end of the series, depending on what happens to Nunnally, but no-one can deny that his character has had a lot of development over the course of the story.
The only significant difference between the two is their human side. Light would've more than willingly killed his entire family if he needed to without hesitation just to stay alive himself, meaning there was no way to take him on an emotional journey and no way to develop him. Lelouch is pretty much the exact opposite emotionally, his love for his sister driving him and keeping him from turning into a monster like Light. However, it's very easy for Lelouch to turn into someone as selfish as Light - What would happen to him emotionally if his sister were to be killed? I think he'd keep going as Zero, allowing rage to guide him instead of love.
Moving back to the main point: Although I can understand people attacking Death Note for not developing the main characters, Death Note wouldn't be what it is if we were forced to watch Light go to school and see a full (and needless) episode about how hard L had it growing up. It was nice to be dealing with fully developed characters instead of whiny 13 year old mecha pilots.
Edit: Bah, screw reading my post - Just compare their insane laughter.

Good analysis...for me Light and Lelouch are both among my favorite characters but I do like Lelouch more for the reason u posted. They both operate in very similar manners but Lelouch looks out for his family while Light would kill his own if need be. The main reason I like Light is because if I ever got my hands on a Death Note I would use it in the same way as he did. Plus the way he schemes and manipulates people is genius. Maybe I'm a little messed up haha

Why the hell did I get an urge to laugh along with Light? :arg
Personality aside, Light's laugh has four phases that fluctuate as opposed to Lelouch's two consistent ones.
Light: *shuddering* Hnnhnnhnn hmmhnnhmmhmm *inhale* nghehennhnnhehehe *deep breath* nynguhuhuhuhu *deep breath* nyuhuhuHUAHUAHAHAHA *deep breath* AHAHAHAHAhahahaha *deep breath* nyuhuhuahahahaahh *inhale* ........ That's right........ I am Kira.
Lelouch: Hnghnghnghnghnghng *deep breath* HAHAHAhahahaha *deep breath* HAHAHAhahahaha *deep breath* HAHAHAhahahaha! *deep breath* HAHAHAhahahahaha

I don't think anyone really claimed that L was a "great" character (as far as depth goes). I thought he was interesting in the sense he didn't really believe in "right" or "wrong" and was just doing his job. Not the character with the greatest of depth but I found him much more interesting than the little faggot who plays with dolls or most other characters in Geass for that matter. (Though it's not like I'd call any character in CG as pioneering and revolutionary)
Then again, they probably had to beat Fudaka with a stick to keep away from this.
lol wut?
CG is a good show but it's hardly the best of anything. (especially not the best of mecha)

Both the ultimate weakness and strength of CG is that it doesn't concentrate on one genre.

I was expecting an interesting debate, but all that really ended up happening was me making some long posts about Death Note and everyone voting Code Geass on the poll. Considering most who visit this section have watched both series, this tells me we're in urgent need of more debaters and less masterbators in this section.
Maybe it would've been a better idea to make a 'Lelouch vs. Light' thread?

Even though Death Note gets lame after the second half of the anime/manga I still say I prefer it over Code Geass. Well the first part of Death Note at least. L just holds a special place in my heart. Code Geass on the other hand just has too many unrealistic things. I mean what the hell is up with Suzaku being able to out run a turret with a .05 second lag time as well as run on the side of a wall and kick the turret down that's attached to the sealing. What the hell is he a super ninja or something? That's just one of many unrealistic things that bug me.
Also it's freaking ridiculous how much crap Code Geass has in common with Death Note. It's like the writers couldn't think of anything so they stole a bunch of idea's from Death Note. Yes the comparisons have already been made many times but I thought they were done with that whole take ideas from Death Note phase they went through in the beginning of the show but no, they continue to amaze me. The most recent similarity being the main character given false memories, and then regaining them to become what they were once before (Kira/Zero).
I don't mean to bash Code Geass, in fact I like it a lot. I've just been meaning to vent about the whole amnesia bs for a while now.

No need I am here.
I find this thread quite a dilema for me though and the reason is what someone mentioned earlier. They are two different series. I like both DN and CG for completely different reasons. So I shall list the good and bad points (IMO) of both series.
Death Note good points-
-Amazing battles of wit and intellect. I will never understand about people who complain about the back-and-forth battles. I find this one of the most appealing elements.
-A semi-realistic setting with a supernatural element thrown in.
-A unique idea in the form of the Death Note and concept of Shingami's (At least from what I have read and seen.)
-Some of the most supsenful, Hollywood worthy, action scenes ever like....
Higiuchis car chase towards the end of ep 23
Storming of Mello's hideout in SWAT gear.
Light's defeat.
L VS KIRA on the live broadcast.
These are the scenes that made the series really worth watching. I love to see the stuff like Higiuchi getting his tires shot out and flying into a wall.
-Personal appeal with the the use of Police, FBI, CIA, ect ect. I watch alot of shows like CSI, Law and Order, Burn Notice, Closer. I also read a few Sherlock Homes books back in middle school and really loved the stuff.
Now onto the Bad Death Note Points-
-Unlikeable main characters and semi-unlikeable antagonists in the form of L. I like Near alot mostly because of his cool dice buildings. I personally hated Mello since he was little gangster punk to me who had annoying habit with chocolate.
Light for me was impossible to like. He was going to kill his own sister, lead his father to his death, killed numerous FBI agents and one of the spouses of the aforementioned agents.
-The actual likable characters all get screwed in the end. Light's father was the only one who actual maybe had a bit of happiness in this whole mess. I felt so shitty after watching that episode, the Yagami family was so screwed when Light got the Death Note.
-This is a personal thing but the whole "all death is equal" bit at the end bugs me and you got to MU (Nothingness).
All in all Death Note is a series I watch over and over again because it's like a cool action movie like series. Lots of wit, action, and supernatural. It feels like to me a twisted Sherlock homes series.
Now before I go onto Code Geass I want to mention I did vote CG over Death Note because if I did have to chose it would CG.
Code Geass Good-
-Mecha clever. No flying around in space or in the air but on the ground which makes it interesting for me since things like RPG's , unstable roads, terrain ect- matters. I also happen to like the design for the Knightmares. I would like to mention though that they aren't my favorite mecha-Eureka Seven is- but that is for another time.
-Nearly all characters likable and sympathizable. Even the antagonists. This is mostly because I have a hard time hating characters.- Death Note being one of the few exceptions- that doesn't mean however I want Brit to win, I just happen to like the characters like Lloyd, Bartley for his few appearances, and maybe even Zino and Anya now. Lelouch is also likable for the obvious reasons (He fights for Justice, clever, and an overall fun character).
The only characters I truly dislike are Nina and Suzaku to an extent. Suzaku is someone who has a good chance to redeem himself in my eyes but Nina is just annoying biggot who needs to take the stick out of her ass.
-The setting. I love the use of Brittanian as this future British super-power and the use of the Knight's and Noble court rank system appeals to the "magic and swords" kid in me. That is the use of the Geass as the magic part and the Knightmare as swords part I guess.
The only parts I truly disliked about the series was the bits of fan service but at least its not to over the top when they show them and they are usually shown in good humor.
At any rate its obvious that I do like Code Geass a smig more than Death Note. But like I stated before I like them for different reasons. Death Note for it battles of wit and Code Geass for its epic-like plot line. Death Note is something I would see in a single movie, Code Geass is something like a Star Wars trilogy for me.
I'd also like to say at this point I could give two flying shits about the blogger complain about in Code Geass mostly because of biased favoritism of the series, but more because it makes me wonder why bother getting your hopes up for Season 2 if Season 1 "ruined it for you?
But hey its your opinion and I respect. Mostly. Okay maybe just a little.

I find myself preferring Code Geass to Death note.
Death Note's characters felt lackluster but as people had said, they were basically complete when the series started. I actually liked Light and Near more than L. Death Note's plot progression also got very boring at certain points. Beginning of the Yotsuba investigation being one and Light/Near preparing to face each other one last time being another.
But those weak build-up parts made for parts of the series I liked best. The final chapters between Light, Ryuk and Near along with Higuchi's capture/L's death.
Code Geass appeals more overall because Lelouch is a better character to me than Light though I liked him and Suzaku/Britannia make more interesting adversaries for Lelouch than Light's enemies.
Problem with Code Geass like others have said is that there is so much in it that the focus is spread out a bit too much. Ashford was tolerable and even understandable in the first season while in this second one it feels like filler and is being shoved on us.
Everyone having their memories altered is even worse since it is like they re-winded time like in Legend of Zelda:Majora's Mask. >_>
Anyway, despite that I prefer CG to DN.

I preferred Death Note over Code Geass although I do agree its hard to compare the 2 just because both series have main characters that have the chess master persona. Code Geass has a more mainstream touch to it due to its mecha action, fan service, etc so its definitely going to be more popular but I thought the Death Note anime was executed really well.
Manga readers will remember Part 2 of Death Note being really slow and Madhouse made it thrilling and bearable to watch. Even though the ending was a cop out of the original ending, I thought it was done really well (I guess mostly because the music played at the end was really beautiful to listen to. Hehe) And I think I'm one of the few that still enjoyed the 2nd part of the show (Without L) even if it wasn't as good as the first part. :)
When I look at the two 10 years down the road. I will definitely remember Death Note more than Code Geass.

I don't think it's a coincidence that 2 anime series with characters as similar as Lelouch and Light appeared on the anime scene at around the same time - I think the Code Geass writer(s) read Death Note and based Lelouch's character on Light, making some alterations to stop them being identical.
As the series goes on and Lelouch's humanity is stripped away from him piece by piece, Lelouch and Light will become more and more alike. We already saw Lelouch act just like Light would've done during EP4; when he talked about using and throwing Rollo away like trash with a smile on his face.
-Unlikeable main characters and semi-unlikeable antagonists in the form of L. I like Near alot mostly because of his cool dice buildings.
That's unusual - Most people love L and hate Near. L was quirky, funny and unusual, while Near was simply a much younger, much less interesting version of L.
Light for me was impossible to like. He was going to kill his own sister, lead his father to his death, killed numerous FBI agents and one of the spouses of the aforementioned agents.
Light wasn't meant to be likeable; he was meant to be interesting. Ryuk followed Light because he saved him from boredom and so did the readers/viewers of Death Note.
There are very few 'evil' characters who are realistic - Most turn out to have a tragic past or are impossible to take seriously. However, with the realistic setting and day to day life of Light, it was very easy to be believe that Light could've jumped from the story into the real world.
but more because it makes me wonder why bother getting your hopes up for Season 2 if Season 1 "ruined it for you?
You've lost me here?
If you're talking about me, I thought S1 was absolutely amazing, my only issues being the odd filler episode. The series ended with the best possible cliffhanger - One where it was absolutely unpredictable.
S2 has been one huge disappoint so far: The continuation of the cliffhanger was anti-climatic and far too simple, the new episodes have been repeats of episodes from S1 and some some of the magic S1 had seems to have been lost somewhere along the way. My expectations have dropped significantly after the first 4 episodes.
Manga readers will remember Part 2 of Death Note being really slow and Madhouse made it thrilling and bearable to watch. Even though the ending was a cop out of the original ending, I thought it was done really well (I guess mostly because the music played at the end was really beautiful to listen to. I agree with your post 100%.
Due to the amount of manga chapters that were cut from part 2 of Death Note, I started reading the manga alongside the anime. It shocked me how slow and boring part 2 of the manga was... It was difficult for me to keep reading it. Reading the manga made me appreciate the effort Madhouse had put into keeping the series thrilling after 'Ladies Night'.
Although a lot of people still seem to dislike part 2 even after Madhouse's best efforts, I found part 2 extremely enjoyable to watch; near enough as enjoyable as part 1. With stunning new music, Mikami and Light's voice actor it would've been difficult for me not to have found part 2 of the anime orgasmic to watch.
I still say say the worst part of the anime was the pre-Higuchi Yotsuba stuff that happened during Light's memory loss. I haven't heard too many people complain about the one part of the series that almost made me drop it...
Once Code Geass is over I don't believe it will hold the same sort of place in my memories that Death Note does. Death Note had none of the stupidity and/or fan service Code Geass does, had no filler, was much darker and never tried to blend genres together... In other words, Death Note is more up my street.
In Code Geass R2, I'm starting to notice parts of Lights personality traits in Lelouch which weren't there in Season One. I don't particularly like that. Maybe I just have been interpreting scenes incorrectly.
It's pretty obvious you'll see Lelouch act more like Light as the series progresses. In S1 Lelouch had Nunnally to keep him balanced; to keep him from turning into nothing more than a revenge driven murderer... What does he have now?
Think about it: Lelouch is Light with a human side, and Lelouch's humanity has been been stripped away bit by bit over the course of the story. The murdering, the betrayal of Suzaku, the accident with Euphemia, Nunnally... It's all mounting up.
On a related note, the best part of S1 for me was after Lelouch discovered Suzaku was piloting the Lancelot; when he locked himself inside a knightmare. His laugh was a combination of anger, frustration, sadness and betrayal - That was the first time Lelouch lost it. Lelouch and Light truly are the kings of insane laughter.

They are both good series, but I prefer CG. I remember last summer when I heard how great CG was on various forums, so I decided to check it out. Once I started watching I was completely hook. I watch just about half of the series the entire day. Whereas DN was interesting, but it didn't completely drawn me in like CG did. R2 so far been very entertaining and I think it has potential to be on par with S1 or even greater. I also found the characters more likeable in CG as well. In DN the only characters I really cared about was L and Light. Though I felt Light was a bastard, and I was pulling for L to win. Lelouch on other hand has easily became my favorite character in any anime/manga.

I'd have to lean toward Death Note, the half with L especially, the Near Arc is not nearly as good as the first half of Death Note or Code Geass. I just found the mind games to be much more intense and enjoyable in Death Note. Also the art / animation in Death Note was top notch, some of the best I've ever seen.
