What would I read/watch if I wanted to get into the W40K universe?

You should pick up an omnibus, which collects three or more complete stories in one hefty tome. They're only 11 dollars and are a great value. If you want to read about Space Marines, I'd suggest the Space Wolf Omnibus. If you want to read about an Inquisitor, I'd suggest the Eisenhorn Omnibus. Finally, if you want to read about a more normal citizen of the Imperium, then I'd suggest the Ciaphas Cain Omnibus. The last one is darkly humorous as well, but you can't go wrong with any of the three.

Actually no the Zentraedi and humans are allies. Those ones are called Vajra and not much else is known. Iirc apart from Macross 2, all the Macross series is part of the same universe, just further in the future (except for the prequel, Zero). Think Star Trek not Gundam. I agree with the comparison to the original, although they're all similar to an extent. It is the 25th anniversary so it's understandable to a degree.
