View Full Version : The Three Sides of Lelouch

So I did some thinking about the Character of Zero. And I have come to this interesting conclusion: There are three Lelouch's.
Or rather two masks and one true self. And with each of them a girl. :awesome
Zero: That is his persona as the revolutionary. As Suzaku said, its that side that lies, but also his public face. This side is very much intended as a flawless hero, a legend, hardly human. With the identity of Zero he presents the idea of divine retribution, of justice incarnate. He cannot present emotion as Zero and it is with this he makes his epic speeches.
And for Zero he has the arm candy of Kallen. She creates a good foil for this personality as she is the hand of his divine wrath. She also is interesting in the fact that even with knowing that is just a mask, she choses her dedication solely to the mask and the man under the mask is a pervert lol.
Lulu: This is his Clark Kent persona. The curious thing is wondering why he continues to keep this side. Maybe its friendship, maybe he wants an alibi, who knows. But this side is identified as weak, vice president and just known for being a smart slacker who loves chess. Lulu is who he was largely before he met CC in episode 1 of each season. And it is who he presents himself to friends as.
For Lulu, there is of course Shirley. She loves him but from all apparent signs, it appears one sided. Lulu however at the very least is fond of and cares for her. He at the very least was very sad having lost her when he had to Geass her.
Lelouch: This is his true self. And with it we see all his agony, inner emotions, often through internal monologues and discussion with CC. Lelouch is human. Zero is not. In the midst of battle and Zero sees something or does something that horrifies him it fades to green and we see though his mask and see his internal agony. It is here we see him at his most Machiavellian as well. He comes up with those strategies as Lelouch as when he is in the mech, he almost always takes his mask off. As Zero, he has no regrets for his actions, all self determination, however as Lelouch he questions himself and his actions and although he is convinced of his actions, he is still human. Zero felt nothing for killing Euphie, Lelouch did.
And of course, the third lady in his life, CC. As CC said, she is the only one who knows his true self. She's been in there since the beginning, she'll be there to the end. She saves him at his weakest and vice versa. They are accomplices and partners.
I don't know what there is really to discuss here, these were musings of my understandings. :sag

Haha that was actually a really good read there sun. I do agree with you wholeheartedly. I know some people may not agree, but that sounds pretty perfect to me.
That's one of the many things I like about Lelouch's character, his different sides and how they all effect his true self. He's really an awesome character, and definitely one of my favorites of all time.

You more or less summed it up; Lelouch is the interesting character we all (well, nearly all :amuse ) think that he is because of the fact that he has these three personas, and we watch fascinated as he switches between these through the story, playing the role he needs to do at the moment (which admitedly all humans do, but Lelouchj manages to do it in a way that is more interesting than most smile-big ). Though I suspect that at some point, his Lulu and Zero character might fade, leaving only his Lelouch persona....

This is a good read bro, and you hit the nail on the head for Lelouch. I agree with the other posters this makes Lelouch a well developed character and he has instantly became my favorite main character of all time.

Good read
I am surprise that Lulu still havent developed a multiple personality disorder ( Is it a right sentence?) in this kind of situation..I mean, he still under his own control....

It's when Lelouch and Zero start to become one that we'll see problems.

I agree. When he starts seeing himself as the mask, thats when his ego gets to the point where he will fall. However it is worth noting, if I didn't already, he was pretty much all Lulu back when he had the false memories as the trauma of losing his mother and sister defined who he was.

I think it'll be interesting to see that happen. I just hope after he loses his humanity and becomes Zerouch (lol) they don't kill him.

Nice read, I'm surprised I've missed this.
Anyways, I liked the analysis. One of the main reasons he's appealing as a character is because of the personalities he entails when coming to the different situations he's placed in. It's interesting to see where his character goes for this main reason. Near the end of last season, it almost felt like the Lelouch side was losing and his more human feelings were being overcome with the more leader like Zero.
It'll be interesting to see if the "Zero" persona is the one which will end up being the one he carries as the dominant when this show comes to a close. I would hope it isn't, because that would lead to tragedy. Besides, I like the human aspect, it's what keeps his character fresh because of the internal struggles he experiences.

You sir, deserve a rep.
I love characters analyses, since characters are one of, if not, the most important qualities that make up a good story. After all, it should be the characters that move the plot along, and not vice versa.
Anyway, I agree with your analysis. One of the reasons why I find Lelouch such an appealing character is because of all his many "faces", how they mix and make up his character as a whole. :nod

All the reasons why I love Lelouch and why he's my favorite character, he has so many details and effort put into him it's amazing.

I don't see Lelouch as being so divided. Lulu and Zero are roles he plays, but he is always Lelouch.

This is kind of a given, considering the fact that he has 2 secret identities.

Another interesting note is that when we're witness to Lelouch during his Zero scene's show him nude, kind of like showing us his true inner self, no secrets. Those are usually the green shaded scenes.
nice read and nice analysis
pretty much agree on this
