For instance, imagine that you're an Eleven, watching some subtitled English flick.
One character says to another - "I love you!" - it's obvious what it means.

However, imagine someone says "she really likes you".
What does that mean? It could mean either "she is fond of you" OR "she has romantic feelings for you."

In reality, a Japanese person will possibly never use "aishiteru/aishite imasu" in their lives - it's a very strong, very uncommon phrase, equivalent to saying something like "I have passion for you" in English. Most people who want to show affection - romantic or platonic - would use "suki desu". "Daisuki desu" for strong feelings - including love.

Therefore, Shirley's "daisuki desu" can be interpreted as EITHER "I like you" i.e I'm fond of you (something Lelouch probably knew already) or "I love you" i.e "I have romantic feelings for you".
Now ask yourself what you would be more likely to say to someone when you have 24.3 seconds to live.
I'd say Eclipse had it right.

Oh, and uh -
Go ask a "translator" if you don't believe me. :)

Actually, MKVs are higher quality than AVIs. Hence the bigger download size (usually).

And the codecs thing, it's not "a special codec" most standard codec packs include MKV support.

Anybody know of a good fansub that are still using the DVDs/high quality vid for series 1, GG/dominoes kinda quit on me :(
I say go with BakaWolf for h264 DVD rips. I don't know about gg's progress, but BakaWolf has fully subbed the whole first season.

Raw is AVI and opening with VLC you can manually add the subs.
