a is pronounced like in fall, its not exactly like this, but i cannot find sth other, so
e is pronounced like in elephant (or sth like that)
i is like the english e (like in wind ...)
well, thats it.

oh, and this question "how many days are you going on vacation?"
you would maybe say "Wie viele Tage bist du im Urlaub?"

Oh, I could help with that! As far as my knowledge goes, this is how it would be typed:

hk. thanx. i never write big letters or sth like that when i post at the internet. you must have had really much to do if you had to type in all those things. its really good! only one thing. whats "grüb dich"? im german and ive never heard that before. neither have my friends. the german translation for "hi" is just "hi". we dont have a german word for that. grüb dich sounds like an austrian word. but ya list is cool!!!

Oops... That's suppose to be 'grüß dich'. It's from my German I book, so if you still haven't heard of it then I have no idea. XD; Many of the translations in my book aren't literal; if possible, I put in the literal translation.
But yes, I do have a lot of time on my hands. Today was the last day of school and I've gotten my own computer. I spent hours upon hours last weekend writing all of the information from my German book. Now I get to spend hours upon hours typing it all.

So, Dreams, what is it like in Germany? Isn't Germany noted for making good quality instruments? Violins atleast. I want to get a Gemeinhardt Flute and Piccolo. Lovely little woodwinds they are.

umm, i know "grüß dich", but i usually dont use it. you can just say "hi". thats enough.
i guess it would be useless to show you some of our grammar and stuff, cause nobody in germany knows about it either. it keeps gettin changed, so dont bother learning it :D
there was a grammar reform a few years ago, and now they plan on changing it again this year. its horrible! so i post some phrases and words here:

Hello everyone I'm a little bit familiar with german I've had one year so far and soon will go into my second. Since English and German are quite similar then German must be a variation of latin. Anyway I'd like to contribute to those wanting to learn German.
Like English, German has gender except inanimate objects can have gender also, this is identified by the direct articles Die, Das, and Der. (will replace any umlauted letters with ae, oe, and ue and essets will be ss.)

Die is feminine
Das is neuter or neutral
Der is masculine
All of these articles all mean "The"
Here are some Nouns to go with these articles.

Der: Ball, Computer, Mann, Onkel, Tisch, Fernseher
Das: Maedchen, Telefon, Boot, Buch, Auto
Die: Schuhe, Tante, CD, Toilette

Well those are some examples. If someone could plz cover the cases too, over the summer I haven't been able to study much so I need a little review on that. hope everyone benefits from my contribution. :D

ß - called an esset has the sound of a double s.

For the letters with the dots them. the dots are called umlauts which modify the sound of the letter.

It's not really different. I think all the words are the same. Can be wrong though but when I talked to austrians it was the same as when I talked to every other german. Sounds a lot like bavarian german imo but still german.

Wrong. Unlike American and British english, which often have differences even in spelling, Austrian and German german are the same, except in pronounciation. But even in Austria, the pronounciation vastly differs - I know that for sure.

Still, german and that what they speak in Switzerland is another thing ... I have yet to meet a case of language-mangling mutilation that is worse than that. Sure, Schweizerdeutsch (ugh, don't ask me for a translation - it means "german that the swiss speak") is in essence german, but ... it's not, really. :D

"Wie geht es dir?" (familiar "du" - you can use it at a community like this)
or just "Wie geht es?" or "Wie gehts?" (short form; without a personal word - mostly under friends)
or, if you want ask your boss or a foreign person "Wie geht es Ihnen?" (not "Sie")

It's hard with the "du" and "Sie" for english people, hm?
You don't need to say "Sie/Ihnen" for every foreign person at the web. On german websites and forums, it's normal to use "du" - especially under teens and communitys. The "Sie/Ihnen" is mostly used by business-sites and commercial things.

At Reality it's another thing, but for web you can remember:
private sites/communitys -> "du"
business sites/commercial -> "Sie/Ihnen"
(*wisper* germans often don't know which one either ... e.g. ebay)

I hate it if people say "Sie" to me ... bäääh ... :P

I guess that means the others think I'm better at German than they are, which, given the nature of the slackers in my class, is probably true, but I'm not really all that great, I guess. It's hard to tell, really. About the only thing most of my class remembers is the story my best friend wrote a couple years ago. We were working with verbs, and our project was to write and illustrate a story using 20 sentences, each with a different verb. For each of his sentences, he used a character by the name of Hans Hähnchen (Hähnchen means chicken). He went through most of the verbs he knew, doing things like meeting, liking, riding, playing games with, throwing, feeding, and watering Hans. Finally, he ended the story with him cutting Hans, reading a cookbook, baking him, eating him, and, last but not least, wearing his feathers on his head (he had a picture of a Native American dude with a fancy headdress). He used the exact same chicken picture he printed from his computer on almost every page, except for the ones where Hans was already dead. For himself, there was always a crudely drawn stick figure. I still crack up thinking about it.

It's hard to tell, really. About the only thing most of my class remembers is the story my best friend wrote a couple years ago. We were working with verbs, and our project was to write and illustrate a story using 20 sentences, each with a different verb. For each of his sentences, he used a character by the name of Hans Hähnchen (Hähnchen means chicken). He went through most of the verbs he knew, doing things like meeting, liking, riding, playing games with, throwing, feeding, and watering Hans. Finally, he ended the story with him cutting Hans, reading a cookbook, baking him, eating him, and, last but not least, wearing his feathers on his head (he had a picture of a Native American dude with a fancy headdress). He used the exact same chicken picture he printed from his computer on almost every page, except for the ones where Hans was already dead. For himself, there was always a crudely drawn stick figure. I still crack up thinking about it.

The problem is the Germans changed theyer gramatics like 2 ore 3 times in the last years, so I also make sometimes mistakes, because they are a lot words that you write now different so everybody can make mistakes. It's a stupid sitaution:)

The basic word, it's "geil".
If you say it to a female, like a woman you say: "geile Frau".
Or if you say it to a man: "geiler Mann".
Or you say it to a girl: "geiles Mädchen".
That's german language confusion^^

"geil" basicly means "lustful/horny" and is a vulgar word.
But it's very normal to use it in a way like "cool/def/wicked/sexy". I'm 25 years and i use it often alternative to "cool" and my son is 5 years and use it often to ;)

slang: "boar, is die geil!" -> "wow, what a sexy girl" :cool

Da ist aus Sicht der Engländer die Übersetzung hot<->heiss sinnvoller, da nicht so verwirrend.

It's intersting to see how many people here are learning German. I was on exchange to Australia just a couple of months ago and some of my friends had had German the year before. So they were kind of proud of being able to say a couple of words or sentences in German. The ones who didn't know any German wanted to know all the swear words first.That amused the other two German exchange students and me to no end. Sometimes when my 13-year-old host sister and I were bored she would say an English word for me to translate. That was kind of fun, actually.

Besonders wenn man einen Austausch in ein englischsprachiges Land macht und sich dann nach der Rückkehr mit dem Beamtendeutsch des Schülerticketantrags herumschlagen muss. Oh, I could help with that! As far as my knowledge goes, this is how it would be typed:

Your German is really good, Kiba-kun, but I guess you wouldn't say, 'kontrolle'. Just 'test', 'arbeit', 'klausur' or something like that is fine. Oh, you'd say 'helft mir' or 'hild mir'. 'Mich' isn't the right (....?) for this. Umm, well, in English you say, "I need to study...now," but in German you don't say, 'Ich brauche üben." You'd rather say, "Ich muss üben," or "Ich sollte üben." German is much more difficult than English, so I think your German is really great.
PS: I've been learning English for five years now and I know I make a lot of mistakes, so don't mind telling me when I do something wrong.

but our biggest problem is not using the words whom and nor when they should be used, but even I rarely use them unless I'm writing a report or something.

When I'm talking, my english is alot different from what I write.
You wouldn't believe how many times most americans say the word "like", some people use it in almost every sentence they say.

ich wohne auch in deutschland, komme aber ursprünglich aus amerika. bin zweisprachig aufgewachsen, verlerne/vergesse jetzt aber leider mein englisch, da ich nicht mehr auf die schule gehe und meine freunde aus den kasernen nicht mehr treffen kann, weil die alle in den usa studieren. :cry
von daher ist auch mein deutsch besser als mein englisch.

also: ich bin ja ganz neu hier, doch weil ich hier gesehen habe, dass so ein "großer" andrang herrscht, deutsch zu lernen, da will ich halt auch meinen beitrag leisten^^

ich wohne in italien, in südtirol um genau zu sein, das heißt ich spreche sowohl deutsch (muttersprache) als auch italienisch und englisch (zweitsprachen, die natürlich nicht so gut). außerdem ist meine mutter aus deutschland, was bedeutet, dass ich auch den einen oder anderen dialekt hin und wider unbewusst verwende^^

also: sollte jemand irgendwelche fragen haben (deutsch oder italienisch), dann stehe ich zur verfügung und werde alles in meiner macht stehende tun, um euch zu helfen...

SO halb XD Ich bin von meiner Großmutter (die selbst in Niederösterreich groß wurde und demnach auch Dialekt spricht) hochdeutsch erzogen worden damit ich in der Schule besser bin... was auch genützt hat, denn Deutsch ist mein bestes Fach ^^".

hmm... bei uns in südtirol gibt es in jedem tal nen andren dialekt - und das in ner region von gerade mal 400.000 einwohnern. da ich im heim (= so ne art internat) bin, lern ich so ziemlich alle dialekte. doch als stadtmensch (wie ich einer bin) kommt man mit dem dialekt nie so gut zurecht wie andere und auch nich mit den traditionen, aber das is ja n' ganz anderes thema. meine großeltern sind auch aus deutschland (aus göppingen) und reden deshalb oft schwäbisch. ich verstehs zwar, aber auch nur weil sie so reden, dass ichs auch versteh ^^

schlimmer ists in italien. da gilt wohl die selbe stammregel: je weiter südlich man kommt, desto weniger versteht man. ein beispiel:
deutsch: "was sagst du?"
gewöhnliches italienisch: "che stai a dire?" (is eher umgangssprachlich)
südlicher dialekt: "ke sta di?" und so gesprochen [keschtadi] (ja, alles zusammen^^)

und das sind noch di leichter verständlichen phrasen....

Das sagt man viel ofter uber die Deutsche sprache, das ist namlich viel lauter !! :wink
Ich finde Hollandisch eine tolle sprache aber wurde auch Italienisch nehmen.
Weil ich ja schon Hollandisch und Deutsch kan.

Ich hätte jetzt gedacht das Italienisch am schwierigsten ist aber wenn es einfacher ist als die andren zwei sprachen,ist es wohl besser.Ich hatte am anfang erst for holländisch zu wählen ich dachte das waäre am einfacsten:P
