99% of the German students learn English in school, most of them starting in elementary. There are a lot more countries in Europe, like France, Spain, Italy and there German is pretty popular (second to English, of course).

You also kinda need to see that at one point in history, German was actually widely spoken throughout the world. Heck, German missed one vote to become the official language in the US back then! Don't forget that Germany also held colonies in Africa which means German is still widely spoken and understood there as well.

Plus if you think a language/culture is interesting you might still want to learn it just because you want to. Example: I'm learning Japanese. I've only met like two Japanese people in my life, I'm not likely to need it in my job and looking at my bank account, I'm not likely to go to Japan any time in the next few years. Why am I learning it then? Because I think it's an awesome language, beautiful and far from anything I've learned so far.
I don't see why anyone wouldn't use the same reasoning for German :)

German is also a very difficult language, so if you just want to learn it a bit because it sounds cool you shouldn't do it :wink

Tried a few self learning programs and freebies as well, but I just can't seem to get myself focused and organized enough to do it. Hopefully, once I'm done with grad school, I can take some free time to attend some classes at a local JC/CC.

Yeah, I've thought about that, but I thought I should at least get a basic grasp of the grammar first, that way its a little easier for me to understand German films w/ subs. I actually did this exact method when I learned Chinese, except, I actually speak Cantonese to begin with, I simply did not know how to read.

There are many ways to say it with varying connotations and nuances.
"Heidi Klum ist heiß." should do just fine. It sounds a bit 80ies-ish, imho, but it most closely resembles the English original.

I'm doing some research on 15th century Germany, and who better to ask than a German? xD

I have some questions, and I may have more later on:
1. Was Metz, France once under the rule of Germany around the 15th century?
2. What was the kind of dialect of German spoken in the 15th century? Is it considerably different from today's spoken German? (I heard somewhere that its called 'low-German', correct?
3. Were there 15th century monks in Germany as well?
4. Are there any 15th century buildings still up in Germany? Like churches, old buildings, old 15th century statues and whatnot?

Okay, so many of you guys probably won't have an answer. But since most of you guys live in Germany, you probably know more about its history.

2. Yes, the dialect back then was different. Nowadays without any background knowledge it is quite hard for us to understand texts written during that time.
4. Sure, there are quite some. Especially in many smaller towns you can still find many historical buildings, since those have been less destructed by the war.

What do you mean with your third question? There were monks in Germany, just as everywhere else in Europe I suppose, but is there anything special you want to know about them?

There is no word for happy birthday in German. We say "Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag" (congratulations for your birthday).

Lol, I totally gave up learning new rules over and over again, so now I'm writing a very strange mixture (sometimes I even use "dass" and "daß" in the same text :facepalm). German has become even more complicated than it already was :(

@ Jogostar: das geht mir mit englisch, französisch und latein genauso wie dir mit deutsch ^^, aber wenns man öfters schreibt, ließt und spricht dann gehts irgendwann. kannst dich ja mit deinem vater unterhalten wenn du es ein bisschen aufbessern willst. mach ich jedenfalls bei englisch mit meiner schwester und meiner tante.

Thanks, it went okay, but it was a gentle re-introduction as it was the first lesson. Just went over the basics like forming verbs, simple sentences and the like. Enjoyed getting back in to it though, looking forward to the next lesson. :)

Deutsch ist eigentlich sehr schwer, ich glaube 6 Monate reichen nicht für ein wirkliches gutes Deutsch zu sprechen...

Vielleicht ist es einfacher wenn man eine ähnliche Sprache (wie Niederländisch oder Schwedisch) kennt oder spricht, aber wenn man, wie ich, ’ne Sprache wie Spanisch spricht, dann dauert es eine lange weile…

Das mit dem Groß- und Kleinschreibung Regeln hab ich nicht so viele Probleme. Was ich besondere Schwierigkeiten hab ist mit die verdammte Artikel. Mann, ist es schwer an allen zu erinnern! Und weil Spanisch meine Muttersprache ist, die Aussprache von die ‚r’ fällt mir manchmal echt schwierig. :arg

Heute habe ich im Zug nach Köln eine Gruppe britischer Schüler gesehen. Sie machten wohl eine Klassenreise. Auf jeden Fall hat sich die Lehrerin mit einem Mann unterhalten und die konnte so gut deutsch, ich war echt beeindruckt, ein paar Schüler auch! Die Akzent war außerdem sehr cool.
