LONDON (AFP) - An online game that encourages prepubescent girls to contemplate breast enlargement surgery and extreme crash diets to achieve a 'perfect figure' has been criticised by worried parent groups and health experts.

The 'Miss Bimbo' game is aimed at girls aged 9 to 16 and has attracted 200,000 members since opening its British site in February. The website sparked controversy when it was introduced in France, where it attracted 1.2 million players.

The young girls are encouraged to monitor the weight, wardrobe, wealth and happiness of their virtual character to create "the coolest, richest and most famous bimbo in the world." The girls compete to earn "bimbo dollars" which can use to buy larger breasts, diet pills, nip-and-tuck surgery, sexy lingerie and nightclub outfits.

Healthcare professionals have warned that website encourages anorexia and bulimia by advising the girls to remain "waif thin".

"A lot of children will get caught up with the extremely damaging and appalling messages." Dee Dawson -- the medical director of the Rhodes Farm Clinic, which treats girls who suffer eating disorders -- told The Times.

The Parentkind group also condemned the site and warned that "Childrens innocence should be protected as far as possible "

A spokesman for the parents' group added: "It depends on the mindset of the child but the danger is that after playing the game , some will then aspire to have breast operations and take diet pills.

The Miss Bimbo site was created by French entrepreneur Nicholas Jacquart, who has moved to South London to promote the website in Britain.

I agree that this seems like a really horrible website for girls. It's going to teach them all the wrong ideas and make them very shallow. It's an extremely vain site.

Unfortunatly, I'm not sure if it can be shut down because of free speech.

I know it's just a game but this seems kind of extreme. It's worse than games with extreme violence in my opinion(I don't think those games actually cause violence).

today's parents/guardians need to better educate their children about the internet and it's potential downfalls. an FBI representative will be speaking to my son's 6th grade class on Friday regarding internet safety, i think this is an excellent idea

Well true. In a way it's to live out a fantasy so that you won't do it in real life.

But I can also certainly see where some girls would get the wrong idea with that site.

The FBI are agents of the fascist System. They will probably subtly brainwash the kids with right wing propaganda designed to prevent them from drinking at the well of knowledge that is the internet.

You guys are right though. However, I still think it's a pretty sad game.

Yes, because there's no correlation between bombarding children with unhealthy standards of beauty and children with unhealthy standards of beauty.

:facepalm

Sounds like a funny game for an adult, but it shouldn't be aimed at girls as young as 9. Violent videogames have age limits, because, yeah, younger kids are especially impressionable. There's no need to remove the game, but show some fucking responsiblity when picking your target audience. Like no one would be upset if GTA started targetting children that young.

Then again, parents always have the option of actually filtering what their children can and can't do and see, and shouldn't go crying to the authorities every time they fail as parents to protect their kids from inappropriate websites. Parental locks are there for a reason. Use them.

Wonder how many parents even know how to use parental locks.

Not sure why it is aimed at girls aged 9, just seems a little odd. I doubt girls that young even need to worry about boob jobs.

But hey, its a parents job to decide what their kids can and can't do, this is just something a parent will have to decide to say no on.

Besides, a girl must care about how she looks.

kids are kids, and they are easily impressionable. I think it is a horrible idea, that should be targeted to above and older, why the hell should a fucking 9 year old need to know about boob jobs and eating disorders? They should change the age range at least to adults.

I'd say this in a less "crass" way, granted, but he/she(?) has a point.

Call me cynical but I doubt a young girl accidentally stumbles upon the "Miss Bimbo" website while looking up instructions to her My Little Pony set or whatever innocuous bullshit little girls do.

I mean, I look up fucking porn and am a fairly active internet user yet I was oblivious to this site until, lo and behold, the news felt obligated to warn me and others about the prevalence and danger of this site. Funny that.

Rather than placing blame on this site people should be wondering how a 9 year old girl could be drawn to it in the first place.

Bottomline: Miss Bimbo isn't molding bimbos anymore than Grand Theft Auto is molding carjacking delinquents.

P.S. :laugh

This seems like another cheap way for parents to blame society for their kids "not turning out right" instead of educating their OWN children about these issues.

Parental locks are created for a REASON. USE THEM.

This is reminding me of when I was watching Dr. Phil and some parents blame BRATZ DOLLS for the way their daughters are dressing!

HEL-LO BRATZ DON'T GO TO THE STORES AND BUY THE CLOTHES FOR THESE GIRLS!!!

Obviously parents, if you don't approve of something, do something to prevent your child from being exposed to it. I understand that a parent can't be around their child all the time, that's where TALKING and COMMUNICATING with your child comes in.

Wolfarus
03-27-2008, 06:29 AM
Its idiotic, but harmless. PROVIDED that the girls' parents actually do their jobs and make sure they understand that this isnt "how" girls are supposed to act and aim to grow up as.

Yeah, I totally believe prepubescent girls are totally accountable for their actions.

At that age they're not very impressionable, and have developed a strong sense of fiction versus reality by then. For this reason we should lower the age of consent to nine. There's no reason to protect children, they should be accountable for their own actions.

Call of Duty has a certificate of 15. It's not aimed at minors.

THIS game, however, is. The concepts in this game are very adult and you wouldn't aim a film featuring these themes at children as young as 9, so why are games somehow different?

The problem is that too many people overreact to any kind of criticism to games, because normally game criticism IS bullshit. Games are usually rated responsibly and targeted at different age groups according to their content. But here's a game that doesn't give a fuck about that, and everyone's too wrapped up in the automatic knee-jerk defence of games to realise that this is actually wrong.

That and this game also apparently encourages minors to use premium phone lines to cash their game money. This is actually illegal.
