So I am a little confused about some things and hope that I can get some clear up. When Funimation Releases the One Piece DVD Boxset in May, since it's uncut, will it total up to the exact 143 episodes? For example, episode 46 and 47 (in the jap) featured two buggy side story episodes. Will we see them on the DVD?

Well, according to the runtime listed on Amazon it'll only be around thirteen episodes for the first release, which will put it up to Usopp's introduction in the Kuro Arc.

I thought Viz had the distribution rights to the episodes 4kids did. Did FUNIMATION get those rights back and is able to sell them redubbed now?

Well the DVD is called "First Voyage", so it seems like they did. Maybe Toei took the rights away from 4Kids/Viz and gave them to FUNi.

Umm that's a pretty good deal. You get 5.2 hours witch is easily over 2 of your average movies. Also compared to most anime witch is 4 episodes for $25-$30 it's over 3 times that. Then if we compare it to before there was many dubbed anime, well lets not even go there. In summary, it is worth it.

MP's right, it's a pretty good deal. Funimation usually has good prices for their boxsets, though Bandai is the best (gotta love those cheap "Anime Legends" boxsets!).

40 bucks? When was the price dropped to 40 bucks?

That is a good deal, though. Most anime DVDs which consist of 3-5 episodes cost around 20 bucks. So know we're getting double the price and more than double the amount of episodes. That's pretty sweet.

Once upon a time, in an age long before digisubs and torrents and even DVDs, legal, commercially released anime used to be really fucking expensive. It was common to pay $40 USD, plus tax, for a single anime film or a television/OAV episode or two on VHS tape with only one language track, no special features and burned on hardsubs. If you didn't like it, you could always import the raw Japanese VHS or laserdiscs, but that was several times more expensive than the domestic US releases even before taking shipping & handling and other mark-up fees into account.

By comparison, an approximate MSRP of $50 USD for thirteen episodes on DVD is so far beyond being a fucking steal that anyone who bitches about it just shows how ignorant and/or cheap he or she is. Not only that, but it's cheap even when compared to its contemporaries and to more than a few non-anime DVDs as well.

As such, there really is no legitimate reason whatsoever to bitch about the pricing on Funimation's One Piece DVDs. Even if they were completely bare bones, the runtime alone more than makes up for the price.

I'm not spending 50 dollars on 13 episodes. I rather just watch it online.

This is why i DO NOT buy anime DVDs, they are too fucking expensive. 4 episodes on a single disc for 20 bucks?...no thanks. I'll support the dub some other way like buying a keychain or some action figure.

Your choice but don't expect to see those licensed keychains or action figures unless you buy the DVDs. :wink

Do you buy DVDs at all, anime or otherwise, period? The reason why I ask is because if you think that an approximate MSRP of $50 USD for 300+ minutes of footage is a huge fucking deal while an average approximate MSRP of $20 to $25 USD for 90-100 minutes or so is fine, I really have to question the logic behind your flimsy justification for refusing to support the legal DVD release – a legal DVD release that is finally worth investing in – in favour of downloading illegal files.

I'll support the dub some other way like buying a keychain or some action figure.
Yeah, because buying a keychain or action figure will totally support the English dub from Funimation. Only, you know, not. Way to show that you really know sod all about the domestic anime industry, there. :notrust

But hey, I was right on both counts. Cheap and ignorant, just as I called it.

And yes, I do realise that this post of mine is rather aggressive in both tone and content. However, given the sad state of affairs that the domestic anime industry is in because of people like Supreme Alchemist Fan, I feel that my complete and utter contempt was more than well warranted. It's that attitude of "I'm too cheap to pay for legal anime; I'll just watch it online" that is at the top of the list of the biggest killers of the US anime industry, and it absolutely shits me because there's no real excuse for it.

I'm sorry but I couldn't care less what the industry standard for anime is but 50$ for only 13 episodes is a ripoff no matter what way you spin it. I paid 45 bucks for a Lost, Heroes, or The Soprano's box set. That's like 20+ episodes and multiple hours of extras and bonus footage its worth the price. It's not being cheap not wanting to get ripped off.

Totally worth it then. My computers too crappy to download the whole series, and both of my brothers love watching it but hate reading subtitles (one's lazy, the other's only 8 and can't ream them fast enough and nothing is more annoying then taking an hour to watch a half-hour show because you have to keep pausing:awesome)

StrawHat4Life - you do realise that what you paid was not the MSRP, right? The MSRP for Lost and Heroes are $60 USD plus tax, and the MSRP for The Sopranos is $100 USD plus tax.

Remember, the MSRP is not an exact indication of how much the DVDs will retail for from every distributer. It is merely the suggested retail value given by the producer. CaptainAWB proved this with his link to Right Stuf, which will be selling the DVDs for $30. Best Buy will be selling them for $40 and Amazon for $38, just to cite two more examples.

Random Nobody - yes, they will be uncut.

@ Jinjue Yes I'm aware that the MSRP of Lost, Heroes and The Soprano's was more then what they actually retailed for in stores but more often then not DVD's always sell below the MSRP anyway. My point was that I would never call 50$ (if that was the actual retail price) for 13 anime episodes "a steal" at all, ever, especially if they didn't have any major bonus content to speak of.

I'm glad that there are retailers offering more sensible prices as CaptainAWB pointed out.

Have fun spending 50 to 60 bucks on 13 episode dvds then. And i rarely buy any DVDs at all. I just download shit and then delete it so its all cool. I've got other things to spend my money on that i need. Maybe if the DVD box sets were cheaper like 25 bucks with 13 episodes then i'll buy them, but 50 bucks...no thanks. This this why i don't buy anime DVDs because i can't afford them its got nothing to do with being cheap i live on a budget.

OH NOEZZ I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE DOMESTIC ANIME INDUSTRYZZZ I R FAIL!

Thats nice....all i learned is i should spend extra for half a season of episodes for more then its worth be it uncut or released every other month. Its probably better to remain ignorant downloading my episodes in peace then to bother you intelligent anime dub supporters. -_-;

Exactly. Anime can be even cheaper if you look hard enough. I got Naruto boxsets 1-5 for only $25 each, the Bleach Season 1 set for only $35, and all 7 Samurai Champloo DVDs for only $75 (as opposed to the usual $190). Best Buy had a few anime sets on sale this week as well. FYE and Suncoast often have sales as well.

*slams head on table* Yeah, don't forget to use that treasure coupon code. Just got off the phone with them (since I forgot to put it in while busy making my account there). The lady was SUPER nice, and modified my order to the sale price. I also opted for the "Got Anime" club thing. All in all, the grand total (using UPS Ground, Got Anime (+$12, which then shaves 10% ($3) more off the box set), and the sale coupon code) was right at $45.

Well I can understand why some people would think these were a bit pricy.

I usually don't mind paying for short series, but One Piece is going to be at least 600 episodes long.

13 episodes for 30-50 dollars.

Thats around 47 sets of 13 episodes.

$1,410-$2,350

Now usually what happens with big series, you will get big box sets that are cheaper.

By the time they finish coming out on DVDs, DVDs will almost be obsolete.

If you're talking anime becoming an exclusively online thing, I dobut that will happen:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2008-04-04

He brings up several excellent points, and I agree. Now, if you're talking Blu-Ray, you may have a point, but Blu-Ray probably won't have as much of an effect on anime titles as opposed to live-action ones.

Also, that several thousand purchase will take place over the course of several years, so it's not like you're being charged all at once. So I'm not uncomfortable with the thought of spending that much money.

don't really care. unless japanese with english subs is a choice of language on the dvd I ain't buying.

If you actually do prefer the dub over the sub ( not sure why but to each his own), then go for it. if you like the subs better, stick to watching it on youtube/reading the manga or go to veoh or something.

I really don't get dubbed dvds anymore except comedy ones like the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya, which was fucking HILARIOUS. although even then, I can find that same episode on youtube.
