That box is infinitely superior to the 4Kids boxes, but that should go without saying, and I really like the wood-looking background. I also agree with Dr. Hiluruk; Zoro is HUGE! He could practically eat the other three with his bigness.

One thing I wonder about, however, is the run time. 312 minutes? That's only around thirteen episodes and barely qualifies as a boxset, let alone one for an entire season. At that rate, the entire series is going to be taking up a shit ton of shelf-space so I wonder if they'll be releasing larger, and appropriately more expensive, volumes later on? I'd hate to have to double dip just to get the more economical versions, like I ended up doing with the Lupin III films.

Zoro is my biggest (no pun intended) problem with this. The rest look so generic for their characters. I don't like this. Never the less, I will get it.

Hahahahaha, I didn't notice that before but now that I'm looking at it again I can totally see it. :laugh

If the runtime listed at Amazon is any indication, this is true. As I've already noted, at only 312 minutes that would be around thirteen episodes. Sanji doesn't appear until episode 19/20.

13 episodes is very good. Most series only have 3-4 eps for the same price.

Yeah I bought my FM for about 30-40 dollars each with only 4 eps on them....yeah I'm an idiot, but my collection does look impressive.

Trust me, I do know a fair bit about anime boxsets; lord knows I've been buying them long enough. I'm not complaining about the price either because compared to what we used to have to pay for anime "back in the day" – which was usually around $40 USD for one or two episodes/one feature, a single language track and no special features – a $50 USD MSRP for thirteen episodes on DVD is a feckin' steal on every conceivable level.

However, a two disc set of thirteen 24 minute episodes is not a boxset, as far as I'm concerned. Most of my anime boxsets, including the older ones, are considerably longer and contain many more episodes. For season long or half-season series, the boxsets often contain the entire thing. I know that like ADV and Media Blasters, among others, Funimation is capable of releasing slimpacked boxsets that take up less space and have a longer overall runtime, as they've done with their Lupin III movie boxsets. So I'm just wondering if they'll ever plan on doing the same for One Piece because I would really rather not double dip for it to save on shelf space in the future, like I've done with the aforementioned Lupin III movie boxsets.

EDIT:

13 episodes is very good. Most series only have 3-4 eps for the same price.
Actually, singles for most series from most companies retailed at around $25-$30 USD for three to four episodes, but those were singles. Boxsets were significantly higher priced, often in excess of $100 USD or more, but at least those were legitimate boxsets. Slimpacked sets tend to be cheaper on the average as well; as I've mentioned in another thread, the X television series boxset that I picked up as it was coming out totalled at around $220 USD for me; I've seen the full series slimpack retail for nearly a third of that cost.

It's not a box set; it's a DVD.
My thoughts exactly. At best, this "boxset" can be called a volume just because it's not quite a single.

Yeah I know I've bought many things as they come out only to see a smaller sexier box set come out often with extra features. I can't count how many times I've looked at the Desert Punk (Sunabozu) and Samurai 7 full sets and cried a little on the inside.

jinjue, why do you think this is for a boxset? I'm under the impression its a only a dvd.
Whereas I was under the impression that it was going to be released in a series of season-long boxsets. That's what I've been hearing and that's what I've actually been told. For a series as long as One Piece, I'd imagine that longer boxsets, preferably of the slimpacked variety, would be something of a necessity as well. To me, the shelf space an actual boxset would save would more than make up for the higher cost. So if Funimation ever does plan on releasing genuine boxsets instead of singles or volumes, I'd rather know that now so that I won't waste my time/money on double dipping like I've done so many times in the past.

I feel your pain. There have literally been times when I've been told that shiny new boxsets won't get released so I pick up the singles/volumes, only to see the shiny new boxset come out right after I've already spent $200 USD or more on the series in question.

Seriously though, if you think that's bad just imagine how much more it would hurt to spend insane amounts of money on media imported from Japan, only to see it come out on DVD for a fraction of the cost in the States. It...it really hurts, sometimes. :cry

Well, I intend to handle One Piece like how I handled my Naruto DVDs: simply toss the boxes (yes, blasphemy, I know) and keep all the DVDs in a large CD/DVD binder. Which admittedly looks cool with Naruto since all the DVDs have a character on them so it looks quite colorful, and I hope the One Piece DVDs have a similar design. But don't worry, I'll keep the Naruto and One Piece movies on my DVD shelf, so my fandom will be visible. :)

But yeah, DBZ (and we had to wait HOW long for those?) and Inuyasha aside, what long-running series have gotten DVD sets with 25+ episodes each? I know 26/52 episode animes usually get such treatment, but I've never heard of the longer series getting such a break. There probably are, I'm simply unaware of such releases.

I waited and sure enough fma box sets are $30-40 with 13 episodes included in each box and they look pretty nice.

I'll be buying this for sure I like funimations box sets hope for the later episodes they release bluray versions.

I thought about doing that, but I'm too much of a collector to ever forgive myself if I did. Plus, I'd need a lot of binders. A lot. So I keep everything on bookshelves. Either way, space is something of a concern for me.

But yeah, DBZ (and we had to wait HOW long for those?) and Inuyasha aside, what long-running series have gotten DVD sets with 25+ episodes each?
Unfortunately, I really cannot think of any of note other than the City Hunter perfect collections or the Gensoumaden Saiyuki slimpacks from ADV. Not even Marmalade Boy had sets that long, if I recall. But I just don't understand that; if I can get all of Mahou Kishi Rayearth in two ultra-slim sets, or all of Azumanga Daioh or both the Mahou Tsukai Tai OAVs and television show in a single box, ect., ect., why can't we get full or half-seasons of longer running series as well? To go back to the Lupin III movie boxes, all ten of Funimation's Lupin III films in a double slimpack take up less than half the amount of space that the singles did. The same goes for the ADV releases for the classic Dirty Pair movies and OAVs, among many other modern releases. Would it really be so hard to get a full or half-season's worth of longer running series in a single set as well?

Don't get me wrong, I have planned on buying this on DVD ever since Funimation announced that they finally got the license. But I'd hate to have to double dip on it if they plan on releasing more space efficient boxsets in the future, which is likely what I'd end up doing as it wouldn't be the first time.

Its going to have Dual Audio right?
If the eighth movie DVD is any indication, yes.

why the shit is it werth that big a deal that you gotta make a post [...] this long? :oh
Because I can be overly loquacious, as should be obvious by now. Also because I never understood why a shorter series can easily get released in a full 26 episode boxset while a significantly longer series must get released in little volumes of half that rate or less. To be honest, if it was merely an issue of dubbing and production I'd rather wait the extra few months to pick up a larger boxset – at greater cost, appropriately – instead of getting the smaller singles/volumes sooner. But perhaps that is just me.
