got it, watched it.

dub wise it was absolutely brilliant. the only voice i EVER questioned was kohza's. vivi's and bon-clays were flawless. oh lordy. great great great AWESOME job on funi's part. oh lordeh mclord.

BEST QUOTE: after chopper falls on zoro; "errg, ugh, get the hell offa me!"

actual movie wise it definetly wasn't the best movie, but i dunno if you people don't give it enough credit. at least it's not movie #3. thank god.

ANYWHO, discuss the awesome job funi's doing on the dub, specifically the movie here.

i bought the movie today. i thought the movie was good. it's nice that they kept the original audio on it because i kept rewatching the gg storm in both japanese and english to compare and they both blew me away.

I already wrote a long ass review for the dub here (http://forums.narutofan.com/showthread.php?p=13858252#post13858252) in the other movie eight thread. For those who prefer copy-pasting...

I watched the English dub of this film Saturday afternoon and the cinema was totally dead. There were a total of four people who watched it, including myself and an uninterested looking mother who was probably dragged there by her kid. So as far as a cinema going experience goes, it wasn't nearly as good for me as it was for AlienMeg.

I'm not going to bother critiquing the film itself with any kind of depth because anyone who wants to see the original Japanese version of the film can do so already. For those of you who haven't seen it yet I will say this much: it was just a re-cap of the Alabasta arc, all new animation was used for the whole film, a lot of stuff was cut out so that they could cram only the most basic essentials into under ninety minutes, and overall it ranks as one of the lower One Piece films for me because it really wasn't that good.

With that said, I do think that Funimation did a good job with this film. The Strawhats' voice actors are really settling into their roles well, though I do think that Brina Palencia as Chopper is just a tad too high pitched. He sounds too much like a little girl to me, not a young boy. Vivi's voice was great and I think that Caitlin Glass did a phenomenal job; she easily delivered one of the best performances in the entire film, in my opinion. I cannot wait to hear her dubbing over the full Alabasta arc from the anime. Todd Haberhorn as Khoza was alright, not nearly as good as Caitlin, but good enough, and I honestly preferred Kevin Connolly as Pell over his original seiyuu. John Swasey as Crocodile was good as well; he really excelled at sounding condescending and delivering his attack lines. For the most part the voices were all very good, so kudos to the English voice actors.

The only voice I didn't care for was Mr. 2 Bon Clay's. I think it would have been better if Barry Yandell dropped the faux English accent and just stuck with an exaggerated tone and cadence for his voice instead. It wasn't terrible, but I personally didn't care for it and thought that it could have been handled a lot better.

Eric Vale's script was very good, in my opinion. The dialogue sounded natural and it wasn't toned down for television like the current episodes are, so I think it was a good indication of what the uncut episodes may sound like. They even translated "okama" into "cross-dresser" instead of the more benign "ballerina". There are a few things that I didn't care for, but. First of all, I don't understand why they decided to pull an R-L switch with Vivi's surname, Nefertari. The few times I heard it said on screen it sounded like Nefeltari, not Nefertari, and that makes no sense to me given that the original name with the R was clearly done on purpose for a reason. Second, I also thought that Pell's manner of speech was a little too informal; Pell in the Japanese has a very formal, polite way of speaking and I always saw that as an aspect of his regal character, but in the English version he's a lot more casual.

I don't know if this was a script thing or a performance thing, but Miss Father's Day also lost her distinctive laugh, as did Jaguar D. Saul. Instead, Miss Father's Day had a typical "oh-ho-ho-ho-ho!" laugh interspersed with a few ribbits and Saul's "dereshishishi" laugh was cut out entirely. Also, in case anyone was wondering, they did keep Kawashima Ai's rendition of "Compass" instead of dubbing it over in English.

Overall the Funimation dub was very good and in and of itself worthwhile, as was taking the time to see the film on the big screen. It was just too bad that they picked movie eight. I understand the logic behind that choice, but it really isn't one of the better One Piece films. Movie four would have been a much better choice, in my opinion, for a variety of reasons.

Picked this up on Tuesday from Best Buy. I think they did a pretty good job on this movie. I was hoping for some special features on the dvd, but overall I enjoyed it. After watching this, I'm even more eager for those uncut box sets coming in May.

I picked the film up at Best Buy last week and finally got around to watching it this weekend. All in all I must say that the DVD is something of a disappointment, big time. Not because of the film itself or the English dub – the former being ass and the latter being awesome, as I've already mentioned – but because the DVD is bare enough to be considered almost skeletal in terms of actual content. There were no special features for the film at all, not even the original theatrical trailers or a creditless ending, and the trailers that were included were the standard "you have purchased an anime DVD; please buy some more stuff from us now" sort. The One Piece trailer included in that pack wasn't even a trailer; it was just a silent black screen with the gold title logo and a printed notice that the box sets will be out in may. Pfft. If that's a "trailer", than so is my arse, says I.

Some of the subtitles were difficult to follow, particularly when multiple people were talking at once as they would all just get stacked one on top of the other, leaving you to figure out for yourself which subtitle belongs to which character. As such, reading them out of order is pretty easy to do. It's not any kind of major issue at all, mind, but just something that I noticed. The title card wasn't edited or changed at all, however, but it wasn't translated either. Does this mean that the unedited box sets may keep the original blue title logo with Luffy as the 'I' instead of the new – and completely unnecessary, in my opinion – gold logo? I hope so. :amuse

There were some good things about this DVD, though, don't get me wrong. The English language track roxorz my soxorz and the audio/video transfer was great. Merely being able to see unedited, as it was intended, commercial DVD quality One Piece legally on an R1 NTSC domestic release was a joy, and I can't wait to see the same thing for the television series when the box sets finally come out. But other than that there really wasn't much to this DVD, like, at all. Considering that this thing's MSRP is $29.99 plus tax, US, I must admit that the DVD really isn't even worth buying in this day and age, not at that price. Even at the 50% sale price I purchased my copy for, it's pretty bare bones for the cost.

Here's to hoping that the later releases of the box sets won't be so skeletal in content. I'd still buy them even if they were, but at the very least I'd like some creditless opening/ending sequences or something. I'm not expecting Criterion level content and quality here, but with that kind of MSRP I would expect something other than just the film/show and a handful of other product trailers.

but i dunno if you people don't give it enough credit. at least it's not movie #3.
I agree that it wasn't as bad as movie three, but that's not really saying much. Compared to all of the other films, this one still ranks in the bottom half for me. As I've already mentioned, I personally think that the best film to release first would have been movie four. Not only does movie four actually feel like a real movie, as opposed to a really long television episode, but it's also very accessible in a way that even a non-fan may enjoy. It's also one of the better animated films, in my opinion.
