** Hoshigaki Kisame is a character in Kishimoto Masashi`s “Naruto”. All official data and his design, abilities and so on are property of Kishimoto Masashi. Kisame’s official background has yet to be introduced to the readers but until then I will add my own version of it.

Kisame is the only son of the famous Hoshigaki-family, one of the few tribes that originate from the country that later would be known as the Water Country. Long before the Hidden Village of Mist was established, the Hoshigaki-family followed a long tradition of fighting and protecting the island that they were living on. When the first Mizukage founded the Village, all Hoshigakis became strong shinobi loyal to their country but even more loyal to their objectives in obtaining power and proving their superiority in battle.
Before Hoshigaki Kisame took his place as one of the most promising candidates for the spots under Mizukages direct order, his father was fulfilling this duty and served his country. He was known for his superior skill with his sword Samehada, that was inherited from his father – Kisame’s grandfather – and was said to be able to take out ten enemies with one single swing of the blade.

Whether this legend is truth or pure fiction is not known, however it still stands for the reputation of the whole Hoshigaki-family and their supernatural strength and brutal fighting-style.

Kisame wasn’t any different when he was raised by his famous father in the early years, way before he entered the academy to become a shinobi. At the age of 4 his father started to train him with reckless methods and Kisame’s home soon became a drill camp and deep inside his heart he felt a grudge growing against his father but he kept this feelings deep down within him. Kisame first had to learn to force the Samehada into submission for the blade has its own will and obeys only the person that either inherited it or is able to fully control it as if it were a part of the own body. Even though he was a child, Kisame’s father forced the little boy to lift the blade until he didn’t even have anymore power to lift his arms and his hands were pierced by the spikes coming from the hilt of the sword. Furthermore, Kisame had to drag the swords up and down the hills around the village, from sunrise to sunset. The only brakes he had were when he collapsed from exhaustion. During that early period he met other children that were training hard, too, two twins from the near woods with dark blue hair and a red-haired boy who was living and training in a temple outside of the village. Of course the kids didn’t recognize each other but when they later on became teenagers, they would become companions and join the Seven Mist Swordsmen.

The hard training continued and the then the day of entering the academy was drawing closer. Kisame had become strong and was already able to lift the Samehada and theoretically able to draw the sword but of course the blade wouldn’t allow it as long as his father was in control of the sword. Soon Kisame made his name among the academy students and because of his insane strength, brutal fighting skills and appearance many feared the son of the Hoshigaki-family. The teachers of the academy and the Mizukage welcomed such qualities and as expected, Kisame graduated excellently. But before doing so, there was a single incident with one of the younger students, bullying his classmates around. Unfortunately, that child mocked Kisame as well, underestimating the strength of the older academy student and that child names Momochi Zabuza learned a painful lesson which he should never forget and inspired him to become one of the Seven Mist Swordsmen but not before getting his nickname “Kid” from Kisame and later on earning a second one, “Demon of the Mist”, after killing 100 students right before the academy exams started and thus changing the long exam history.

At the same day Kisame graduated from academy, two incidents happened. Immediately after graduating, he was brought to Mizukage (who was accompanied by his personal student, a boy named Tadao Mifune) and was asked to join the new generation of Seven Mist Swordsmen. Kisame didn’t hesitate a second and assigned to the position. Before he was introduced to any details of the new position, he headed homewards. Finally, the day was come. The man who helped making him strong but who he hated so much… it was time to disinherit his father. Of course, Kisame’s father was prepared for that situation since he knew that his son was graduation that day and would definitely be offered the post his father was currently in charge of. Right after Kisame slammed the door of his home open, a fist was connecting with his cheek, sending him through the room.

Kisame reckoned with an attack and despite being hit massively, he came to his senses very quick so that he had enough time to dodge a direct diagonal swing of the Samehada and immediately launch a counter attack which impaled the leading arm that held the big blade with a kunai. Right after that Kisame send his father to the ground with a heavy punch and tried to grab the Samehada. The blade wasn’t obeying and pierced through Kisames hand, struggled under the strong grab of the boy like a wounded animal, ripped flesh and skin from the Hoshigaki boy and did shave deep wounds inside his body. Despite the pain he was feeling, the teenager didn’t let go of the blade as he continued hammering the small skull on the hilt against his father’s head with all his power. Even when his father merely was conscious he continued punching him and he began to enjoy the sound the tortured body of that adult made when the bones where cracking or blood was spraying from opened wounds everywhere over Kisame’s face. The Samehada was still roaring and struggling but Kisame didn’t care about the pain anymore, even if the blade would deny it for a lifetime, Kisame did beat it into submission and was the new master of the sword.

Then, with a last swing, Kisame send the scale-blade of the Samehada across the throat of his father and killing him with that one draw of the sword. Silence was coming down over the house of the Hoshigaki family as the sun was setting and a boy stood over the body of his father, both covered in their own blood and Kisame with a huge sword in his hands that has stopped struggling and accepted its new master that it has to obey until he would fall.

Kisame was now free with his father recently killed and his mother long dead, right after he was born. The only ones that were in his way of getting stronger and obtaining more power were the Seven Mist Swordsmen, Mizukage and his whole country but as long all of those obstacles were providing him with opportunities to fight, he would stay with them till the day they didn’t posses enough power to fill the vessel that Hoshigaki Kisame was.

Of course the Hidden Mist and the Seven Mist Swordsmen weren’t enough for Kisame’s thirst for power and fighting and as we know, he was the first to leave them and he tried to assassinate many Daimyos inside his own country before becoming a missing nin and joining Akatsuki.

On a side note, I doubt anyone will recognize a link to the manga “Vagabond”, telling the story of Miyamoto Musashi according to the novel “Miyamoto Musashi”. In one of the early volumes of the manga, the young Musashi (who, by the way, was the most famous Japanes swordsman at his time) is in a similar position to his father like Kisame is. I was inspired by that relationship and decided to make Kisame similar to Musashi, who hated and feared his father because of his strength and fame and because he was drilled by him and vice versa, the father feared Musashi, his own son, because he soon would grow up, become strong and take his place – something that happened to Kisames (nameless) father, who, in the end was killed and replaced by his own son in a short but brutal battle that, would it ever be drawn in the manga or animated in the anime, would certainly make an extremely cool scene.
