Whether he really cared about the parallels that such a choice would cause to arise or if they were just one of a number of casual side effects brought about by character design, however, I have no clue.

Well, Naruto just doesn´t look like the stereotype japanese with dark hair and dark eyes -like Sai or Sasuke) and that was about it.
Relating to his blond hairs and blue eyes you could say he looks like the stereotype norwegian, german or -most of all- swede. America would not come to my mind at first. USA are known as the "melting pot of cultures" and I´ve never heard of american sterotypes in terms of hair-, skin- or eye colors. :wink

It's unfortunately true. Naruto was probably modeled to appeal to the western audiences. But the blond hair and blue eyes, accompanied by the brightest freaking orange coat and a spiky hair do set him apart from everyone else.

Yes, he does, but he's still... Konoha-ian or whatever. Japanese Manga authors just like to have characters' appearances match their personalities. You always have the bright and energetic character with the bright-ass hair and clothing, and blue or green eyes. Then you have the anti-social, cool guys like Sasuke who always just look dark.

Exactly. For instance, Persians are Aryans (Iran and Aryan have the same etymology). The "blonde haired, blue eyed Aryan" is pretty much a fabrication in the sense it is thought of today.

I think Kishimoto would imagine Naruto as American-ish. He kind of fits a certain stereotype over there. But yeah, anime/manga characters are often Europeanesque in design.

Also, in Japan, blonde hair normally means good luck, or something similar to that.

So while Naruto has the coloring and mannerisms of an American, he still has facial features and a body structure of an Asian.
