She seemed like an angel as she was walking the streets alone. It was a cold night and she felt trembling like a candle in the wind. It must’ve been eleven or maybe even twelve midnight, she didn’t quite know because the last time she had looked at her watch, was almost 30-35 minutes ago. She must’ve gotten lost, even though the address was written on a piece of paper that was shaking between her fingers. It wasn’t like winter, but it seemed too cold to be without a coat on. She hated coats. She seemed to have a problem with them. Especially if they were made of fur. But that wasn’t her concern now. Everything had to be resumed to the place she was heading. It was her sister’s Halloween party and she couldn’t miss it. Actually, she didn’t miss it. When all her hopes seemed to fade away, a familiar door stood in front of her.
The windows were lightening because of the candles and it spread a touch of mystery. Many pumpkins were placed along the stairs and in front of door-way like soldiers guarding the house. They were lighted up and it was worm around, with small kind fires that pleased her sight. She loved the calmness that everything spread around the air. Nothing was heard. There was only silence and she wanted nothing to tear it apart. It was so good and warm that she closed her eyes and tried to remember the times when she had spent Halloween with her parents. A long time passed since that ever happened.
She sat down on a soft armchair and all she needed now was some hot chocolate and a calm music to heal her soul. It was the best Halloween ever... so far...
She didn’t question herself where Marian could’ve been. She was all alone in the room and surrounded by darkness, broken many times by small, but soft candle-fire, with lots and lots of Jack-O-Lanterns smiling, grinning, and crying to her like tiny children. A few aromatic candles spread a sense of lavender or cinnamon in the air, she couldn’t tell them apart. She was charmed by the atmosphere and the warmness made her feel protected and safe.
It was raining outside, by the time she had fallen asleep. Her angel-clothes were light and soft and came as a fairy surrounded by man-fire. The smell of pumpkin drowned her into a deep sleep, where monsters disappeared and the clear, ash sky let out a rain of leaves, just like she always wanted to be.
‘Hey’ she heard. ‘Wake up...’
Somebody was caressing her hair softly and she remembered the time her mother used to do that. As the leaf-rain easily disappeared, her eyes opened widely to face a were-wolf. Or, at least, that was what it seemed. She woke up and the sleep withdrew from her eyes. She looked at the creature again. Now, he seemed a man wearing a wolf-mask. A foreign arm was leaning around her waist and she felt uncomfortable with that. But the arm seemed firm and strong. The mask was removed finally. A young man was watching her curiously:
‘Hi!’ he said joyfully, showing her maybe the funniest smile she’d even seen.
She sat up, rubbing her eyes to wipe out every bit of sleep left and she let go of a strong yawn, to which she couldn’t cover except with her palm. Then, she spread her arms to stretch her tired bones and finally, she looked at the young man still confused:
‘You’re not Marian, are you?’ she asked still sleepy.
The man showed her a tender smile:
‘No... No, I’m not... you’re not Marian either...’
‘I’m not?!... Of course I’m not!’ she bumped more decisively. The young man furthered away a bit from her, she could sit on the couch with her feet touching the ground.
‘You slept like a baby’ he said amused.
She looked at him confused:
‘I did? That’s funny. I don’t usually do that... did you watch me sleeping like a baby?’
Her eyes looked at him still dazzled and confused. He smiled again funnily.
‘Yeah. Yeah, I did... every minute of it...’ he answered and got on his feet.
‘Do you happen to know where Marian is?’ he asked as-a-matter-of-factly.
‘No. I was waiting for her here. What time is it?’
‘Three o’clock. It’s Halloween!’ he smiled enthusiastically. ‘Happy Halloween!’
‘Happy Halloween’ she answered sweetly and got up. She watched his clothes. He seemed to have an ash fur collar, white jeans and a gray sweater. His face was painted with a pale gray colour and his face seemed to resemble the one of a wolf’s. Everything about him seemed to be... gray...
He saw her looking at him and said:
‘I’m a wolf. What are you?’
‘I wanted to be an angel. But my dress got ruined’ she murmured sadly.
‘Why?’
‘I fell asleep, remember?’
‘Oh... I forgot...’
Then, they both stood in silence, while she wished her sister would appear quickly. Foreigners seemed to be another of her problems. She didn’t like them. The most she hated at these situations was the fact that everybody searched to get as tight to her as possibly. That is why she didn’t like going to parties, but she was doing that so she wouldn’t disappoint her sister. Marian seemed her total opposite. Whereas Marian was charming and beautiful and social, she was (or, at least, what she thought about herself) boring and ugly and the type of silence that no one wanted around.
Her thoughts were floating into space and the warmness around surrounded her again like pleasant memories of her past. Then, she startled....
‘Here you go...’ he handed her a mug of hot chocolate. ‘I thought you might want one’
‘Thanks...’ she received pleasantly surprised and watched him for a couple of seconds, while he took a seat next to her.
