She seemed like an angel as she was walking the streets alone. It was a cold night and she felt trembling like a candle in the wind. It must’ve been eleven or maybe even twelve midnight, she didn’t quite know because the last time she had looked at her watch, was almost 30-35 minutes ago. She must’ve gotten lost, even though the address was written on a piece of paper that was shaking between her fingers. It wasn’t like winter, but it seemed too cold to be without a coat on. She hated coats. She seemed to have a problem with them. Especially if they were made of fur. But that wasn’t her concern now. Everything had to be resumed to the place she was heading. It was her sister’s Halloween party and she couldn’t miss it. Actually, she didn’t miss it. When all her hopes seemed to fade away, a familiar door stood in front of her.

The windows were lightening because of the candles and it spread a touch of mystery. Many pumpkins were placed along the stairs and in front of door-way like soldiers guarding the house. They were lighted up and it was worm around, with small kind fires that pleased her sight. She loved the calmness that everything spread around the air. Nothing was heard. There was only silence and she wanted nothing to tear it apart. It was so good and warm that she closed her eyes and tried to remember the times when she had spent Halloween with her parents. A long time passed since that ever happened.

She sat down on a soft armchair and all she needed now was some hot chocolate and a calm music to heal her soul. It was the best Halloween ever... so far...

She didn’t question herself where Marian could’ve been. She was all alone in the room and surrounded by darkness, broken many times by small, but soft candle-fire, with lots and lots of Jack-O-Lanterns smiling, grinning, and crying to her like tiny children. A few aromatic candles spread a sense of lavender or cinnamon in the air, she couldn’t tell them apart. She was charmed by the atmosphere and the warmness made her feel protected and safe.

It was raining outside, by the time she had fallen asleep. Her angel-clothes were light and soft and came as a fairy surrounded by man-fire. The smell of pumpkin drowned her into a deep sleep, where monsters disappeared and the clear, ash sky let out a rain of leaves, just like she always wanted to be.

‘Hey’ she heard. ‘Wake up...’
Somebody was caressing her hair softly and she remembered the time her mother used to do that. As the leaf-rain easily disappeared, her eyes opened widely to face a were-wolf. Or, at least, that was what it seemed. She woke up and the sleep withdrew from her eyes. She looked at the creature again. Now, he seemed a man wearing a wolf-mask. A foreign arm was leaning around her waist and she felt uncomfortable with that. But the arm seemed firm and strong. The mask was removed finally. A young man was watching her curiously:
‘Hi!’ he said joyfully, showing her maybe the funniest smile she’d even seen.
She sat up, rubbing her eyes to wipe out every bit of sleep left and she let go of a strong yawn, to which she couldn’t cover except with her palm. Then, she spread her arms to stretch her tired bones and finally, she looked at the young man still confused:
‘You’re not Marian, are you?’ she asked still sleepy.
The man showed her a tender smile:
‘No... No, I’m not... you’re not Marian either...’
‘I’m not?!... Of course I’m not!’ she bumped more decisively. The young man furthered away a bit from her, she could sit on the couch with her feet touching the ground.
‘You slept like a baby’ he said amused.
She looked at him confused:
‘I did? That’s funny. I don’t usually do that... did you watch me sleeping like a baby?’
Her eyes looked at him still dazzled and confused. He smiled again funnily.
‘Yeah. Yeah, I did... every minute of it...’ he answered and got on his feet.
‘Do you happen to know where Marian is?’ he asked as-a-matter-of-factly.
‘No. I was waiting for her here. What time is it?’
‘Three o’clock. It’s Halloween!’ he smiled enthusiastically. ‘Happy Halloween!’
‘Happy Halloween’ she answered sweetly and got up. She watched his clothes. He seemed to have an ash fur collar, white jeans and a gray sweater. His face was painted with a pale gray colour and his face seemed to resemble the one of a wolf’s. Everything about him seemed to be... gray...
He saw her looking at him and said:
‘I’m a wolf. What are you?’
‘I wanted to be an angel. But my dress got ruined’ she murmured sadly.
‘Why?’
‘I fell asleep, remember?’
‘Oh... I forgot...’
Then, they both stood in silence, while she wished her sister would appear quickly. Foreigners seemed to be another of her problems. She didn’t like them. The most she hated at these situations was the fact that everybody searched to get as tight to her as possibly. That is why she didn’t like going to parties, but she was doing that so she wouldn’t disappoint her sister. Marian seemed her total opposite. Whereas Marian was charming and beautiful and social, she was (or, at least, what she thought about herself) boring and ugly and the type of silence that no one wanted around.
Her thoughts were floating into space and the warmness around surrounded her again like pleasant memories of her past. Then, she startled....
‘Here you go...’ he handed her a mug of hot chocolate. ‘I thought you might want one’
‘Thanks...’ she received pleasantly surprised and watched him for a couple of seconds, while he took a seat next to her.

‘So...’ he started relaxed.
‘So...’
‘How do you know Marian?’
‘She’s my sister.’
‘Your sister?!’ he seemed surprised. ‘I didn’t know she had a sister. Actually I don’t know Marian too well. We just met two weeks ago, while I was giving an audition and...’
‘Are you an actor?’ she asked curiously.
He looked at her taken by surprised by her question. Then, he answered smiling in that funny way:
‘Yeah... or, at least I’m trying to be. But you know, they never give any chance to anybody... anyway, Marian helped me around with a few things and we became friends after that. She invited me to stay with her. You know, I’m searching for an apartment of my own. She never told me she had a sister...’
‘No... I suppose not...’ she answered again sadly.
‘That’s a pity. You seem a nice person.’
She blushed and giggled childishly.
‘Thanks... that’s very sweet of you...’
To avoid his look, she drank from her chocolate. It was exactly like in her dream. Warm and aromatic, it made her sleepy again and her lips took the shape of a dreamful smile to which the young man laughed easily:
‘It’s good, isn’t it?’
‘Yes. Yes, it is’ she answered pleased.

The candles seemed to melt by and by and by the time she had finished her next mug of hot chocolate, the entrance door opened and Marian came in, dressed as a witch. She met with the young man and smiled:
‘Hi, Jack. Didn’t expect to see you this soon. Happy Halloween!’
‘Happy Halloween, Mare’ he answered happily.
Marian’s eyes crossed the room and when she saw her sister, she jumped enthusiastically:
‘Oh, my God! Cleo! You’re here!’
She hugged her sister so tight that Cleo had to push her away. She didn’t give much importance to loveliness, especially in the presence of others.
‘Of course I’m here, Marian...’ answered Cleo, red in her cheeks because of the small embarrassment her sister’s hug gave her. Soon, she discovered that they weren’t the only ones in the room. Other people filled once the most pleasant and silent house she had even stayed in. there were all kinds of people dressed as animals or characters from the past history. Some went to the kitchen, some were serving now drinks or started conversations or offered snacks on plates, like some long-time schedule. Everything seemed planned for some time now and Marian didn’t even bother to take care of things.

Cleo searched unwillingly with her looks around, to see if she could recognize some of the guests. The music wasn’t loud and it was quite pleasant, even though it sent around the feeling of mystery and some kind of invisible fog. The house was still warm, but now new candles were burning and the fires seemed even more pleasant and happy, as the atmosphere began to be more relaxed and friendly. The Jack-O-Lanterns were smiling to Cleo like pairs of cheeky children, preparing to say “trick or treat”. She felt comfortable for the first time. She was sitting on the same couch with a new mug of hot chocolate, as she didn’t quite like alcohol. A few of the boys and girls were dancing and one of them stopped to sit next to her:
‘Hi! I’m Steve. You must be Cleo, right?’
She looked at him pleasantly surprised:
‘How did you know?’
‘We met once, don’t you remember? Your sister took you to a movie with some of her friends. Remember?’
‘Oh, yes, indeed, I do.’ She smiled to him kindly, for she knew too well how to lie. Of course she didn’t remember Steve.

She didn’t know why she accepted to dance. Steve was about to annoy her because this must’ve been the tenth time he’d stepped on her foot.
‘Sorry’ he excused himself hesitantly. ‘I really don’t know how to dance.’
‘Why am I not surprised?!’ Cleo thought, rolling her eyes around, trying hard not to squeak any sound from her mouth because of his stupid accidentally hits.
‘You know’ Steve started, ‘you seem a very tense person.’
Cleo looked at him surprised of the question.
‘Really?’ she requested. ‘I didn’t... ouch!... know that... perhaps it’s because I don’t get out so often as you.’
‘You don’t ? Well, you should. You seem a nice person.’
‘So I was told...’ she muttered, thinking of the moment of silence she had an hour ago.

Marian finally succeeded in grabbing the apple by its small tail. It was her favorite game. When she lifted the apple in her teeth, her friends congratulated her funnily:
‘Wait a go, Mare! Great! You’re the best!’
‘Hey, Mare’ said George, a friend of hers, ‘what about the Snap-Dragon?’
‘Cleo can try it.’
Marian looked at her sister intentionally. They all turned to face her too. Cleo watched them confused:
‘What?’ she questioned confused.
‘Let’s play the Snap-Dragon!’ her sister bumped enthusiastically. ‘C’mon, Cleo! Just the two of us. Just like old times!’
There was a moment of silence between them. Then, Cleo got up suddenly and from all the friends that surrounded Marian, she recognized Jack, the young man who woke her up earlier that night. He smiled to her just as she already knew too well: funnily.
‘Just like old times...’ she chanted easily. She nodded and headed for the big pan in which tiny hot currants jumped naughtily.
Marian smiled cheekily:
‘We’ll see who’s best now...’
Cleo returned the cheeky look back:
‘You’re right...’

Somehow, she ended up alone in the room. Marian had gathered most of her friends to enjoy the other games with the mirrors and “true-false” questions.

‘Are you sure you don’t have a sleeplessness problem?’
His voice woke her up so sudden that she startled with a short and deaf moan.
‘Oh...’
‘It’s Jack...’
‘Cleo...’
He smiled again easily:
‘Like I said: do you have a problem with sleeping?’
‘No. Why do you ask?’
‘You fell asleep again.’ Jack sat next to her on the couch. ‘Aren’t you tired? I mean you ate almost all those currants.’
She bustled uncomfortably and yawned again:
‘It’s my first Halloween with Marian. It’s been a long time since we got together.’
‘And in this kind of case, you’re falling asleep!’ he burst into laughter.
She got on her feet indifferent.
‘I’m going home.’ she said.

Marian didn’t let go of her. They stood hugged for some minutes. For the first time, Cleo didn’t want to let go.
‘I love you’ she said.
‘Me too.’

It was raining still and the drops fell like an ideal picture of a Halloween day. It was the 30th of October and Cleo opened her eyes, still dreaming of that hot chocolate and those aromatic candles.

She set fire on some cinnamon sticks and let their perfumed smoke to spread in the room, in hope to recreate the atmosphere of last night.

Her pumpkin-pie was still good to eat and when she warmed it up, it was even better. Her chocolate was waiting for her on the table in front of the TV. She thought she could see a movie on video. Suddenly, the door-bell rang.

‘Oh, hi...’
She couldn’t say anything because she was quite surprised to see him here.
‘Hi... Jack...’

‘I suppose you’re asking yourself what I’m doing here’ Jack said smiled easily.
‘Can’t say that that crossed my mind. But it’s quite surprising... you’re presence here, I mean...’
‘Well, Marian gave me your address....’
‘Would you like a piece of pie? It’s a pumpkin pie...’
‘I, a... guess...’
He seemed to be confused and to have something totally different in mind than eating a piece on pumpkin pie. Cleo didn’t observe his hesitation. She stretched him a plate and sat down next to him.
‘So...’ she started.
‘So...’

She opened her eyes. The taste of his lips still remained on hers so warm and chocolate-like that she didn’t seem surprised to receive a kiss at all. In the end, Jack smiled to her:
‘Could I stay for a little longer?’
‘Why not? It’s Halloween, isn’t it?’
