An arrest warrant has reportedly been issued in Japan for “Heroes” star Hayden Panettiere over her dolphin-saving attempt last month in the country, but the actress appears to have no fear.

In a statement released Thursday afternoon to Access Hollywood, Hayden branded the arrest warrant “defensive.”

“Obviously this issue has generated defensive behavior on the part of both the Japanese Authorities and Fishermen,” she said in the statement. “I have grown up hearing - and adhering to - this phrase: ‘condemnation without investigation dooms one to everlasting ignorance.’

“We must unite as a world to solve our increasing international environmental crises,” her statement continued. “We can no longer hide [behind] out-dated, senseless cultural traditions and lazy, bad habits that are resulting in the annihilation of our planet’s resources and the extinction of our species.”

During a trip to Japan last month, Hayden put her life on the line trying to prevent fisherman from slaughtering a group of dolphins.

Hayden and five others paddled out on surfboards into the ocean on a pre-dawn mission to disrupt the local fishermen’s efforts to catch and kill the dolphins. However, as the group made their way towards the pod of dolphins, who appeared to be caught in the net, Hayden, a spokesperson for SaveTheWhalesAgain.org, and friends were intercepted by one of the small fishing boats.

The fishermen used the boat’s propellers to block the surfers’ way and used a long boathook to try and push them away.

The dramatic and dangerous encounter lasted for several minutes before Hayden and her group was forced to return to shore as the animals were slaughtered.

“They were so pretty. They were teddy bears in the water,” an emotional Hayden explained to Access Hollywood earlier this month. “They slowed down and started gathering in the net towards us. This little baby popped its head out and looked at us and all of us just wanted to cut them out of the nets and set them free.”

“I’d probably be in jail in Japan right now if I did,” she told Access at the time.

The actress learned of the arrest warrant news during an interview Thursday on Australia television program, “The Morning Show.”

“I [have] got some interesting news for Hayden right now,” Dave Rastovich, who was with the star during the protest said live on TV. “It’s just been issued in Japan that we are up for arrest in Japan for doing what we did [recently]. So they have issued arrest warrants saying that the six of us who went into the water during the kill were violating international commerce.”

This is all probably terribly serious to both sides of the issue but I laughed at the baby dolphin comment. Sounds like a Disney film in the making.

A TV star who puts her money where her mouth is. I'm impressed. You just don't see that very often.

All the same, the arrest warrant won't even reach Hayden as long as she stays out of Japan until it's forgotten. On the other hand, the threat against her isn't helping Japan's image, or their fishermen's. It's not enough that they can't find anything else besides dolphins to kill, but that they also bully women with potentially deadly boat maneuvers in order to kill said dolphins, and then try to charge them with something just a step below "terrorism" for it, amounts to taking out your own foot with an assault rifle.

Ya, it is pretty screwed up. Why in the world are they killing Dolphins in the first place? I didn't even know they ate that over there...

I don't get it, either. Is there some special use for dolphins that you can't get out of fish?

I watched a slaughter of dolphis by Japanese vid on youtube some time ago and I couldnt believe they actually eat them. Dolphins are somewhat intelligent creatures and they panic when their loved ones are in danger, they also travel in family groups. Japanese fishermen slaughter them very cruelly. They make sure that the dolphin dies a slow and painful death so that his meat will be tastier or some BS like that. So they cut the pieces of Dolohin's skin and meat out when the dolphin is alive, and they'll tough the vital organs last. So it's like a long, painful torture for a dolphin. Anyways, that vid caused me to become vegetarian.

I think it's not so much the "We dont eat cute animals" as "We dont eat Smart animals".

The more intelligence an animal shows, I guess the less appitizing it appears. With how smart Dolphins actually are, it jsut seams kinda cruel to me. While I have no qualms with eating like Eel or Shark.

And it doesnt; seam they are killign these dolphins for food, so much as to prevent them from eating fish. Just killing the poor creatures for tryign to survive is silly.

I know it's a little crossing the border to say this, but doesn't that mean that humans with less intelligence have less value?

Yes, dolphins are smart and they socialize and play. But it just "appears" less appetizing, and "seems" cruel. There's nothing wrong with feeling that, and in fact it's very right for us to feel queasy about it. Upon examination, however, it is, again, culture.

We seem to enjoy shooting creatures here in the western world.

People who torture animals for amusement give me the chills. :-(

A little trivia while we're on the subject: Most carnivores hunt for food, and aside from humans, the only other creatures on this planet that have been documented to terrorize and kill other creature purely for amusement are dingos, which I don't find a very flattering comparison.

If I recall correctly, Japan has made it illegal to slowly kill a dolphin now. Whether or not people are following the law is dependent on the individual and their habits, not the government, the nation, or the culture.

Continuing another point: I'm pretty sure some followers of Hinduism in India are grossed out and angry about our cow-killing here, for example.

She seems to think she can regenerate in real life
